Adam Cooney to play 250 games and retire

Well it's official.

Adam Cooney has publicly announced today that after playing his 250th game on Sunday against his old club, he will retire immediately after that match.

He does have a fair old CV once he retires.

Was the first number 1 draft pick to win the Brownlow.

Congratulations on what has been a pretty decent career.

His 2008 season was off the chain. Injuries took their toll otherwise the next generation of arm chair viewers would have known him as a dead set gun.

Unfortunate that he'll retire short of getting to play in our 2017 premiership team, but a fantastic career at the doggies and more than serviceable at the dons. Despite the injuries still manages to play 250 games which has been a huge effort.

Have not seen him play live for Essendon but can anyone tell me if the Essendon fans shout in unison "Cooooooon" whenever he gets the ball?. If not it would be nice to see the dogs fans getting back on board to do this even though he is playing for Essendon.

Just to clarify for those who don't know the injury history.
Cooney did his knee is a final against Hawthorn a few weeks before he was awarded the 2008 brownlow. It was just before his 23rd birthday and never got to his prime as a player.

He was never close to the same player after that injury.

Was an unreal player before the knee hit the skids, we never really saw him reach potential, people forget just how good he was. Could have been a bulldog great. Probably still is.

Unbelievable. It's like people feel sorry for a bloke when he retires and try and make themselves feel better by giving them compliments. The old chasers war on everything song - bastards turn into good blokes after death.

I think Cooney is one of the great "what ifs" of this era. Real shame injuries cut him down and took away his greatest asset (explosiveness) in his prime, and despite being a solid contributor never came close to playing his best again.
