The games so far:

Winning teams points - 608
Losing teams points - 238
Which gives a percentage of 255.5!

Plus, two teams record their lowest ever score.

Well done AFL. The game is coming along nicely.

PS. Enjoyed the snow.

And Essendon were close to their lowest score. If not for that very early goal and some junktime goals they would have been goalless. Both Essendon and North were on 14 points midway through the last quarter, unbelievable.

I don’t get comments like this. Is it the AFLs fault that North kicked one goal the entire game? That Essendon looked bored and disinterested? That GWS look to have shat themselves because of how cold it was.

There is no rule change, no umpiring decisions, nothing the AFL could do or shouldn’t do to account for how terrible those teams were.

Giants had half of their best 22 out against The Hawks in Canberra. They have a legit alibi for their poor performance. Geelong were always gonna bounce back hard after a rough 2 weeks in the media, but I can't fathom Essendon's piss poor performance other than fatigue and some of their injury replacement/depth players are just no good.

And Brisbane are legit flag contenders and this year's Gold Coast outfit are the worst team I have seen since probably Fitzroy in 1996.

End of the day, there is just not enough AFL standard players in the league, they should have waited 10 years to bring in the Giants after the Suns. That is where all the current issues we have in footy, just about every club, bar arguably West Coast and Richmond have at least 3-4 players not elite level standard.

Was there a need for two new teams what was wrong with just having a 16 team comp? All GC and GWS did was comprise the draft for teams near bottom who had to rebuild.

Not enough talent in the country to have an 18 team comp

Correct but the AFL did it for growth. Western Sydney is huge in population and seemed like a big hole needed to be filled.
Gold Coast I’m not so sure about, people living in that part generally aren’t passionate about sport.
It’s a holiday destination and a retirement village.
In saying that they still thought the game could grow on the GC and Auskick numbers are good.

In the end, teams like north needed to relocate. Mergers like hawks/dees would’ve been great in the long run.
Footscray dying although not nice at the time would also now be beneficial.
Simply need less clubs and clubs being spread out.

Now there are still too many sides meaning more average players in the system and no chance of a real fixture.
12-14 team comp is ideal.

18 clubs with only 1 prize on offer is just too many because so many clubs go so long without flags.
Needed to sacrifice clubs to benefit the competition.

I understand what you're saying but it could be argued that we take a hit right now as far as talent spread goes, but we see a boost in 10-15 years when more kids in Western Sydney or Gold Coast start taking up the game instead of Rugby, or Soccer.

That also can be diminished by online sports and that some parents are too afraid they're child may get a scratch or bump a toe as it's such a dangerous world.

Repeat something enough times and people will believe it as fact.

The Gold Coast has been one of the fastest growing cities in Australia over the past 10-15 years, and is our biggest non-capital city. This idea that it's some transient place or population deadzone is outdated folly.

If this had been going on all year it might be a problem. It's just an abberation.

Yes it's an aberration after 20 rounds that this has been the lowest scoring year for something like 40 years

Gold coast is a dead spot for sports teams have a look at the NRLs history there.

Gold coast should have been Tasmania.

Nope, there are reasons there is a team was put on the Gold Coast before Tasmania gets a team, which I believe is still possible.

I would love to see a Tasmanian team, but I don’t think the numbers stack up financially. The AFL may have a license to print money and though it may look like NSW and QLD are money pits, they actually earn more for the AFL through broadcast rights per team, than Victoria and South Australia, due to having big populations and less teams.

Here are the numbers I looked at to come to my opinions (all sourced from the internet)

AFL Broadcast rights is on average $418 million per year. Divide that by 18 teams you get about $23 million per team.

Based on 2017 handouts per team average $15 million. GWS and GC getting $23 million; BRI $22 million; StK $19 million, and WB & NM $16 million. At the other end, wealthy clubs got less i.e.: COL $11 million.

The reason the AFL gets so much money from the broadcast rights is through advertising and sponsors in bigger states. Victoria, NSW and QLD.
Based on the 2017 AFL Grand Final viewers, Victoria on average supplies 40% of people watching AFL; 20% from NSW; 13% from WA and QLD; 10% from SA and 3% from Tasmania.

I used these viewer figures against the $418 million broadcast rights and found that the 10 Victorian teams translate to about $17 million per team; NSW 2 teams $43 million per team; WA $28 million per team; QLD $25 million per team; SA $21 million per team and if you went off the viewer figures Tasmania would be about $17 million if they had a team.

This shows me that QLD and NSW are pulling their weight in making the AFL money.

Only NSW could afford another team based on population and viewership, but I can’t see that happening or where they would put it.
I can see the AFL propping up teams with the broadcast rights through till 2023 where they could put a team in Tasmania, but at a cost.

Every other sports team on the Gold Coast has lacked the funding and league support that the Suns have.

Yes, let's put a new team in a freezing state with a small, stagnate population. They won't have retention issues or require any proping up at all...

Couldn't agree more! My son lives on the GC, believe me there are a lot of young people/families there and it is growing fast. Also has lots of aussie rules clubs going along very successfully.

With the Lions winning this year has helped focus on AFL and away from rugby. Aussie rules will win out up in Queensland I have no doubt at all.

I'm just not convinced yet the SUNS have the right people to build them to where they need to be......but maybe I have been spoilt by the success of Fagan and Noble.

They'll get there..

are you one of the people who looks out the window to see that its raining and claims this is proof climate change doesnt exist? a single weekend of poor/weird footy does not mean that the game is ruined or whatever it is youre implying. get back to us if this happens once a month.

You mean like the entire year where we have seen the lowest scoring all round in living memory?

The same league support that had them training out of tin sheds until a year or two ago?

Not ideal, but the AFL have the means and impetus to change that.

Other Gold Coast teams in other sporting codes are always in danger of going belly-up financially, and their leagues never have the finance to stop it happening. The Suns don't have that threat of survival. For better or worse, the AFL appears to have learned a bit from Brisbane's introduction.
