I'm genuinely not sure the club has been all that consistent with what they've asked of him (or any of our list management team).

In 2017 we had to accommodate all the returning players, treating them with kid gloves because the club had totally and utterly failed them.

In 2018 (and 2019) we tried to top up to compete right now with the 2017 offseason bringing on Smith, Saad & Stringer. All at reasonable trade costs, Saad actually resulted in a long-term net upgrade. 2018 brought in Shiel at significant cost.

2020 was signs of failure, which is pretty much when the actual list rebuild started (or was forced upon us).

So we've had total club suspension and trying to retain everyone in to topping up the list in to a back-filling a void of senior players and now a proper draft focused(ish) rebuild all since 2016.

Had Daniher not forced the clubs hand by demanding to be traded (twice) I'm not sure they'd have even accepted they needed to do a rebuild and wouldn't have just tried to keep topping up.

Had the club hierarchy decided after the 2016 suspensions to trade out pretty much anyone with currency and rebuild off the back of the playing group that took the field in 2016 the next 5 or so years would have looked very different.

It's 22 years not 6 and every club has issues/players demanding a trade.

End of the day he has underperformed and taken a pay check for 2 decades so see you later.

Lets cut the bull s**t here. Heppell is staying because Scott wants him to stay. This is not an Adrian call. However is is a direct result of our recruiting. Scott wants him to stay because the leadership level is so low that even a former captain who is past his best offer more leadership than 90% of the list.
Poor kicking, slow, body cooked and unable to defend properly. Don't think his leadership outweighs that.

How many clubs would offer Heppell a contract?

I can already see the press conference in 2-3 years time when scott is sacked, "ultimately scott made list decisions and had a larger say in recruiting and so is responsible for performance, we are confident with two stalwarts and legends of the club in Sheedy and Adrian we will put in place a structure and focus on development that will enable high performance"

Shifting blame from Adrian to other areas never ceases to amaze me with this club and supporter base. It's 22 years at the previously most successful club in a super high performance environment. No one, no one
should have survived two decades of what we have dished up.

standards and expectations of supporters has dropped off more than player standards.

club won't get a cent from me until him and Sheedy are gone.

How many years until Tassie? If dodo still here then Ill be one of the first Tassie members.

Someone who's not me if anyone feels inclined can you tell me over say the past 15 years who we've drafted that in hindsight would be top 5 in their draft?

In hindsight as in the top 5 best players to come out of that draft? e.g. including like a ruckman that turned out to be really good but which no club would use a top 5 pick on? (I can't think of a ruckman but)

Merrett?

I do not agree with the decision but the coach wants him. I did say it was a result of poor recruiting which it is. Recruit better leaders and you do not have to hold onto old beaten up ones.

I got Merrett and Ridley.

Sorta underlines just how bad we are at picking top end talent.

Good list management

A cooked Heppell
A cooked stringer
A cooked Stewart
A cooked Shiel

Couple of undersized key position players whose body will fail when asked to do too much too early because the rest of team is made up of skinny flankers.

But our list management strategy is acceptable.

Forgot Ridley but yeah would have to agree. Hobbs could possibly get there.

We need a Carlton draft like the one they picked Curnow, McKay, Weitwring, Silvagni and Cunningham in to get us back into it.

It doesn't make sense that if Scott didn't want a player offered a new contract that the club would go and do it anyway. If that did actually happen we've got bigger issues than a broken down old warhorse getting another year.

When do you think the ideal time to sack him would be? I think you have experience with this right?
The very moment you realise he is not the right person for the job, but usually you would review your entire team at seasons end just like your players. If you identify you don’t want him moving forward you need to remove him asap and bring in the person you want before key list decisions are made with existing players and trade/draft targets.

If you are worried about IP, this should all be documented and remain property of the employer just like any professional organisation, if your concerned about him using the info against you at another club send him out on gardening leave.

Patrick Ryder and Joe Daniher probably only names that come to mind.. Daniher barely counts because he was father son and even Dodo couldn’t mess that up..

Ironically both players probably played their best footy away from Essendon

Serious question - just heppell left from the 34.

Less serious - we think Hibbert and Melksham sign on end of next year for us and then we are all square with the make up year contracts?

Guess keeping some connection to the drug scandal gives the club some relevance. Let's not move on.

Some list managers are picking 2+ stars in a single draft. We haven't found 2 in 20 years. I won't hold my breath, sadly.

That's a Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge too far

Ruckman thing bothers me
english and darcy are awesome rucks. Redo the 2016 draft and they're top 5 picks imo
