Player Watch #7: Zane Duursma - out for 2024, undergoing shoulder surgery

I like Watson.... But over 50 scoring shots is an interesting way to put it.

Another 50 in his stats column - he only went at 50% for those scoring shots.

He looked rushed early on, but settled down as the season went on. He'll be fine.

5 goals 18 from his first 9 games.
20 goals 9 from the last 9.

Can't really gauge where he's at especially when we were the youngest team in the comp every week.

Need to see how he goes now that we've added in some much needed leadership. I am very confident 2025 will be a good year for him.
We didn't do him any favours, we threw him as the 2nd key forward as a 19 year old for a taste of AFL action.
At least next year he'll be the 3rd or 4th tall alongside Larkey, Darling and Zurhaar at stages.
I wouldn't want to be matched up on him or Curtis if we get the ball in there more this year.

This was what I was alluding to in my original post. Totally agree.

The ball use wasn't much chop either. CD is impressing as much as if not more than the other guys we recruited in Parker and Darling.

Midfield needs to lift just as much as we've strengthened either side of the ground.

Whats interesting about this kid is he has a lot of great tools at his disposal and finds lots of ways to get on the end of goals. He performed pretty well for a first year player but he’ll need some time to settle, and become confident at senior level before we see all the various aspects to his game.

Some of those who are unsure about Duursma , I encourage you to go back and watch some of his great marks and goals in his first AFL season as an example of what he can do. Wait until he fills out a bit and gets a little bit more experience and he will be doing more of this on a regular basis. Plus he has the confidence to pull it off. He will be a match winner you watch. The kid is class and can play
As "the Rock" would say, dam straight "jabroni"! There's a few things in life I'm not worried about and Zane just happens to be one of those things, he's not alone though, he's got a few team mates who are in the same boat. Now is it wishful thinking or is it watching a young footballer/footballers with so much ability that sometimes people mistake him/them for "not trying", up themselves/over confident or not doing enough in their first year, should have done more!

Is that a fact?
Well if that's peoples reality then nothing and I mean nothing is ever going to change their minds, so why bother? Now some might say in their defence, "well that's not true, I want him to succeed and IF he goes to another level next year or I'm prepared to give him next year and see how he goes, if he doesn't do something then he's a bust".

Now there's that word that I have trouble with, IF, why should there be a IF, here's a little hint, 99% of the time clubs are usually pretty happy with what they see from top rated juniors when they first come into an AFL club and its training standards and pretty much everything else is a huge step up from playing against your own age, at first the youngsters will have a modified program so as not to over burden the youngster/s in their first year which makes sense.

I'm pretty sure the club is pretty happy with Zane's first year, I thought he did more than what he should have considering his frame, fitness levels and some of the things he did, well a wondering nomad could tell you "hell, he's classy that boy, get some pre seasons into him and your going to have a special player there". 🤨

The impatience around this joint is mind boggling.

Repeat after me - not everyone is going to be like sheezel

Guys like Sheez, Daicos, Ashcroft etc. have really changed expectations on the impact a first year player is supposed to have I feel.

Right? Most players wont have much of impact till least their 3rd year. Let the kid be, if his going to get good, it's not going to be because keyboard warriors bashing his performance over bigfooty. Maybe after that 3 years is up and his shown little signs of improvement, then you can take it out on him.

Let’s just hope his very good is with us and not * as his old man is purported to be telling anyone who will listen

His old man can't be too bright if he is angling to get Zane at the same club as Xavier. Similar to what happened with the Roccas and the Clokes before that, the younger brother will push the older brother out of the team.

Is there really any doubt on the kids talent itself though?

His worst case is still a decent mercurial forward.
Nope he's supremely talented and other teams like Dees, Hawks and Bombers were desperate to get him.
Just a reminder his national champs final - 22 disp, 10 marks, 15 score involvements, 6 score assists and kicked 4.2.
If he gets anywhere close to that at AFL level and can expand into the middle long term, woah boy.

They play different roles. Talking hypothetical situations, there's plenty of room for them both there
