North already inside Shiel's headWas listening to a bloke who worked at Hawthorn under Clarkson, they used to teach this to the new draftees - if you hit a person hard enough, it cant not weigh on their mind, cause it worries them, its natural instinct, it drives fear into the back of their brain. From that moment on they start looking for you, it might be conscious, it might be subconscious but once their attention, or a % of their attention is on you and not totally on themselves, or their own game...their own ability has become diminished. You have won a little battle in the bigger war.
It would seem to me, in this respect, Parker entered rent free into many Essendon minds without even needing to lay a hit. Its probably a microcosm of the great issue. No one hits hard, nobody is scared to play Essendon, in fact id put money on WCE and Norf marking our game on the calendar as their big effort game - the gettable ones.
Couldn't trade half of them, obviously some would have to be delistings. If we were serious about that then we'd be trading half the list.
That's true. But most are still under contract so it'd have to be a tradeCouldn't trade half of them, obviously some would have to be delistings.
You need to trade one and Shiel is that player. If the penny doesn’t drop, you trade another one. Give it time, you have either got all the deadweight out, or the players have decided to do the team thing. If we were serious about that then we'd be trading half the list.

His performances aren't meeting his contract, rip it up and refuse to pay him, say he's no longer on our list. Let him go challenge it in court if he wants, he'll be completely humiliated and his career will be over either way.

You're more focused on Shiel and how he handles it. He hasn't said anything about Parker or commented on the situation. Resilience is obviously a good trait so I don't believe something like that would impact him in isolation.
How well he handles mockery or scrutiny shouldn't be taken into consideration when you call someone out. Even if he laughs it off, my position wouldn't change.
Option 3 as long as he is happy/committed and not just turning up for the pay cheque. If his head isn't in it maybe a fresh start is best for both parties. Hoping it's just a funk but something doesn't seem right. Don't know enough to know. For me there are 3 options for Shiel.
Option 1- is free to a good home' basket. If his manager can get to work behind the scenes and find a home, then we'll take the list spot and capspace. Token future 4th. This is the best option for us. Clean cut, provided Shiel asks to leave.
Option 2- we pay half his salary in return for a 2nd round pick. Would definitely consider this provided Shiel asked to leave.
Option 3- Shiel doesn't ask for a trade. We see out the final years of his contract and use him best we can/hope he can turn things around. This isnt horrible either as our cap is fine and has space with him in it. We can also open up list spots easy enough end of season.
Thankfully we are not forced into a Brodie situation where GC gave a good pick away to get rid of him, because we dont have the cap/list spot issues that GC have/had.

There is a player behind Parker who I believe was Cutler ? , piss poor but doesn't surprise me.Re: the Parker taunt, because the camera is zoomed in it's hard to tell if any of the Bombers actually saw it but it does look like some/most have their backs turned? That could explain why there was no response.
I hear a lot about Lloyd being the foundation stone of all cultural problems.Lloyd is right but he is a hypocrite as this shit started under his watch as captain. It was his me , what about me as captain that has lead us here. Now he sits back and takes pot shots. What he says is correct but did anyone do it under his leadership ? All he did was throw young blokes under the bus.
I hear a lot about Lloyd being the foundation stone of all cultural problems.
Interested to know more about that era as I always find Lloyd a clear thinker who understands footy.
I will also say that two years of poor captaincy shouldn't have been too hard to correct culturally.
I remember him being unhappy about being moved to the Richo wing role. Not sure on refused.did he not refuse to play a reduced role forward to usher in the next gen so he packed up and left in a huff?
I've been advocating this for a while, he can use his run on the outside and has fitness to run both ways.Keep him away from the centre square.
Make him a wingman like Rory Sloane so he can use his pace
If he can't be accountable then you drop him properly
He's a burst player, fast off the mark but afaik not so blisteringly quick over 10-15 metres. Would need to get out of the pack and dispose of it before he gets mown down, with disposal most likely by hand, which requires an overlap runner to kick inside 50 to a set shot. He's a factory standard second touch mid and would be an important player in a team that suited him.I've been advocating this for a while, he can use his run on the outside and has fitness to run both ways.
It would suit his style of play and would benefit the team ?
I don't thinking it's working for him at the moment in the centre square, his defensive pressure isn't up to the standard required (I know he's not the lone ranger). Also allows for Cox to play a different role, I wouldn't mind him off a HBF either with Hind or Redman on a wing. He's a burst player, fast off the mark but afaik not so blisteringly quick over 10-15 metres. Considering who we had "keeping" him out of full forward he was right to pull up stumps.
There's a big difference between mocking and criticism/scrutiny. Players should take criticism, but they don't need to tolerate mocking. Are you saying that we shouldn't call out or eradicate mocking for fear of reducing tolerance levels? Cmon.Aren't you saying that Parker's behaviour needs to end? That we need to protect fragile people from a position that commands public scrutiny?
There is no version of that protection that works, generally. Experiences suggest that all you end up doing is reducing tolerance with the outcome being roughly the same (that people become just as upset with things that, objectively, are not as serious).
It's how you end up with generations of players that coaches need to apologise to.
The scene is from March 2019. It was around the time of Dylan Shiel’s 26th birthday, his first since joining Essendon in one of the central moves of an incredibly eventful trade period.PLAYERCARDSTART9Dylan Shiel

In a meeting before training, Rutten made special mention of Shiel’s birthday. Then during the session, the digital scoreboard at The Hangar showed a message to mark the birthday.
All nice, friendly, innocuous, if unusual. According to club insiders, few if any other birthdays of players or staff were acknowledged in such fashion.
Fast forward about 18 months, to the Bombers’ stint in a Queensland hub as part of the Covid-19 affected 2020 season. By this point, Rutten was the coach in waiting, anointed in the succession plan with Worsfold. Shiel had been elevated to the Dons’ leadership group. Essendon had started that season well, advancing to 5-2 before capitulating to win just one more match under Worsfold.
