Now usually i couldn't care less about this type of stuff until reading numerous anti afl posts from NRL fans over the past yr or so. Yesterday at the anzac day game, first we have advertisements on the big screen before the game 'get down to watch storm after the game and get a 20% discount', then im walking through the carpark outta the ground and theres a leaflet on every bloody car in the mcg carpark under the windscreen wiper 'go to the storm game with a 20% discount.'
I found it a bit rich when they change their fixtures to try to effect the new AFL teams and also try copy the AFL's success of the anzac day game that they then go to the step of advertising their sport at the AFL's biggest day ramming leaflets and advertising for their game down peoples throats.

Sorry you didn't say

wasnt at the game, but i assume the in-ground advertising wouldve been a deal with the MCC rather than the AFL......with AFL permission of course.

but as is the case with all advertising, whether you act on it is always your choice.

i really dont think you should be concerned from a competitive view. AFL will be the biggest game in Melbourne and other southern states for years to come. It's part of the fabric of the these places and it wont change overnight (it wont at all).

League and AFL are not enemies. Some people try to portray it that way, but I think there is plenty enough room for 18 AFL teams and however many NRL teams (15 in Aus I think?).

Some people at the yesterday's game may have been looking to do something after and decided that checking out the new AAMI stadium for a Storm game was good option. I would think advertising around the G yesterday was marketing dollars well spent.

Storm got 22,000 to their game, they have been getting around 11,000 most games this year, so yes it worked. I didn't go to the storm game no. Just find it very interesting imagining the outcry if this happened at a sydney NRL game. Double standards.

I'd be surprised that the advertising at the MCG had that much of an impact.

What will have worked in the Storms favour is no other Melbourne team played at all on this day and supporters of non participating AFL teams took themselves off to the game with the extra weekend time.

"the AFL's biggest day" .... hold on Bully. You're not in the GF just yet.

As for your point yes it is a bit rich but frankly who cares? The NRL are no threat at all to us in Victoria. If their little franchise sirvIves then good for them.

I don't mind the NRL if it expands or advertises or whatever.

I do however, hate their stupid filthy bogan supporters. I swear they speak more anti-AFL bullsh*t then they do about their own sport, you can't get any other responses from an NRL fan about AFL than 'omggGGG gAyFL suxxxxxxx'.

They are paranoid about this invasion in the heartland thing, do they see us complaining that Melbourne Storm is invading the home of Aussie rules? No, infact many people I know support the Storm too.

No wonder everyone thinks they are deluded

League and AFL are not enemies.

You haven't been to Sydney then .
The newspapers openly declare it as war .
The NRL shedule games against the AFL .
Ground owners charge much higher rents to the AFL .
The government has hindered AFL developments ...etc etc .
Who was it but the rl controlled SCG that knocked back the IR test on the SCG because it was too close to some rl rubbish .

There was some rl "journalist" on one HD actually complaining about Sheedy because he had the audacity to stand up for GWS .

The telgraph certainly does but then it's a woeful newspaper who no one takes seriously. The SMH is reasonably balanced bar the odd article, certainly gives plenty of space to AFL.

No, Channel Nein and Fox schedule the games. Who gives a shit if they are in the same timeslots as AFL games? Rugby League does not have to change its broadcast schedule to accomodate AFL (and it'snot like the AFL would do the same for RL in say Melbourne or potentially Perth).

Do they? ANZ seems to pay every team to play games out of there, and league plays maybe 2-3 games out of the SCG per year, which are usually already part of the Roosters or Tigers ground deal (using SCG instead of SFS). SCG trust is generally most concerned with cricket, anyway.

Have they? Last i checked they were giving significant contribution to the refurbished Sydney showground (despite the fact ANZ next dor was adjusted to cope with AFL games at the detriment of three other codes), meaning there will be 3 AFL grounds for two teams in Sydney. They also provided a signifcant amount to the Blacktown facility for GWS. Meanwhile grounds like Brookvale barely receive a cent despite desperate need for investment.

RL controlled SCG? Yeah, whatever. When did this actually occur?

And rugby league fans are painted as paranoid

Good on the storm, about time they did some decent marketing work, hopefully this continues. Surely the almighty AFL is able to hack a little bit of competition? Not as if we are expecting to have anywhere ear AFL levels of popularity in Melbourne, simply trying to get the message out that there is an alternative, come along and watch. You might even enjoy yourselves! Much like the Swans and GWS in Sydney/NSW

The game was against the NZ Warriors who have a fair following from expats in Melbourne. Apparently that was the main reason for the bigger crowd. A similar thing happened last year for this game.

What's wrong with that? Would have made for a great sport afternoon and evening if people went to both.

Buddy, you don't understand, you gotta realise that Collingwood and Essendon own ANZAC day. They created it. World War 1 was all about Collingwood V Essendon, had nothing to do with Arch Duke Ferdinands assasination or the like. Its all about Collingwood and Essendon and to suggest otherwise is downright un-Australian.

Not quite right. Last years game was the first after the Storm had their titles stripped off them. The general consensus was that it was a show of support for the team.

Playing the game on ANZAC day night after the Bombers v Pies game was a master stroke by the NRL and that's something you can rarely say about them when it comes to the game down here in Melbourne.

It was fantastic to see people enjoy a great day/night.

So you are saying the extra 11k that showed up (above the normal Storm crowd) were all Pies and Bombers fans?

Please, do tell......

The NRL is advertised at AFL matches in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, up in Sydney...

Invasion of the Sherrin

Each time I travel down the Princes Highway, the Victorian border resembles the advancing battleline of an insidious army. If it feels like an invasion, that's because it is one.

The difference in attitude between the two cities is amazing.

I was actually going to go to the Storm game with my GF as I couldn't get to the AFL game..
But as others have pointed out, the AFL and Rugby codes aren't at war. People in the media try to encourage the idea that there is one though, but seriously it would benefit all codes if the organisers or respective teams worked together..
People can enjoy both sports, and there are enough people in Melb to support all AFL and League clubs here, and enough to support all League clubs plus the Swans and Giants..

LOL. More of this please. :thumbsu::D:thumbsu:

The old timber pubs have tipping competitions, but the bar flies argue about Bombers and Blues instead of Raiders and Rabbitohs. On weekends, their televisions show both codes but the audio ditched Ray Warren for Bruce McAvaney sometime ago.

Locals say a generational influx of Victorian sun-seekers is responsible for Port Douglas becoming an Aussie Rules oasis. They say the southerners arrived with the zeal of evangelical missionaries, spreading Sherrins like the good book and converting the mungo heathens into true believers from the crib.

When I see 90,000 people flocking to the MCG for yesterday's premiership game, it's impossible not to admire the fervour of AFL fans. Their sport is truly their religion and their lifestyle. Like immigrants holding fast to traditions from the motherland, they refuse to accept the sporting custom of their new homes in either NSW or Queensland.

But rather than clamour in enclaves, these expats boldly speak in strange tongues about shirtfronts and melees. They actively pester councils to pour more money into oval-shaped fields. They bombard bars in droves and demand the best screens show AFL. They set up grass-roots competitions and erect large streetside banners that implore people to join.

From what I have experienced AFL fans generally don't even think about RL. It's just irrelevant and will never compete with a far superior spectacle. Where as RL fans seem to hate AFL with a passion and do everything they can to abuse the game and its fans. Of course there are exceptions.

good, its about time the nrl haters and the afl the haters from opposing codes got over it and went to a game and learn to appreciate each sport for what it is, i love both, i can understand some dont, but if you give it a chance i bet many of you that say you wont like it will end up very interested.
