I'm harping on now, but can somebody explain to me what exactly is good about Gravity? It was pretty, that's about it. Nothing else stood out to me at all.

Nothing ever stands out in Sandra Bullock films. Except maybe how cheesy they are.

Spot on. It just wasn't believable that this person made it through the program to become an Astronaut.

THE worst Astronaut in a movie ever.
Except she wasn't playing an Astronaut, she was a Medical engineer with no experience being in space, which is why she made a lot of mistakes

So a medical engineer is working on the Hubble after 6 months training(given astrounauts take upwards of two years to be fully trained) and can also pilot space craft...

Cheesy to the extreme.

Shall we discuss the Golden Globes here?

Red Carpet about to get underway. It's going ahead after a cameraman set up a light too close to a smoke detector and flooded the whole Red Carpet. They've frantically dried it in time.

GGs will tell us a lot, as they always do. They love to award the big stars, but a GG win really pushs films and names forward.

Can't find a good stream

Usually I'm really eager about particular nominations becoming a reality, but so many of my favourites were nominated this year that I'm too high to care lol. I'm spoilt this year. As long as Best Picture doesn't nominate something like The Butler or Saving Mrs Banks, I'm cool.

Does anyone else here frequent Awards Daily? (the one with that awfully biased feminist Sasha Stone). I've been a regular there since the 2004 Oscar race, it's a great year-long Oscar race site, and usually pretty spot-on. Over the last decade it's been one of my several routine web sites to check, at least on a weekly basis.

For me, nominations are Christmas and the awards are mostly going through the motions. So midnight tonight will be exciting for me.

I steer well clear of Awards Daily personally Roobs. She offers up some decent articles but she's also a bit of a loon. It's no surprise that her own forums separated themselves from her.

Oh she is. She is a vivid example of the wrong type of feminist, and it just clouds her ability to treat films with any sense of objectivity. She wasn't always this afflicted by tunnel vision, but it has got worse over the last 2-3 years. In the trans world, I have encountered a lot of Sasha types, they are always insufferable. Some people will never be happy. She made a terrible tantrum-like post 3 years ago concerning the Oscars, and has never consistently recovered.

But I don't go there for her opinions really. It's Oscar coverage over the years though has been second to none.

Yeah I do remember her not being so bad a few years back.

There are that many Oscar sites out there now, and a heap with just as good coverage, that I have no need to ever go to Awards Daily any more.

For me, I found there were lots of good Oscar sites in the mid 2000s, but a lot of them seemed to go under around then, except Awards Daily. I haven't looked elsewhere that much since then, but I'll check them out if the situation has improved.

The forums (AwardsWatch) are going that way too, or the 'predictions' section at least. It's sad really, there used to be some really interesting posts but its now descended into gifs, circle-jerking and fanboys.

Well let's be honest, the whole thing can get pretty boring, so I don't begrudge them playing around. I'm not an active poster so the constant nonsense being posted doesn't bother me. When it gets down to serious predictions, the majority of forum regulars know their stuff.

True, it's just annoying combing through countless threads to find an interesting stat/post etc. I still frequent it regularly and it's still the best prediction forum, but 6 threads of over 25 pages for Best Actress predictions in November is a little extreme.

The Actress stuff is just ridiculous on there, I stay well away from it.

I watched this live last night during the Kyrgios match. The snub that stood out most to me;

1. Stories We Tell

Also disliked that Llewyn was mostly snubbed, but I did predict it. But the best thing about it was the Delbonnel cinematography, and that got a nom, so happy with that. On the other hand, The Butler missed out big time, but I was predicting it and happy with it too.

The amount of AH noms is disturbing. Concerned that it might still be a big threat. On the other hand, the lack of big noms for Her, outside BP, means we can finally rule it out as a dark horse (coupled with its middling BO).

August and DBC would be rapt with the noms they got.

BP - Wolf is meant to give them some edgy cred, but it just masks other choices like Philomena and especially DBC. Rather beige.

Felt sorry for Redford, it's a shame a Bale got in and he didn't. But others missed out as well. It's also a shame Emma Thompson missed out on Best Actress, and disappointed Brie Larson missed out as well.

Some stats I noticed;

A Russell film in 2 consecutive years has scored acting noms in all 4 Oscar categories. All Oscar dreamers should screen test for his next film

Fassbender and Sally Hawkins finally received Oscar nominations. On the flip side, Bradley Cooper and Jonah Hill will be rapt to be 2 time Oscar nominees.

Amy Adams 5th acting nomination before 40
Cate Blanchett's 6th acting nomination before 45
Meryl's 18th acting nomination before 65

I'm surprised Oprah was snubbed as she was pretty good in what was an average film at best. I thought Emma Thompson's performance was terrific too, but apparently not the Academy.. I'm happy Hanks didn't get nominated as I didn't think Captain Phillip's was all that good, and his Walt Disney wasn't noteworthy.

You have to admire Meryl Streep - one of the best actors of this era

My thoughts:

- American Hustle moves into BP favouritism. An equal best 10 nominations, including all the major categories. Would be very low down in my personal list of Oscar winners though. Gravity and 12 Years still in it.

- Dallas Buyers Club was far more loved than anyone thought. With it's surprise Editing nomination, a key indicator, it appears DBC would have made the cut in a 5 Best pic year. McConaughey now favourite too.

- Biggest snubs were Stories We Tell and Tom Hanks. Emma Thompson also big, but it was becoming increasingly likely Adams would get in at the expense of one of the older ladies. Redford was always 50/50, just wouldn't have had enough #1 votes. Hanks is huge; didn't see one person who didn't have him in their predictions. Also a terrific performance, #3 of the leading men this year IMO..

- Jonah Hill is not only a two-time Oscar nominee, but he's done it at the age of 30. You'll often see comedic actors shining in dramatic roles later in their careers, but not like this. Personally, I thought it was a below average performance, but I do like to see AMPAS nominate "different" performances, be that comedic or just slightly stranger roles.

- It's a shame Redford or Hanks was cut at the expense, but I was very glad to see Bale in. I thought he was best in show and thoroughly deserved it. In these sprawling (messy) films with a lot going on and all kinds of bit characters popping up, the lead performance can often be ignored. Good to see he wasn't.

- Black and white cinematography is a sure-fire way to get an Oscar nom. Granted I haven't seen Nebraska, but I frequent a few cinematography-themed sites and have barely seen it's photography mentioned at all. 12 Years A Slave on the other hand, had universally loved photography. Eh, Lubezki is going to win anyway...surely?

- Sally Hawkins is my favourite nomination of the bunch. A huge snub back in 2008 (statistics wise, I was one of the many that wasn't huge on the performance), so it's great to see her become a nominee.

Will do my first winners picks later.
