AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
As first flagged by The Age on Wednesday, AFL rules state a club can’t match more than two bids on academy prospects in the top 20 of a draft if, in that same year, it makes the finals and is eliminated prior to preliminary final weekend.
A club, too, is restricted to matching one first-round academy bid if it’s among the last four teams remaining in the finals.
Although The Age reported some recruiters were fearful the AFL would bend the rules for the Suns.
Comfortably No.1, Walter is a good prospect but Riewoldt was easily the best kid the country in 2000.From memory in his draft year, Riewoldt was No.1 with a bullet.
Yeah that’s bullshit that the father son and academy rules aren’t aligned here. Here we go. Opposition teams revisited the rule introduced by AFL when GWS was getting too many academy kids from Riverina. We could be saying goodbye (or hopefully see you later down the track) to Read or Rogers.
Hopefully, AFL will bend the rule as suggested or we better not make finals
Interestingly, it appears there is no problem to match multiple F/S in first round. If I remember correctly Lions last year played PF and matched 2 bids.

I dare say we’d be arguing this.
Surely they just change the rule.
Not sure that all 3 get bid on in the top 20, but if we’re playing finals then it’s a headache I can live with.

Provided we have enough points and selections in the right locations there’s nothing to stop us selecting a player before they’re bid on so we can still match bids for the remaining two players is there? Here we go. Can guarantee you a lot of recruiters from AFL clubs see Read as a genuine top 10 pick.Provided we have enough points and selections in the right locations there’s nothing to stop us selecting a player before they’re bid on so we can still match bids for the remaining two players is there?
Read in the top ten seems a reach to me anyway. I rate Walter and Rogers higher.
It looks certain that Walter will be top 5 pick before our 1st round pick. So we have to trade this pick or it will be eaten by Walter's match. Then we have no picks in 1st round to select Read or Rogers before bids come (if bids come indeed in 1st round).Provided we have enough points and selections in the right locations there’s nothing to stop us selecting a player before they’re bid on so we can still match bids for the remaining two players is there?

The last time a team had multiple high end academy players was Sydney in 2020 with Braeden Campbell and Errol Gulden. Can guarantee you a lot of recruiters from AFL clubs see Read as a genuine top 10 pick.
Yeah it was a Hail Mary in desperation. I prefer the flight risk strategy too!!It looks certain that Walter will be top 5 pick before our 1st round pick. I like flight risk strategy
Fair enough. Hoping for our sakes he slides (a lot) then. Can guarantee you a lot of recruiters from AFL clubs see Read as a genuine top 10 pick.
Gulden slide because of his height. Read is a 200cm athletic freak. He has top 10 reach all over him. I bet everything I have he doesn't slide to the second round. The last time a team had multiple high end academy players was Sydney in 2020 with Braeden Campbell and Errol Gulden.
Both rated incredibly highly from recruiters and AFL journos.
Campbell bid on at pick 5
Gulden bid on at pick 32
While Walter, Read and Rogers are all high end prospects, there is very good chance Walter gets bid on in the top 10 and Read and Rogers bid on in the 2nd round.

He definitely could and I hope he does. Small well built mids are prone to slide, especially if there is tall athletic project mids there instead. But Rogers could well slide.

It's hard to tell this early who is in the top 10 before the championships start.I like your optimism.....
I think there's more chance of a Rogers top 5 bid than there is a of a 20+ bid.
Rogers is easily top 20.It's hard to tell this early who is in the top 10 before the championships start.
Walter could definitely rise to top 3 though.
Hopefully Read and Rogers perform well but I just can't see recruiters taking Rogers in the first round knowing that there is so many players who play similar positions to him not tied to another club.
Read, just on height and athleticism alone, will probably go first round.
I am positive we'll get all 3 with the amount of points we've accumulated for this year's draft and also the ability to tap into next year's picks.
