Which of these 5 players from the 2016 draft is Ridley in front of?.

Tom Stewart
Hugh Mccluggage
Tim English
Shia Bolton
Josh Daicos
in the sense of a logical exercise he's better than bolton and luggage. stewart is better but is mature age - he's 30.

i hate dodoro but don't come at ridley. not a good argument.

Wasn't Mark Thompson responsible for Merrett? Basically demanded we pick him on draft night.

Our team doesn't have stars.

When Naitanui retired I thought to myself. Geez there are some young supporters of WC that NN has been the star of the team for almost their entire lives.

Collingwood have had Pendles and SS for years and are still going strong.

Richmond Martin and Riewoldt.

Geelong Selwood and Hawkins and so much more.

Fremantle had Pavlich then Fyfe.

Who the F**K have we had since Lloyd and Hird left?

As good as Merrett is he is not in that same category.
I believe the story goes Dodoro told Bomber Zach might slip and he wanted to draft him if there but he had already promised Lobb he would take him. Bomber told Dodoro to listen to his heart, there's nothing else he could do.

Key defender roles left unsustainable with retirements of Hooker and Hurley.

No big bodied midfielders to balance that area of the ground for five years, after retirement of Watson/Howlett/Hocking

No effective wing replacement for Stanton for five years (Martin/Durham)

Is this correct? Am I missing anything?
No effective key forward since Lloyd.

Yep. I don't pretend to talk with an authority.
Season 9 Idk GIF by The Office

Is it development or picking or both?
It's both. I've been saying this all along, look at the first page of this thread, but we've only done something about 1 half.

Every ruck has been a project pick or a recycled pick up

So, under 22 team just released and no Essendon player represented.

But all good, apparently we're rebuilding.

Mate, it's a fan vote.

Did you vote for Martin and Perkins?

I did, I actually did it more than 8000 times and weirdly, neither are in the side

I know it's a fan vote. Again, a very imperfect metric but it is saying something - particularly when we have one of the biggest fan bases.

Are you suggesting it has no validity whatsoever?
Yes

As with everything, you've got to add a sprinkle of context or else you end up jumping at shadows.

I'm looking at that 22 and it's telling me a couple of different things. We haven't been lucky enough to have free kicks in the form of priority picks, father sons and academy selections and we need to be worse to get picks high enough to access this type of talent.

It also says that even though he's not in the side despite clearly being of exceptional quality, our ability to unearth and develop Nic Martin into a worldie despite not accessing him through traditional means is a dead set miracle, because the only players on there that aren't first round draft picks are Owens, Newcombe and Chad Warner.

No-one is proclaiming it as the metric that we should aspire to excel at. But when you consider it with all the others, then it adds to the appalling picture that has been the last couple of decades.

You can think of excuses all you like, but the fact of the matter is this: first round draft picks tend to be better than other players, hence their overrepresentation. Yes, some of that is likely due to selection bias as well, but not all of it.

Second, if you go back through previous under 22 teams there is a very strong correlation with who is listed on them and who ends up being considered amongst the best players in the competition. No, it is not 100% accurate, but they are telling.

I've gone through and kindly highlighted previous selections as you mentioned and highlighted those that were drafted with selections too high for us to access. Green is zone or other form of priority access.

Couldn't think of a colour to indicate this but Cripps is the pick that was taken from us because Bomber Thompson bought criminals into the club while on ice.

Naughton went at Pick 9 whilst our pick that year would have been 11, so he's another off the list.

Couldn't remember where he fell in relation to what the pick would have been, good pick up
