The police have woefully inadequate training to deal with dementia and mental health. Their response is to confront, demand dropping of weapon then respond sometimes with lethal force. Just terrible.

I remember a mentally ill guy with a knife on a Sydney beach where exactly that transpired. On that occasion they didn't bother to taser just killed him.

It's a repeat problem and badly needs addressing. More care is offered to a dangerous escape animal which is tranquilized. The problem is police don't have the training and assume cognitive capacity and intent and have standard responses.

A 95 yo wouldn't have even been able to raise the knife before her wrist was grabbed and the knife shaken free. Pathetic. Much better than to kill her. Even better distract her and let her calm. Watch her. Call a carer to work. Damn there were a dozen better alternatives

The acting sergeant was more senior who should have been firmer but it sounds like this bloke just got trigger happy and fired.

I wonder if the fact his he is far too fat and unfit to be a cop influenced his decision not to try and take the knife and instead get trigger happy.

White's senior has already put on slash-proof gloves acting in preparation and stated a confidence in taking the knife off Nowland, White has gone straight over the top of her in an act of gross insubordination and verbalised it with 'No, bugger it.'

Then tried to take over and making a hero out of himself as if he was the one who successfully handled the situation and told his senior to then grab the knife.

Who else this idiot has bullied and victimised over the course of his career could be examined.

Dunno ... I can't imagine there won't be an upgrade in charges if it looks complicated and I don't think we've got a formal cause of death yet.

I missed this when it was first published, out of the Daily Fail but they do refer to taking their information from an earlier 2020 ABC report on White's history.

A senior constable who allegedly Tasered a frail great-grandmother once unlawfully detained a motorcyclist, with his shift partner allegedly threatening to break the man's legs, a report has claimed.

She was scathing of the officers and described their conduct as 'outrageous', according to an ABC report from the time.

'I'm horrified by the conduct of these officers,' Magistrate Boss said.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb was grilled about the previous incident involving Senior Constable White by Today show host Karl Stefanovic on Tuesday.

'Part of this investigation around the Mrs Nowland matter will take into account the officer's history,' she said.

'As I said it will be a very complete full investigation. An urgent review into that officer's history and his current work status.'

Not trying to excuse him, but could she have been a risk to use the knife on herself (either purposely or accidently) and the officer saw the taser as the lesser of two evils? Obviously didn't work out well if that was the intention.

Fair point Matty but I think disarming her in many different ways could and should have been the priority. Not tasered .

Are there really 'so many more challenging societal issues' that NSW Police have to deal with 'than they did even just a decade ago'?

For starters there's COVID, anti-vax, right wing extremism, way over the top civil libertarians and deluded cookers.

URGENT REVIEW OF COP TRAINING​

The state’s top cop has called for an urgent review of all mental health training for officers and the procedures around responding to emergency calls involving people with mental health issues.

While mental health training is an ongoing element of officer education, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed she had met with her executive team to discuss the need for reform as a matter of priority.

The Saturday Telegraph understands the meeting took place prior to the tragic Cooma incident in which an elderly grandmother was tasered and later died in hospital.

“However, that review will now be fast-tracked,” Ms Webb said.

“I have called for a review of all mental health training, the way we respond to incidents and the head of the negotiation unit will be involved in helping us plan the best way forward.

“This is a matter of priority for me. I understand both the demands on police, the specialist care required and the community’s expectation to get this right.”

Commissioner Webb said the role of a police officer was constantly changing and the force needed to evolve and be on the “front foot”.

She stressed it was important police “could not do it in isolation” and would draw on the expertise of other agencies when it comes to mental health issues, brain disorders, and conditions such as dementia.

“As issues impacting our community evolve and change, so too do the expectations on our police,” she said.

“Police in 2023 deal with so many more challenging societal issues than they did even just a decade ago.

“We need to have a thorough understanding of the challenges people face and be equipped with the skills and knowledge to respond accordingly.

While reluctant to put a date on the time frame of the review, the police chief said the review was a matter of priority.

We all have a default fight/flight/freeze response to stressful situations (I've seen it first hand with PSOs). To overcome this you need to be trained really well (and have experience). It appears this individual was not fit to be a police officer (no pun intended). Standards in recruitment have slipped over the past decade or two for several reasons. There's no evidence the trend is reversing.

I work with senior security guys, they understand how to handle violence. I don't have confidence that the police departments in Australia are recruiting and developing people in an appropriate manner. Dealing with the mentally or drug-impaired is a shit show but tasering a 95yo woman...?
