At the start of the year I was firmly in the camp that believed you simply couldn't argue with that amount of money.

As the year's progressed however, I've been thinking more and more about the Ablett name at Geelong and have come to the point where I can't stop dwelling on the damage it has now incurred, and the great loss of history the club has suffered as a result. It is a serious blow and very, very sad to see.

As for the way he's handled it, I'm inclined to get angry about that but will to see what comes out in the aftermath.

The thing that is sad, is it dilutes the Ablett name, legend, record and love down at Geelong. That is the one, truly sad thing.

Gazza signed with GC half a season ago. The selfish little shit just wouldn't fess up to it. He and his management are dirty liars!

I agree with this, someone on the Adelaide board posted way back in April this year that they were told from a very reliable source that Nathan Bock, Nathan Krakouer, Gary Ablett Jnr and Jarrod Harbrow had all signed letters of intent with the Gold Coast in the 2009 off season.

Five months down the track and they have all (besides Gaz) now been confirmed. It's safe to say that just like with Nathan Bock irrespective of what the player tries to say all the deals and agreements between the players and the GC occurred around 12 months ago.

It might be seen as selfish on Gary's behalf, but if the AFL didn't give the GC the carrot to dangle in front of Gazza's face, then none of this would've happened IMO.

Do you seriously think he'd go if Geelong and the GC could offer the same amount of money?

By the same token you think Buddy and Roo weren't being offered similar coin to go up there?

As bad as I feel for Gaz leaving...I really cant hold it against him..No one should really. He is forever in the Shadow of his Father and everyone thinks he should stay at Geelong for Novelty or Sentimental reasons. He has been given an offer no-one can refuse (godfather) and once he sat down and made a list of Pros & Cons for each club adn did the sums, the GC won out. Its shit and I dont like it...but Jeez, giv ethe guy a break. Herald Sun headline "Ablett DUMPS Cats for Gold Coast" Now hows that fair. If anyone at the HS was given $10M over 5 years to go write for Age, they wouldnt want the word DUMPS in any article. Its unfair and despite my own feelings about it...i fully understand. I just hope he doesnt get a touch when we play them in 2011. MY HEART IS WITH THE CATS...NO PLAYER, NO COACH, NO OFFICIAL....GO CATS!!!!!!!!

Sorry people, I don't buy into the whole "Geelong don't owe Gary anything, Gary owes them" mentality. He is far from a mercinary too. This kind of money does not come along often- it is incredibly rare.

Gary Ablett has given Geelong some of the most dominant football every played by one player. In his time with the Cats, he has yielded 3 GFs, 2 premierships, a brownlow, BnFs, MVPs etc. The best player at the club and only on 750K. He, like every other player present and past that has made a decision to move clubs, does not owe Geelong anything. You guys should be completely grateful for all the memories he has given the Geelong Football Club and its diehard supporters.

He should always be remembered as a favourite son, after all, the Ablett name and legacy is the heart of Geelong.

There is no doubt about Gary's ability, his contribution to the football club, and the fact that the money on offer would tempt any of us.

What has soured the process, and tarnished his image in the Geelong football community, is the appalling manner in which he, and his management, have handled the whole negotiation / public relations exercise.

This mis-management of the entire affair is high-lighted by the fact that the story of his press conference / defection is broken in today's media with the acknowledgement that the Geelong Football Club doesn't even know yet!

The GFC are grateful to Gary for his contribution over the years, but surely, surely, he owed them the common decency to inform them of his decision before the story was broken?

For the GFC to learn of his decision through the media, and have Brian Cook resort to calling the journalist concerned for confirmation of this announcement is extremely disrespectful, amateurish and arrogant.

I wish Gary well in his future endeavours, but his light shines a little less brightly for me.

The Ablett name is entrenched in the culture of Geelong. He should always be remembered as a favourite son, not as a mercinary. The "little champ" has given you guys memories other football clubs and supporters can only dream of. For that, you should be grateful.
