Half the issue was having a complete ****wit running the show and splashing $140m on that KeepUp crap that made no sense at all. That wasted $140m has played a significant part in the league being in such a dire financial position.

  • 2x expansion clubs into territories that were never going to work, ever
  • Paramount + deal that everyone with a brain knew would fail miserably.
  • Multiple clubs losing $ while they look to expand further, diluting a product fans are basically rejecting
  • Seemingly no effort to convert Matildas fans into womens soccer fans. This is important because the wleague teams would be costing each club a truck load. I'm sure the owners want this off the books but would be political/social suicide to get rid. Government should prop it up if it must exist as it clearly isn't sustainable currently. Streets behind aflw, wbbl, netball
  • Season running well into AFL season, can't win against that
  • Disastrous GF to Sydney decision
  • No marquees anymore
  • Owners get no benefit in investing. Can't own stadiums, bad TV deals etc. Nothing to bring in investors any more

Ultimately, it's failed again. Maybe a professional league just isn't viable? How many clubs, and leagues now once this dies, will it take to realise things don't work as they are. It's the shit mamagement/executive teams fault but soccer doesn't attract good executives it appears

Soccer from the ground up is ****ed here. It can't cost parents 4 figures to register their kids. It's broken at every single level and unless it's addressed and completely overhauled nation wide I'm not sure how the ship turns around

It may be a blessing in disguise. The clubs asked for independence and got it. There is no longer a safety net from the FA and their revenue streams.

It means the clubs will need to look at different financial models to be sustainable. In effect the clubs will need to start developing and selling players like CCM and Adelaide are doing successfully. To generate transfer revenue.

I think if we can get a whole league doing that it's actually a good thing because it promotes playing and developing young players. It's also just got easier to move to England under their changed immigration and transfer laws so that's good timing.

It'll be rocky but may be for the best.

I'd like to see a few things.

1. more player development and transfer revenue

2. A national second division and ultimately pro/rel in the future = a lot more opportunities for player development. There are steps in this direction already and thats good. Repair some bridges between old and new football.

3. A switch from Paramount to Optus for the broadcaster, even if that's more modest revenue. It's interesting that Optus got the rights to the FA Cup, stepping into the AL market. Clubs to spend within their means but get a broadcaster who actually cares.
