Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

I was always firmly of the opinion that Dimmas private life had no impact on the playing group but for Cotchin to come out publicly and say these things, clearly I was being naive. I'm glad Trent has come out publicly with it, and I'm glad Dimma is gone, his time at the club was untenable by the end. That unity we had at our peak was no longer there.

The good news is that Yze and the coaching group can fix this issue and it should make a huge difference on field next year.
maybe it just had an impact on Trent, beciase perhaps Brooke also had a strong relationship with Danielle???

When couple are friends as couples, and one couple busts up, the mrs always picks sides :tearsofjoy:

That's fact.
Saw Danielle at Cotchs farewell game in the official lunch. Loved by many in the room.

exactly... so maybe it had a really big impact on Trent, and that's ok. But maybe it didn't have that much of an effect on the younger boys...?

No doubt it impacted Trents relationship with Dimma personally, but he also said it distracted the group and the teams 'insane connection' was never the same.

He was preaching to young newly married/engaged blokes I have no doubt that his relationships impacted on dome in the playing group , however much posters on here say it didn’t, Cotchin coming out has said it

worked out well for him though getting paid more than gill to take over a team with no fans and no real expectations. living the dream.
It worked out better for us. Quit rather than get sacked. Saved RFC a shedload .
End of the day a 13 year coach had a crack with a good enough list.
Didn't work so be it. Mini had a trial run and also not up to it.
We ended up with an amazing coaching group at the club

Our ex assistant coaches are doing well.
The suns a basket case. Have good players
I'm an hour and half from the Goldie, AFL is popular
If sun's can find success it'd be good for footy up here

Did it effect our football?
Answer is no.

Disagree completely.

There was a noticable difference on field, a lot of our values of connection and love didn't quite seem the same externally, we lost something as a team and playing for each other at it was as obvious as anything.

For Cotchin to admit it effected him and possibly others, it no doubt effecting the playing group and culture, he was the bloody captain. It effects how you engage, how you train, your commitment and all the little things you do around the club and if you think that doesn't effect football on field you're kidding yourself.

The chimp has given his own version of events...not the definitive one...Balmey will have a big say on that!

Exactly, and don't downplay the influence Cotchin had on the group.
A weakened relationship between Cotchin and Dimma would have had an effect on the rest of the playing group.

Yeah that’s it
People have different standards and expectations
I have a mate who was doing the dirty on his mrs (known a few but this one had kids involved) and I let him know how I felt about it and how I was disappointed but other guys loved that fact he was doing it and would egg him on kind of thing

We have no idea how the Chimp influenced the playing group...
And as for a weakened relationship between the Chimp and dimma having an effect on the rest of the playing group...
Who definitely knew?!?

Come off it mate. Its a team sport.Oh no i'm not gonna go that extra mile because my coach split up with the wife,FMD.
And once again you lot miss the obvious point. We made finals that year and should've went further. So how the hell did it effect our on field performance?

Some people get it, others don't

Its not just that he had marriage issues, Dimma is quite clearly not even close to the same man that he was 3 or 4 years ago. His whole demeanour was completely different towards the end compared to 2017-2020, just watch his pressers and media appearances. That's fine, people change, but quite clearly that change slowly but surely affected the connection of the entire group.

It may not be an issue at GC as he has already gone through that transformation, that's the only Dimma they will know.

We did not make finals 2021

And some just put 2 +2 =3.
You have your head in the sand. Would you have better insight than Trent Cotchin?

From Cotchin, the captain of the playing group.

“Did it impact my relationship with Dimma? I would say yes, at that point, 100 per cent.

“We had built this culture on a platform of family, connection and love – and Dimma and Danielle’s relationship had played a big part in all this – so it was only natural to be worried about the potential fallout.”

“The second was in my capacity as captain, because I was concerned with how what was unfolding might impact the team.

“Was it a distraction for the group? In my view, at times it was,”

“I am not sure my relationship with him ever got back to the level it had been before.

“For whatever reason, there always seemed to be a bit of a barrier between us. Maybe it wasn’t just the captain and the coach; maybe it was emblematic of the group’s connection that season.

“We didn’t lose the plot in 2021 but if I reflect properly, there just wasn’t the same insane connection between the playing group that had been our suit of armour from 2017 to 2020.”

But yeh I'm sure Cotchin was completely oblivious to how it affected the playing group..... It clearly affected him, and if it affects him, it directly and indirectly affects others.

Cotchins missus being strike 1 up on the Goldie ended up leading to a 100k fine. Which ended up contributing to us losing good assistant coaches.

Dimma had a wage rise at a time that had negative consequences on the club.
Every player having to take cuts

End of the day. Back in Melbourne, with stand rule we were hovering about 8th.

Injury to Martin was something that we hadn't experienced

Dimma divorce didn't help and was another factor in life post the Gold coast hub
