Re: Ablett to sign with Gold Coast - announcement at 12:30PM

Little bald **** won't even make the top 10 of the brownlow or play finals again.

Happy to swap phone numbers and catch up in person re: the brownlow.

What odds are you offering and what are you willing to lose?

Just cant believe some of the idiots on here berating Gaz, hoping that he'll be a flop a the goldie. its been a pure joy to watch Gary play, and a bonus to watch him in geelong colours and win flags for us.

i'm going to continue to enjoy to watch gary play, as every football lover does. If he went to play for a collingwood or Carlton perhaps a different story, but the gold Coast i am indifferent. For some reason though it annoys me that Gary snr has helped push this, i feel his god like status around Geelong is finally on the wane, particularly after we now have premiership players, jnr is 10 times the person his father is.

Blame Costa and the admin boys who wanted LIng to be captain after Harley,

To snub the Abletts, that's what brought it about, have no doubt.

Terrible news to hear guys. I was always hoping he'd stay at Geelong. From a Collingwood supporter perspective I thought our clubs were starting to build a dynasty rivalry, one that included Gazza (the best mid in the comp) playing for the greatest enemy to beat. Already hate the Gold Coast and I am fearful of who they will pinch out from under us after this weeks Granny is over?

Sadly for you and Saints, your turn is coming fast.

Still 2 to sign.. they said a keyforward and a ruckman.. 2 teams to play.. i wonder if its a pie and saint they are after.

Probably, they would have made those 2 announcements otherwise. Ruckman...maybe Fraser or McEvoy? Key Forward...Cloke? Anthony?....not sure which key forwards at St. Kilda have not been getting a game....maybe Kosi or Roo as a shock announcement???

I share the same sentiments. I'm a little shocked at some reactions I've read in this thread, as to the very end Gary Ablett never stopped trying to help his team win, even when the game against Collingwood was all but lost by the third quarter when Geelong trailed by some 81 points. A 40 possession game in his very last match in Geelong colours is a testimony to his enduring professionalism to be the best footballer he can possibly be.

If Geelong was unable to beat Collingwood this year, I don't see Geelong being able to transform overnight to be able to beat both Collingwood and St Kilda in order to win the flag net year even with Ablett. So, I don't think this is actually a bad thing for Geelong. Two first round draft picks will go along way to another flag tilt in the future.

For a son of a Geelong superstar, who grew up in the Geelong area, I don't think any of us realise just how hard the decision has been. But remember, Ablett wore the no 29 guersey for a reason - because he wanted to be remember for his own professional achievements and not his fathers'. It is going to be tough for him, he wont have Selwood, Ling, Chapman and co to block for him anymore, which will mean he will have to learn to be a leading workhorse. Kinda like what has happened to Judd since coming to Carlton.

Anyway, it might turn out well for Geelong, you just dont know.

Today marks the end of an era. Where a club meant something. Where people work hard to support their local community and club meant something. Today we saw a son of Geelong slap everyone who has helped him and his family show how much that was all appreciated.

Opposition supporters have claimed that everybody would do the same. This is simply not true. Otherwise we would have seen true champions like Reiwolt leave their club and return to their home state. There was the opportunity for all players to double their salary by making their move. The quality of the players is an indication of the quality of the recruits.

In your press conference you claim you are excited about the new challenge, that money is not greater than loyalty, but money was important in the decision making process, and that you were excited to guide the younger players. Well Geelong has plenty of young players than need guidance, so the nuts and bolts of your announcement was that money was the sole reason for you leaving.

Your coach claims he was taken aback at how interested you were in the GC when you met them in the not so secret meeting. He could not believe how little convincing you needed. And you both claim to have never met again. This seems not very professional. And if your heart was at Geelong I would have thought that they should be convincing you.

There are rumours aplenty that you agreed to broad terms. In March Lynch even had ball park figures, which were denied.

You went on an overseas holiday with twenty family members, that was paid for by? Maybe you could tell the truth about this.

When Harley retired, you put your hand up to be a captain. You categorically stated that you wanted to be captain. That would have been good, inflict more pain on this club.

Senior C7 executives are adamant that there was a meeting of the scum six in Thailand prior to the commencement of this year with GC. All rumoured players signed up, including you. Yet you claim you just made up your mind.

The GC never made a huge play at Pavlich or Buddy, despite their contracts being up and you being uncommitted. Or did the GC have a feeling about you.

You are so short sighted that short term money is more important than your long term future. Your market cred in the home of football has been smashed. What you fail to realise other Judas acts were to deliver gold to Melbourne based clubs. Enjoy yourself in GC where you will need to use a magnifying glass to find an AFL story.

But somehow you just made up your mind yesterday, Pickers called GC yesterday, and the contract was done and dusted asap. The AFL really wanted this after the grand final.

Your manager meets with GC on Sunday, and you were there. But you send him to Geelong for a 45 minute meeting, and are yet undecided. Aha.

Lauren has the following quotes in a newspaper, Herald Sun 25 September 2010
‘but I could never see myself living anywhere but Melbourne’
‘but the reality is, at the minute, we don’t know. We don’t know what we are doing yet.’
‘But is suppose, regardless of what he does, I will be based in Melbourne’
But you claim that you have had a number of discussions with her, and she said she would support you either way. And she was annoyed about being questioned about this. But we believe you two were honest.

Then there is the website selling gear at huge prices until the season was over. No one can tell us why it was not working. Given it was only yesterday that you made up your mind. The Ablett’s are happy to take money off hard working folk, who need to save for weeks for a signed photo or months for a signed top. That’s ok, because it means more money in your pocket I suppose.

Your family home being on the market was a simple coincidence. It could have been sold last year or next year. But putting it on the market as the season finishes was just luck. We firmly believe you.

The GC placed an image of you in their newspaper. There was plenty of anger from the Geelong Football Club but not you. You seemed happy enough. But that was innocent enough, as you were still 90% sure of staying.

But here comes the crux of why very loyal Geelong supporter is angered by your Judas act. Your family has been protected and helped like no other family in the AFL. Cook and Costa have been more of a father to you and your siblings when Senior was off on a tangent. Your family received financial support well after your father retired.

How many times was your mum broke, and the club came to the rescue. How many times has the club been there for you when you grew up? Your family would have been a laughing stock without the support of the GFC. But I suppose that means nothing to you or your family.

Your dad was a great player. But he was a destructive force within a club. He was well remunerated but a selfish bloke. He caused the club a great deal of pain whilst he was there and even afterwards. Maybe ask him about the photo that Nixon pulled from being published.

The truth will come out one day, and we will know what the club did to ensure there was minimal damage to the Ablett name despite the behaviour of your father.

Your manager claims you were underpaid during your last contract. But you were overpaid when you signed it. It was loaded for upside, with the risk on the club. You have blossomed, and the club was never going to deny you a hefty pay rise. The club has treated no-one like you. The Geelong community has treated no-one with the love and affection that you have received.

Your brother was held with cotton gloves. He was paid overs in 2007, and in 2008. he was given a medal. The club have assisted him in GC, because he is your brother.

And those who claim that the club would have cut you at a minutes notice need to look no further than how the club has treated M. Egan. He has not been cut and thrown on the gutter. The club has been extemporary in this case.

I suppose as a kid you mixed with Billy and the boys, and felt at home being in the rooms with great Geelong players. That did not mean much. That did not create a passion, a bond that was irreplaceable.

But in summary I am happy that you are making this announcement this week. Hird shows what a true champion does. He loves his club too much to see it down, and sacrifices an easy life to lead his club. And you as the greatest player in the league take the money and run. Cheers, I am sure everyone wants to have a drink with you.

Good riddance, clubs don’t need people like you. Families make sacrifices to support their club, all you care about is yourself. But make sure if you end up like your old man that your kids don’t come to Geelong for handouts.

Why should we welcome you back? To make more money in retirement from loyal people who work hard. You deserve the money and the GC. Your family has been disgraceful. Never has there been a more talented family that has had so many issues, and is so blasé.

Enjoy, as we are Geelong. And you are a scumbag.

While i do not think clubs in general show much loyalty to players, the GFC have shown a great deal to the Ablett family over the years for all sorts of reasons and they in turn have been given some of the best footballing cattle going around. So ithink overall thats even.
I'm disappointed for the players who have taken less to stay and now have this thrown in their faces.
I'm disapointed for the kids with number 29 on their backs
I'm disappointed for the Admin whom could not have done anything else
I'm disappointed for GA whom will not be a 300 game one club player
I'm disappointed for the supporters like me who have watched the Abletts since the 80"s go round
However ,this should be looked on as an opportunity, a chance to play a new way, our list is as good as any, while getting on their is plenty of youth around. A chance to show the footy world we will not go back to the old ways , we dont need one man no matter how good.
As he shuts the door , somebody else will open it, i'm looking forward to how they respond next year and gut feel we'll be okay...

The AFL has caused this, i will forever have a overwhelming dislike for the Suns and hope upon hope that the GCS and GWS do not have dominating success that rewards this type of contrived, unfair equalisation and ruins our game forever.

It was going to happen to one club and unfortunately we are a victum of our own success here.I just hope we protect ourselves against the GWS.

Go Cats

Shame really. He could have been one of Geelongs greatest sons, respected and admired for eternity. Instead he will be known as a money grabing Judas who abandoned the club when it needed him most.

You have to also wonder about Pickering and the other guys advising him because the money he will earn in the short term is about what he could have earned if he stayed at Geelong for the long term. Various companies located in Geelong would have paid him a small fortune for the next 30 years to be their Ambassador. But then again if this silly, gullible, brainless little muppet chose that path, his snake of a agent wouldn't not have received his larger share of the pie.

I hope he gets booed as a Judas at every game.

Well Said Me,most people will never know the depths that the GFC went to save that family just ask former mangers

While i'm feeling completely shattered right now i don't think i can comment on Gazza........That press conference today was my worst nightmare just watching that door while guy mckenna and everyone was setting up....waiting, waiting................a murmur from the journos in the background..... next the cameras start clicking as a one G.Ablett walks through the door. Even though i new he was leaving it was a massive shock to the system seeing him wearing that red shirt................ I'll equate the feeling to 08...........I'm going to crawl into the foetal position now and maybe hibernate till march 2011.

This really is the AFL's fault. They made it relatively easy for GC to to this.

What is crazy is that GC give up nothing to get him. They still keep the top group of draft picks. The compensation for Geelong is not even close to what the best player in the comp. is worth.

We now have such a crooked system in the AFL we should just go free market - no salary caps, players can go where they want if not on contract. At least everyone knows the rules, and we don't rely on AFL executives to come up with stupid and unfair decisions like the compensation picks offered to Geelong.

As for GAblett he is a great player and it is a shame he is leaving Geelong but many of us would find very difficult to reject such an offer.

Not... Sure.... If Serious?

You realise this is... uh, illogical yes?

The whole concept of being tried before a court is the ability to have evidence provided for both sides; for and against.

You wouldn't have to blindly, irrationally follow what is said but rather you would consider the evidence provided and come to a logical conclusion.

So, what is being proposed by other posters is that they looked at the evidence that had been presented throughout the media and any other avenue they had available, came to a conclusion and stuck with it. That conclusion being Gaz was signing on with the Gold Coast.

I think you just completely misunderstood your analogy there.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

What evidence did the media provide? A source told them? Someone told them this? Ablett was seen at a meeting? etc.

Anybody can say what they want for fifteen minutes of fame. In court, witnesses who testify to something can have their version of events tested. How do you, or anyone know if every bit of evidence presented was heresay.

The media have often got it wrong in the past. Someone can tell them something, and they can run with it, without checking first.

I just feel that if the media KNEW something, they should state how they know. If Ablett's signing was known by the media for months, then one of them needed to come out and catergorically state that it was the case, and provide evidence of how they know. The media talk about the public's right to know. Well, Geelong supporters needed to know what they knew, and how they knew. It is not good enough to get it from heresay.

Re: Ablett to sign with Gold Coast - announcement at 12:30PM

Sad day for the game IMO:thumbsdown:
I guess your club would know first hand what it's like to have wads of money to throw at the best player in the competition. It is a sad day for the game but it's not the first time it's happened and it certainly won't be the last. Supporters at the Eagles felt just as gutted when Juddass shafted us on the pretext of going back to Victoria for family reasons. It burns like hell when you see a former champion of your club smugly running around in the colours of another team. I sit back and smile when I see Carlton failing to live up to the dreams they had when Juddass began playing for them.

Re: Ablett to sign with Gold Coast - announcement at 12:30PM

too gutless to face his team mates

he sent an SMS total captain behaviour

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

You know, one of the things I have always liked about our club is how we look after our own. Matthew Egan goes down, and we don't toss him from the club, but give him a coaching role. Tom Lonergan was given a second chance after he lost his kidney playing football for us. GFC has always been known for its charity.

I am thinking, after today, maybe this needs to change a bit. If Gazza snr was as selfish as you say, plus junior not paying us back with loyalty to the club, and if Thommo has claimed "burnout", only to pop up at Essendon, then we are getting taken advantage of too often.

Maybe Geelong needs to be more "ruthless". What I mean is, we won't be pushed around by anyone anymore, not on the field, nor off it.

Even today, the team seemed too gracious in what they said about Ablett. People take advantage of us, and we be a doormat. This needs to stop.

Geelong should be angry about this. We should bottle this anger, and the team take it out on the field next year. When we play the Suns, play as hard on Ablett as anyone else. Let's push the envelope with our aggression on the ball, and on the field, without going over it.

I want to become the most feared team in the league. I want it to be that when you play Geelong, you feel like you have gone 12 rounds. I'm not talking thuggery, but controlled aggression.

Also, we need to start to demand loyalty. Anyone who is at Geelong now who isn't planning to commit, should leave. Going forward, we need transperancy from each and every player, coach and official.

The media and other clubs are even kicking us at the moment. The new Geelong needs an "us against the world" mentality. When someone puts ona Geelong jumper, it stands for pride and loyalty, and it must be shown always.

If we find out any player has signed with GWS, or is suspected too, we need to investigate it, and remove them if true. No longer can we tolerate dissention. It is the Geelong way or the highway. We are loyal to those who are loyal to us, but those who do us wrong must know not to cross us.

Anyone who leaks to the media is out. Anyone who doesn't declare every meeting or negotiation to the club is out. No more second chances. We go too soft on people, and it needs to change. Any media outlet making false stories against us should be treated with the contempt they deserve.

Geelong needs to adopt the Peter Finch mentality -"We as mad as hell, and we are not going to take it any more". Look out anyone who crosses us. You will be sorry.

Sad thread, needs something to remind us of who really loves the club...

Bomber owes us nothing. He has been awesome for the Cats. He wanted to step down, less stress and play a role like Balme. Ablett just wants cash, and has been looked after by the Cats all his life.

this one hurts more than any other will. He was Geelong. And his family have behaved like gypsies

I am amazed that people think it is ok for him to make a speech tomorrow. It is JUST A GAME, and maybe he can text everyone

Terrible news to hear guys. I was always hoping he'd stay at Geelong. Not to cause waves, but Travis Cloke is still out of contract, isn't he?

Maybe he re-signed. If he did, congrats for retaining him. But, I heard someone suggest that his father, David, who manages him, would push him to the Gold Coast if it paid more.

However, I don't know if GC have much money left under the cap, after paying Gazza.

Hendo it seems they have another mil or 2 to spend.

Cloke is still unsigned.

They are going to have an awesome undeveloped side it seems
