All of it was reported at various stages in the media.
That's not fact either.

But like I said, none of it is fact. The AFL approached Ablett.

I remember reading it all of it in hard copy form (2008 - 2011). If I had the links to the articles I'd provide them.
The media also reported that Bomber Thompson quit Geelong citing burn-out despite agreeing to terms with Essendon in round 3 of that year.

I don't think that is "fact", either.

I have heard Ablett approached the Suns and McKenna is on record as saying he was surprised Ablett made first contact. I have heard the AFL supported it. But its and old story now, and with Pickers in the background, there may have been a dozen sub-plots going on. But we can agree Ablett wasn't 15 at the time. He was a grown man who made his decision and he made it around Nov 2010.

I didn't say the Suns or McKenna approached Ablett, the AFL did. And then gave him an offer too good to refuse after he knocked them back.

And that's just it, he's worth so much more to Geelong than anywhere else. Perhaps if he had his time over again, he may have made another choice.
Membership, attendance figures at Geelong and merch will skyrocket this year.
If he had his time over again I'm sure he'd refuse the new contract and returned to us in 2016. He would have made a real difference to our chances that's for sure.

I have heard this too, what you and Nakia are saying. But I have never heard anyone in authority and who would know the story put their name behind it, though.

Would not surprise me, in fact I'd say it is the more probable scenario. Just don't know it as fact yet.
Does it matter now though/
He is back, and he has no lack of temerity in returning.
Let's look forward.

Do you mind if I ask how you know this? I wasn’t around bigfooty back then, and so I’ve only ever had access to what was said and written publicly. I’m always sceptical of the media, so I’d love to hear the other version.

Ablett approached the suns
Ablett was given no alternative but to approach them.

I can't really reveal my source at the time but there's a few posters here who know who it is.

I will say though that I e-mailed a certain media personality in regards to this and he grilled the current league chief about it in public, who basically confirmed it without stating as such. (try to dodge the line of questioning) Willo_ has seen the e-mail.

Also during the year that Bomber Thompson left I worked with one of the head trainers at Essendon and he told me quite early (about round 3) that our coach had agreed to terms at Essendon. It was ironic given his treatment of Ablett during that entire season.

Demetriou must have had incriminating pictures (or something of that ilk) of GAJ for him to have no option but to sign on the dotted line for a 10 million dollar 5 year contract. I knew the AFL was corrupt but this takes the cake.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. I always hoped there was more to it when Gaz left, though I would never begrudge him for leaving anyway. But that's really disappointing about Bomber. Hard to understand or justify his actions toward Ablett that year.

It's true mate.

My belief is this AFL run club (GC) needed a marquee player and went after Ablett to fill that role. Although Balme hasn't said it in so many words he has suggested it was an AFL initiative with GAJs first years income being $1.8M

Its not just the AFL.

NBA has same issues - see CP3 trade to Lakers that got stopped.

GM of NO team told LA GM he was authorised to do deal. LA agreed and trade was approved by both club and submitted to NBA league office.

David Stern, then CEO on NBA (NBA also owned, administrated and ran NO NBA team) vetoed trade - as Stern was the "superior CEO" of NBA and thus the team. He didnt want Lakers to get a big name again and for a developing team to lose a star.

SO trade was shut down and Lakers missed out and got worse as a team and the rest is history.

Im not a NBA or Laker fan - just highlighting there are professional sports examples outside AFL where management manufactures outcomes.

Go Catters

Hmmm that CP3 trade was a bad deal for all involved except for the Lakes of course. Stern was temporarily looking after NO and it would've been difficult to find a new owner if the team consisted mostly of scrub players and dud picks. Stern did what he did not to hurt the Lakers but because he needed a reliable billionaire to buy NO for a good price as well. And allowing that Laker deal would've made it extremely difficult to find a good owner and good price for NO, so Stern did what anybody with a half brain would've done in his position and stopped that trade from going through. In this instance the interest of the league trumped Stern's pet's interest (the Lakers) and for very good reasons.
