I'd imagine they opened when business hours opened. The decks had their own express lift, so it wouldn't be crowded with suits, just tourists. I went up them in 1994, family went to visit our Irish-American rellos after I did me VCE. There's a small army of Sickos over there

If I remember correctly the observation deck didn't open until something like 10am, there was no one up there yet.

Half chilean here... Something you might find kool is that the Chilean Govt. has a 'White House' Every bit as big and grand as the USA version. It's called the "palacio de moneda"

Anyway the amazing thing is on sept 11 they actually ****ing bombed it with airplanes while the president was inside. The greatest contreversy to this day in Chile is wether the president died in the air strikes while on duty, or killed himself in shame. No one really knows.

Another little fact i heard on 3AW, the architect of the buildings was in Japan or something at the time of the attack. He was trying desperately to contact NYC, to tell them the second building would collapse first, as it was struck lower by the plane.

Does anyone know if it was common knowledge that the buildings would collapse? Both in a general sense and by the people inside?

Well that's a can of worms that one, many dispute the reasons why the buildings collapsed. Some say the buildings were specifically designed to withstand this kind of attack, the jet fuel burning wouldn't have been hot enough to melt the pillars, the list goes on. And what did happen to building 7 anyway?

From their point of view, they missed a massive opportunity for more chaos by smacking the towers before the observation deck opened. Imagine the terror if the observation deck was full. That would be nuts.

I think the first instinct would be to GTFO of the building. But then you are dealing with falling debris- including bodies falling from the sky. Man, just a shocking decision to make all round.

Surely engineers or whoever may have known they were going to collapse.

Did anyone watch the shows they had on the history chanel last night on foxtel? It was about 3 hours worth of 9/11 stuff.

As it has been mentioned throughout this thread, 9/11 was an absolute horric day but what scares me more is how well it was planned. every single detail you could possibly think of was covered off. They had rehersed the flight paths, seating arrangments, everything.

The other thing that stood out to me was what appeared to be a large amount of times these groups could of been stopped due to information that was obtained by FBI but was never passed on to the powers that be till AFTER the events.

Bush even received new attack alert notices but felt that nothing new had come to light so didnt act on it.

Airport secuirty person had a bad feeling about one of them, stopped him for questioning and still didnt feel right about it, but then let him go through against his better judgement..

Im not at all saying it was a inside job, but it was pretty alarming how many times they got so close to being able to capture or stop them but something always stopped them.

I know there are certain head scratchers in the American behaviour in the lead up to the event, but I think that a lot of the reason for that was the disfunction within the security service. This was the new World Order don't forget and America was sitting proudly and supposedly untouchable at the top of that. The tin foil brigade can pound their keyboards for the rest of eternity but for mine, the warnings were missed as a result of a combination of hubris and the politics of American security.
