Retired #9: Brendon Goddard - Retires a winner - Thanks for everything BJ

You'd think of the 73 turnovers we had 20 of them were Goddards fault with the way people are talking.

I think what he said during the week is exactly what the younger players should be thinking. They should also do it. It's also the first idea we have of where Goddard thinks he's at. He doesn't say that if he still thinks he has a few years left.

I reckon he's going to retire, telling the young blokes "there's a spot there for the taking so grab on to it" is what I want our leadership to be telling our younger players.

I thought he was pretty good in some elements of the game. His 1v1 work he got a couple of good spoils in and not just spoils but directed it to team mates that set up our attack.

I think we were just down overall by foot and hand. Dea, Walla, Goddard all butchered the ball. Even Zach turned it over a bit early.

He will bounce back.

He can end it on his terms, he's earnt that.

I thought his ground ball work an improvement this week, which has been the biggest criticism against him of late, and he had a ridiculous amount of intercepts, but he did make other mistakes and those two times getting caught after bouncing were awful and stick out like dogs balls. I'm not saying he was good, but overall what he did the good outweighed the bad. I agree he can probably bounce back, but a rest would do him good.

As much as I love what Brendon can do, would love it if he could make a decision for the betterment of the club and not himself.
That is very harsh.

- He represented the club through the shit show he walked in on.
- Captained the club.
- Finished top 5 in our B&F every year over his 5 seasons with us (and won one).

Goddard's 6 years at Essendon have clearly been more for the "betterment" of the club over himself.

You can critique his form, playing ability or leadership but I can't see how you can critique his service to the club.

I have criticised Goddard for a variety of things over his time at Essendon. His leadership style, the sometimes unwillingness to put his body on the line like some do, etc..

but even with that said, he is clearly underappreciated among a portion of our supporter base. It seems his occasional bad games undo a large run of good games, or that one poor kick into the corridor undoes 10 great decisions and kicks.

If we got Goddards consistent level of output from a young player like Redman, Ridley or Francis, I suspect we would be pinning over them.

He has been a GREAT club man in the face of great adversity that deserves more respect than he gets from some.

thought he might have got run up forward when Smack went down yesterday. We were extremely small at that point....Orazio, Colyer, Bagley, Walla all tiny and Raz the only one who can mark overhead.

He wants to be knocked of his perch by the younger players. The way things are headed he will fall off his perch first. He looked old and slow last night at times. Didn't really embrace every contest and thats a bad look. But he does deserve another year.

He has lost a yard of speed, he has also lost his split second decisiveness.

Thus spelling the decline is on and the end is nigh.

This year or next, id go out on a high, but brendon seems one to scrap until he is told he has nothing to scrap for.

My post was in reference to Mundy being a lot less selfless and giving the opportunity for other players to take his midfield minutes. Goddard has too much self pride. I can't see him doing what Mundy is doing for Fremantle.

Disagree. Goddard has been thrown all over the field for the betterment of the team and never complained. The problem his best spot next year might be in the magoos .

In the votes again, potentially with votes from both coaches. Almost as if the average Joe watching on TV doesn't see everything and is influenced by the odd howler and the awful commentators that target him week in week out.

ESSENDON v FREMANTLE
10 Orazio Fantasia (ESS)
8 Devon Smith (ESS)
3 David Zaharakis (ESS)
3 Tom Bellchambers (ESS)
3 Brendon Goddard (ESS)
3 Dyson Heppell (ESS)
