Interesting how the blocking rule is applied in a marking contest when a forward is prevented from leaping at a marking contest, but doesn't apply so much when a forward is near the goals shepherding the defender away from getting a hand on a ball.

Not an oberservation on the umpiring in this game - although in the 3rd quarter I saw the example of a free kick paid against Hodge to Brown in front of goal, and then a few minutes later Higgins kicked a long goal where there defender was blocked from trying to jump at the ball.

Could be that the umpires are trained to look for free kick against forwards.
