Yeah probably a fair point.

Corica is a club legend of Sydney FC but probably ran his race at the Smurfs.

Not sold on Talay being the right fit for Sydney tbh but I guess time will tell.
He did well at Wellington especially during the difficult COVID seasons where expectations are probably not as high as they will be at Sydney FC. He'll be given a honeymoon period but make no mistake he'll be under pressure to deliver and deliver quickly.

If it wasn't for COVID, I legitimately think that season we could have really pushed to win the league.

I hope he does well...

...Not as well as us though 🤭

I was quite surprised by these figures considering the J League is widely regarded as hugely successful:

2022 crowds. Makes one appreciate just how much potential there is in A Leagues if the formula is right (2 divisions, promotion / relegation, right TV deal, free market etc etc).

Considering the difference in population and population density in Japan being hugely in favor of Japanese clubs I feel it's a big win for A league clubs crowds wise.

How can we risk promotion/relegation though? MV almost finished bottom last season; the league is finished without them. I'd argue it would be almost as disastrous if, WSW/Sydney/AUFC went down despite us being smaller...

Once a club goes down, especially in a small market like CCM, they're never coming back. Players won't move there for div 2 salary so you're only getting local talent in your quest to come back up. We'd probably struggle in that regard despite being bigger. What hope would Wellington/Aukland/Canberra have if they went down (once they're in)? Very little

Maybe I'm just skeptical as decision makers here never get anything right but I really can't see relegation helping. Would add intrigue to the relegation battle each season for sure but clubs would go bust once they do I think. Just isn't enough money to get clubs through

There won't be promotion / relegation for quite some time.

It will (and must) happen eventually. Relegation battles keep crowds coming & TV interest up. Imagine a TV deal including Socceroos, Matilda's, A League / A League 2, FFA Cup & W League. Massive $$$.

I don't think it will be massive money. No one's watching the aleague now so who will bid big to get it? FFA cup even less & WLeague not worth a cent so it's just bundling the money spinners Matildas/Socceroos.

Agree 100% relegation battles would be better. But once those clubs get relegated it'd spell the death of them. CCM/Wellington would never be back in the top flight once relegated.

We need investment but there's no ROI for owners to invest.

Put every game on 10 ffs. Admit Paramount hasn't and won't work, just let people watch. Grow the thing organically until a TV deal that works comes along imo.

There will be massive money, the Socceroos & Matildas on their own are huge in their own right. This combined with A League & A League 2 is a very attractive TV rights deals. W League and FFA cup are just jam on top. There isn't an equivalent on the Australian market that gets the same international exposure.

The ROI is a thriving league in 10-15 years time with 15k average crowds in A League and 8-10k average crowds in A Leauge 2 with W League games regularly attracting 8-10k.

As for relegated clubs I can forsee a parachute payment type system when it eventually comes into play. But we are talking 2032-2035 timeframe for promotion / relegation.

Fantasy land stuff here sorry. Will never happen

ALeague 2 won't get that either, the Aleague doesn't or barely gets that. That has more chance than the wleague ever getting there though. More chance I play at the next WC (will be a giant leap from div 2 amateurs)

The A League had average crowds of 14600 in Season 3. It's not fantasy stuff at all.

A League 2 many of those clubs are already pulling 3-5k in local comps. Entirely feasible that they double those figures once playing in an established fully professional 2nd division with a promotion battle.

It must be said that these targets are 10 years off.

I didn't say aleague crowds averaging 15000 was fantasy. I said wleague getting 8-10+ is.

In 10-15 years I can see it getting pretty big. By then we will have a whole generation of girls brought up on the game and they'll be supporting W League teams.

We already had 11k in the opening round of the W League this season for the Sydney Derby.

It won’t be a simple one-up, one down promotion relegation. Guarantee there will be a play-off as an insurance policy for A-league sides to stay up.

A lot of European Leagues have relegation play offs which would certainly be attractive to broadcasters in Australia as it would be completely different to any other code in the country.

Personally I like the winner of second div automatically gets promoted, bottom automatically relegated and then there’s relegation play offs ie. 2nd/3rd last play off and play offs in second tier ie. between 2nd-5th with two legged ties and eventually the losers of the top tier play the winner of the 2nd tier play off for the final spot in the top league.

All those fixtures would be enticing to watch as a neatral and the two legged system adds to the drama of it all.

The target for laying the foundations of the stadium, per the chairman, is mid-to-late 2024. And the 2026-27 season timeline is one he absolutely intends to keep.

But this, of course, isn't the first time commitments have been made on this front: A tweet sent out by the then West Melbourne Group (WMG) bid in October 2018, boldly stating: "Our stadium building partner guarantees a construction time of 20 months. We will be playing in our privately funded and owned stadium by Season 3!"

A detailed chat with the chairman on ESPN. We've heard these promises before, but let's hope it's sometime before 2030.

The annual Western United stadium assurance article, Its really really happening now or soon or later.

Public private partnerships are rock solid. The Wyndham shire wants to build a new suburb centred around the stadium.

This absolutely is happening, no private partner is going to walk away from public funding.

Wouldn't be happy with this if I were AUFC.

Considering that the ladies are playing on Sunday 5pm @ City Visa Reserve (a venue with 3k capacity) why couldn't the men play at the same venue?

Pack it out with 3000 fans and create a decent atmosphere. If they can setup Mars stadium for a few games why not play a few A League mens games here?

It would be right in the heartland of WU's target market.
