Absolutely sick of the pimping of the "ANZAC Spirit"

The ANZAC spirit should net be mentioned before during or after this game of football ..watching blokes like Stanton and Ryder drop their heads and pull out of contests ..that along with Slattery and Jetta throwing their heads back pretending they have been hit..is a complete disgrace.

This is a game of football between highly paid footballers who are nothing like the courageous Aussie diggers.

Holy crap what a bunch of moronic idiots on the forum. If they knew anything of the ANZAC spirit, they'd better understand the promotion of the game.

1. Anzacs would openly play AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL on the grounds they occupied during WW1 and WW2. That was the number one sport.

2. There are a number of ex-VFL players, as well as all interstate clubs, but mainly in Victoria, that lost their lives in the war. The connection of teammateship and committment to one another as part of a unit coincides with the same ideals for a sporting team.

3. This game gets the dawn service, and every other ANZAC Day service, into the homes of millions and millions of people every year. It not only showcases AFL, but it also glorifies ANZAC Day, as is justified. There would be limited exposure to the day if the game was not built up as much it has been.

In conclusion, it is days like these that help shape patriotism and national pride. The AFL doesn't need ANZAC Day to sell out the MCG for a Collingwood vs Essendon game. They'd get a minimum of 75,000 there anyway.

all the anzac crap is just one big snoozefest that gets in the way of the game. IMO get over it and get another event this one has been done to death

While Federation was in 1901, its been said many times over the years that the nation was truly born on the shores of Galliopoli. He's not the first, he wont be the last to express the sentiment.

You can express a sentiment a thousand times and it will be no more correct the thousandth time than the first.

The Mad Max 2 style voiceover/montages are almost vomit inducing.

Sheesh people are gullible!

There is nothing glorious about war, and our men certainly did not die for patriotism or national pride. Reflect on the futility of war and our losses. Lest we forget.

I don't get why people are whinging about us making money from the gates on ANZAC Day? Collingwood & Essendon pull a crowd regardless, particuarly when both teams are up and about like this year.

Exactly if the Pies and Dons players wanna really play in the Anzac spirit, how about they dig themselves some holes to sleep in and live in there for a week before the game in their own shit and piss while living on a few cans of beans between them.

Then the whole time they can get 38cm langer max shells dropped on them and then while they play they can dodge land mines an machine gun fire.

AFLPA would never allow it.

So I am guessing that in the spirit of the day you would want to share the $700,000 that the two richest clubs in Victoria make out of this day amongst less wealthy teams- such as Carlton?

Oh, that's right. You own the Anzac Day event. No other team comes even close. Sorry I forgot about that.

what is war about if not patriotism or national pride? l would suggest that most of our and their men did die for it, for what other reasons would you fight for your country?
Lest we forget? We forget the stupidity of war everytime another war starts.

If we were fighting for our Country, that might be the case, however, WW1, Korea and Vietnam were definately not "our" wars

OK, cos I'm bored... how is fighting for 'our country' ok but fighting for our country's interests not?

No wars are OK, and Vietnam was certainly not in our Interests, we were just the lackeys for the Yanks. In a way you could say the same for WW1, that war didn't have the full-backing of the people btw, if I recall my history lessons, the Opposition Leader at the time was against conscription and forcing our men to fight the Empires battles.

so in WW1 Australia was apart of the British Empire. In Korea Australia was part of the United Nations. In Vietnam Australia choose to align with the US and anti-communist countries. All very much our wars as australia chose to participate.

Political correctness gone mad. No one seriously equates football with war but if someone even goes close to that topic the media jump all over them like they're waiting for them to slip up.

But they were in the government's best interests (and technically therefore the countries) due to the need to support alliances for both trade and for help against real and perceived threats.

war is just an extension of government policy

What a shit thread, coaches of both sides laughed at the thought playing football was anything close to fighting for your country.

The only element of the ANZAC spirit and probalby the most important element is mateship, and that is only element of the ANZAC's you could relate to an AFL footballer, and even then its quite a different level of mateship but the concept is similar.

This match, has gone a lone way to the respect that is now shown for soldiers which may have been much different if this game wasnt being played.

If its marketed as the Anzac ROUND then i think its about time other teams were not treated as a sideshow...which the way it stands now is all they get treated as.

This is what's wrong with it, it shouldn't be ANZAC Round, it's Anzac Day. To all the whining supporters of neutral clubs, stop being envious and just watch the game, otherwise go do something else.
Nobody wants to see your minnow clubs pay homage in front of 30,000 people.

Not quite, England wasn't involved in Vietnam, despite it being in their "best Interests", as far as their interests with thier major NATO ally was concerned. New Zealands involvement in Vietnam was extremely minimal, compared to us, despite ANZUS. The Kiwis are only minimaly involved in Iraq/Afghanistan also, hasnt harmed their National Interests either.

I did say perceived....

The UK is different from Aust and would have the political belief that they could defend themselves without outside help. Yes, NZs support is less than ours (they also have a very limited capacity), but they are still involved.....
