He had a contract, wanted to join Schalke 04 - why couldn't a transfer fee be agreed? Contract terminations should be banned in the A-League except in limited circumstances (compensation is paid for the termination, a player's career is over and both parties agree to a termination or any other scneario where a player cannot continue and a termination is agreed by both parties).
I see no reason why any club should simply terminate a contract so a player can pursue an opportunity in Europe.
