It needs no introduction that this champion is considered clearly the best player in the AFL. Secondly, he almost singlehandedly kept them in the game last year and absolutely tore us apart despite being assigned a tag.

This has been mentioned at times other threads, but I think warrants its own discussion as to what we do, if anything, to try and curb his influence on the game.

Do we;
1. Try and tag? (not sure if possible)
2. Try to limit damage of possession by only tagging in numbers when he moves towards our 50, but let him run free in their back half?
3. Do nothing (like we did with Pendlebury, Griffen and co) and back our own mids/players to get the job done regardless of his output?
4. None of the above, and give your own "solution" if one exists?

ps: Even though I don't want him to have a night out against us, I must admit he is one of only a few players that I really enjoy watching for an opposition team.

I would have recruited myself to the club, played myself in this game, kneecapped Gazza, received a 22 week suspension and delisted myself at years end. :stern look

Probably the most likely to be effective compared to my options. I'll make yours number 5 for consideration in the off season :thumbsu:

I would go the heavy, negate-only tag. Basti for a half and Atley for a half.

I'm not sure Basti is strong enough to go with him at the contest, but would run with him no doubt. I like the idea of a hard tag.

I still think if we had someone go within 20m of Pendlebury at some stage of the night against the Magpies we could have won that......

i remember an old tactic that terry " the baron of bullshit " wallace discussed on that year of the dogs vid, they would target a specific player, put him in the gun, and the whole team would apply some sort of pressure/sledge at every opportunity, i figure mentally is the only way to slow gazza down a bit , and that might be a way of pissing him off a tad, and at least distracting him from the job at hand.

I don't think a hard tag is the way to go (won't work), but make sure we always have someone on him and that that player is putting as much pressure as possible on every possession he gets. The reason he is best going around is not only does he get so much of it, but he uses it so well. It's the latter aspect I'm more concerned about.

He'll get 25+ possessions, so what I'd like to see is that as few of those possessions are quality as possible.

We have tried to carrel him and we have tried the hard tag, we've also tried the weight of numbers approach with a few guys rotating on him. None have worked. He is a true champion. Probably the best mid I've ever seen. Comfortably in the best 3 players I've seen. I'd be giving a few of our young blokes a go on him. Basti, Atley, Macmillan to swap running with him all night. (Would've loved for Harper to get a crack too)

When does your 2 year suspension for stabbing that umpire with his whistle end Tiny?

There is a rumour that North are looking at re-drafting Tiny, heard it the same day I heard about the $800K. Coincidence?
