Is it too early to call 2018 the worst draft under Adrian Dodoro's time at the club? Mosquito, Ham, Gown, Jok, Dea. Seems like a sizeable hole in the list going forward.
Yes. 2011 really only had Baguley as good and Merrett maybe as an okay pick whilst having a stronger draft hand. Look at the one you're quoting, we had one pick in the top 50.

Keeping in mind we didn't have a first or third round pick, and that Hind was taken earlier than our fourth. Mosquito's ACL hasn't helped matters, he looked capable prior to that, and Ham is good for a late selection.

And yes, as Eth said, it wasn't a great draft in general.

Yes, not a strong draft hand. Would be nice to not have such a gaping hole. Hope that Caldwell gets it together.

Nailing the Snelling mid-season draft selection also helps offset this hall. I think Ham makes it as well.
Yeah, if we're including Snelling then it should be better than 2011 by virtue of draft position

Wins: Baguley/Snelling
Okay: Merrett/Ham
Fails: Kav, O'Brien, Dalgleish, Dell'Olio, Hunter/Mosquito, Gown, Jok

Not including Lee, Long or Dea because they were redrafted. Of those fails I'm most disappointed with Dalgleish. Kid has wheels and a laser kick

I do wonder how many of the fails we've had over the years came down to poor development and/or coaching. We've seen with a number of sides that good coaching can make an average draft selection in to a valuable role player.

2011 is clearly worse given our respective draft hands.

Any good players we get from the 2017 and 2018 drafts are like found money given what speculative picks we had.

2017: Guelfi and BZT
2018: Ham and Mosquito

I like that we’ve added Durham and Caldwell who both are 2018 draft age that can help us not have a whole in our list going forward.

Technically we got Caldwell and Hind from the 2018 draft if that helps.

Hind being 2012 draft age doesn’t make him too relevant imo which does go against what I said about Snelling helping our 2018 draft.

If Caldwell’s injuries hold him back we have a bit of a hole in 2017-2019 draft age players. It’s not a big issue as our 2016 draft of Draper, Ridley and McGrath and our 2020 draft of Reid, Perkins and Cox book end that lean patch.

Currently 2017-2019 draft eligible players on our list are:

2017 - Ham
2018 - Caldwell, Durham, Mosquito
2019 - Jones, Bryan, McBride, Cahill, Hird, Johnson

Wonder if later down the track we try and aim for a free agent from that period.

Interesting to see how Clarke goes. If he unexpectedly makes it, the 2016 draft hand is looking amazing.

I'm most disappointed with Mosquito. If he doesn't do his knee, he's probably playing a lot this year and maybe doesn't have the troubles he did. With his talent, could have been a very astute pick and we really could do with someone of his style right now.

Sliding doors, but maybe no knee injury, maybe he's not a failed pick.

....
Offsetting that though, is that GWS had already plucked 10 kids from the draft the year before (e.g. Shiel). So you really have to push our picks back about 10 spots, which shows the 2011 draft hand was pretty terrible as well (as was most team's not called 'GWS').

And Ambrosia, you're missing Zerk and Guelfi from the 2017 draft hand. Durham was 2019 draft eligible, not 2018.

I was just including players that were they were first eligible for that draft. Ie born in 99 for 2017, 2000 for 2018.

Durham is older than Caldwell according to Wikipedia. Caldwell was pick 11 for the 2018 draft.

Well, according to these he was a 2019 boy and is 9 months younger than Caldwell:

Maybe I've got my Essendon rose coloured glasses on but doesn't look that bad. 2017/18 weak (Ham and Caldwell might still be good players - Durham should make it) but Jones is a bloody good pickup in 2019 and I've got high hopes for Bryan as well. Still time for McBride, Cahill and Hird but I'm most optimistic for Hird of that lot.

The 2016 draft is the draft that underpins our current list really. Pivotal players there that will lead us forward. 2020 is more the excitement and potential draft for the next few years.

I’m confident that your source is better than mine. Footywire and Wikipedia

2015 is looking pretty important. Parish, Francis, Redman and Walla.
Even 2014 with Langford and Laverde. If only McKenna had stayed from that one!

Kiedan Coleman looks like a very handy footballer would have been an excellent selection at pick 37 where we bid on him.

I think tracking our academy/FS bids are good bonus data points to rate our drafting team

Was thinking the same thing watching him as the year has gone on.
