To those who say we can get him cheap because he will take a pay cut.....

He is a restricted free agent. If we offer peanuts then Dogs will match it. The only ways open here are to pay overs or trade for him.

With the current club being able to match any offer how does it work if another club offers a one year contract on good coin (having no doubt had a little chat so that the player will then sing on for lower terms after that year, essentially front loading) which the current club would be stupid to match, a bit like a player putting a big one year price on his head in the PSD to ward off any club but his preferred choice.

Is there anything in place to counter this.

If we offered a big one year contract to him but the Dogs offered a 3 year deal that was bigger in total but less per average year, everyone would know what was up but would there be anything to stop the deal going through.

I would love to see Birchall as a midfielder, he is super quick and strong and instinctively breaks lines, he could be absolutely amazing. Quietly surprised it hasn't been trialled more, I wonder if they experiment with it at training/off-season. If he went into the middle and did well we would be a completely different team. I would go so far as to say it would make a huge difference to the immediacy of needing to rebuild...

I would pity the fool who had to line up on him at a bounce, he would remind me of Dangerfield, grab the ball, tuck it under the arm then smash through a couple of tackles to launch it 50m forward.

I don't think he has the acceleration to start the contest flat footed. Nor do I think he can bend low enough & move at pace to be an inside mid.

I'm not sure inside mid is the right term for Birch, as a midfielder he'd probably play more outside, basically a half back flanker that pushes further up the ground whilst getting more ball forward of the center. a Positive of this is that he wont get dragged to the last line of defence. he's in the play at all times. The ball in his hands forward of the center is an absolute nightmare for opposition, not to mention a very hard man to match up on because of his height, weight and speed.
In the stoppages he's a big body, hard to get around, he rarely fumbles when the balls at his toes, he's very clean, probably because he has a hunch back...he's closer to the ground when he bends over.

Apparently we have had talks with Cooney's management, not sure how interested we are but he is obviously on the radar. I think people are underselling his ability on this forum, we will only take him on if we are confident in his body, if his body is up to it then we have a genuine gun on our hands.

We are also into "sausages" Mumford and Taylor Adams.

That's a lot of salary cap......it has to be dependent on what Buddy does.

Good luck trying to pry out Mumford. We can offer him sarsaparilla when the swans can offer up limitless COLA.

Difference is the cats do not trade their best picks year after year like the Hawks have been doing. I have no real problem with that as the Hawks have landed a lot of key players. But, it has to change at some point.

I am not sure Cooney is that useful. Great player, but is he the line breaking running machine who go's both ways that the Hawks need?

Geelong has over the last few years had a much older list profile than ours

What we have done is fine - we have less over 30s than the Cats and the Swans

Don't forget recruiting Gunston, Smith, Stratton and Puopolo has been critical - players in their early 20s who can make an immediate impact

In 2008 we picked up Breust, Shoemakers, Shiels and Savage
Since then we've been able to successfully recruit 3 players every year - a 17/18 year old , an early 20s player and a more experienced player
(2012 - Lake, Simpkin and Anderson)
(2011 - ----- , Gunston and Hill)
(2010 - Hale, Smith/Puopolo and ----- )
(2009 - Gibson/Burgoyne, Stratton/Suckling and Duryea)
I've left out Woodward, Kelly and anyone else that hasn't cracked it into the team yet

Lewis would be over the moon with that one

If we don't win the flag this year, I can't see it happening in the next 2 - 3.

I think Goo and Ossie should retire at year's end.

Sewell looks like the game is quickly passing him by, Ellis's body never got there.

Hodge, Mitch and Burgers are not getting better with age and have 1 - 3 years left.

Buddy may not be here.

Given that, we need to grab young talent to ensure we are still a chance of winning a flag whilst we have Rough, Lewis, Schoey, Stratts, Suckers, Rioli, Breust, Gunston, Anderson, Birchall, Smith, Savage, Hill, Whitecross...

Cooney doesn't help.

we all forget Woodward. from the little I have seen of him he looks like a ball magnet with good skills in the Sammy mode. can't wait to see if he finally gets the chance to step up!

(the proviso of course being the immediate removal of the # 36 jumper.....)

I can see it happening.

Trade Sewell to GWS for a 2nd round pick swap.
Let Ellis move on.
Acquire Cooney in free agency.

Everyone wins.

- GWS get a strong bodied inside midfielder, to protect their kids and show them how to work hard.
- Sewell gets a guaranteed spot for the next two years, a larger role, more money(COLA + whatever else) and can move straight into coaching(which I think is his ambition).
- Ellis gets a fresh start somewhere else.
- Cooney gets a shot at a flag.
- Bulldogs get either a first rounder(pick 4) or a second rounder(pick 24) dependent on the AFL's wheel of fortune.
- Hawks get a decent pick for someone who looks to be forced out by Hallahan sooner rather than later and a less injury prone player that is versatile like Ellis.

Have to remember that Cooney found his knee treatment on the internet himself, reckon we can manage his knee better than the Bulldogs have. In the end we have upgraded Ellis with a better and less injury prone player, traded off a player on the slide were we have a player ready to take his spot(Hallahan) and recruited a first round sliding midfielder at pick 20-something.

It is a large pick upgrade, GWS might be hesitant, but we did take advantage of them last year.

He has done 2 knees, he's up against it he's missed 2 years. Its mighty hard to come back the same player as you were before the knee. I was quite excited by him.

GWS 2nd round pick will be in the early 20's noone in their right mind is giving that up for Sewelly.

I don't want to trade Sewell or any part of our core players at all unless they ask to leave. Firstly I think he has more footy left in him than people are giving him credit for, and we'll see his benefit in the finals when the contests and fight for possession are much more important than during the regular season. Also, it does more harm than good to trade out senior premiership players in their last years that want to stay, when at the same time we ask players to stay for massive under their market value for loyalty (but then as soon as it appears they start to decline we look to trade them like basketball cards). What would make our players want to sign on for unders for loyalty and mates, if we we are so happy to ship them off when suddenly we see them as a little vulnerable? I'd be annoyed if anyone that has bad words to say about Buddy possibly wanting to leave for a once in a lifetime type offer are the same ones that so flippantly talking of trading out Sewell (or Lewis) outt every year for the last 3-4 seasons.

If we were to trade: On GWS and trading their second rounder. I really don't think GWS care much about young talent and second round picks at the moment. It was signifcant reason they were happy to get Gilham for Anderson. They have an amazing amount of youth already, so I reckon they'd pay overs for (decent) mature depth in their squad. They'd be more after guys like Dal Santo, Cooney, etc thought I would imagine.
