How about this from Jeremy McGovern... The airlines wouldn't allow him to fly home due to a punctured lung & broken rib, so he drove to Adelaide overnight, where his wife met him having flown in from Perth.Together they are now driving across the Nullarbor in a bid to be back in time for a possible Adam Simpson farewell game. McGovern & Simpson remain close and he wouldn't be driving from Melbourne to Perth (4ish days in the car) if not to pay tribute to Simpson

This is why he should have been Captain.

Comes across as laid back but is hands down the hardest campaigner on our list and bleeds blue and gold.

Won 2, lost 3 in the first hub

Won 3, lost 3 in the second hub

So 5-5 overall

And some of the concerns prior to the first hub were justified. Only the WA clubs were asked to hub initially with no definitive return date in what were very uncertain times. And unlike Fremantle, we had several players with young families who were mostly left behind in Perth

Add to it some of the players got massive pay cuts due to COVID

Schofield and Brayshaw have been open about how they were on $40K that year, less than the average wage. They were blocked however from applying for the Job Keeper program by the AFL as it would have put the club over the salary cap.

Basically the players had massive sook (not all of them) that they had to play in Queensland in the hub and complained about it.
Ot was unfair and didn't want to stay away from home for 7 weeks.

Lost every game in the hub iirc.
They weren't given a return date, which was unfair to blokes with young families. Melbourne teams, Richmond for example were told exactly how long they were expected to stay.

Not only that, we were also living in a time when McGowan was shutting borders and we weren't completely clear on what Covid was or what it could mutate to.

"Go stay in QLD to play footy for an indefinite amount of time and leave your families during a pandemic - they may get ill and you won't be there to support them - with a chance the border to WA may be closed to you on return."

All for the sake of a game and people take pot shots at them for "sooking it up".

GTFO

They released fixtures lol.

And they are professional elite sportsmen on hundreds of thousands of dollars a year...suck it up and do what you are getting rich off. Play football when and where we tell you to play it.

They aren't on $23.99 an hour working at IGA ffs. Some of them are on 500 bucks a kick.

no matter how much they get paid, its still only a job.

That isn't true, players took a massive pay cut that year with the lowest on the list earning $40K

This seems to imply that he’s trying to get back in time to play, which isn’t going to happen (1 week away on the injury report). I guess he just wants to be involved with it which is fair.

Would be a little awkward if Simmo doesn’t want to coach a final game this weekend though…

Hi guys sorry for the interuption but does Simmo have to stand down from coaching next season to get the 1million dollars left on his contract or can he go to another club and become senior coach there and still get his money seeing as the club sacked him....
Think so. Unless something is written up that if he gets a gig by next year he forfeits some of the contract.

I couldn't have more respect for McGovern.

Has Simmo coaching the final game been confirmed? If we haven't heard anything yet it seems to me like he doesn't really want to (and I don't think he would want to anyway).

I think Pyke was trying to show how much the club does value and appreciate his legacy but it's truly bizarre how this has played out in the media.

Schofield's talk on it was an eye open - a lot of players were playing for almost nothing - to the point they were eligible for government assistance, but the AFL wouldn't let them claim it.
