STATE OF PLAY:
  • The game is out for Steam and PlayStation. There have been issues with Xbox release and it is unclear when the game will be available.
  • Big Ant are aware that there are playability issues & bugs at present.
  • Content has been temporarily removed from the game to identify where the issues lie.
  • This content will be re-introduced via patches in the coming days.
  • Big Ant have released a summary of what is to be reintroduced, which can be seen below.

Can we handpass accurately now?
Yes

Patch notes from my experience so far:

Positives:
  • handballs work and are now viable to use
  • opposition actually tries to tackle you
  • fewer bugs
  • more congested footy

Needs fixing still:
  • interchange still isn’t avaliable to be automated
  • stats still aren’t here at the breaks
  • marking is still way too easy
  • the AI still haven’t learnt you’re allowed to spoil the ball
  • goal kicking from set shots and running is still too easy, guaranteed goals when the ball is inside 50
  • the AI don’t miss shots either
  • The AI also doesn’t sprint for some reason

Thoughts after the first game post patch

-Rucking 10x better

-The number of times I got caught with incorrect disposal from a player tackling one of mine taking a kick was kinda ridiculous, probably because I wasn't doing enough handballs/clearance kicks though

-The little pause you do after getting the ball on the run is annoying and can mess with your flow, it does the same thing if you mark it in the open and want to play on but still ok

-AI is a lot smarter now, and will run at you and not just stare, it's also harder to play against, went from 80-12 on hard to 37-30 on hard

So it’s essentially a bee’s dick better than launch since gameplay is a little better, but no content insight? Might hold on a refund for now.

My thoughts are below. Caveat is I've only played 1 half on hard so far but wanted to capture my immediate thoughts. Will add to this as I go.

My take;

  • Honestly genuinely think this will end up really good. Lots to work with and the issues now feel more like glitches than bad programming. I think it's going to be salvaged. Note this applies to gameplay specifically, not sure on the extent of issues in the other game modes.
The good:
  • Playing on hard as Richmond vs Melbourne, one thing I love is that when Melbourne go to the 50 it's often to a 1v2 as one of my players has come up to be 3rd in. I can see how this may be exploited or fail in certain cases, but so far it has worked well and felt realistic.
  • I'm losing by 3 goals, opposition tackling bug has been fixed so it isn't too easy. Honestly a challenging game is so important to me, so hopefully this is sustained.
  • Ability to string possessions together has been easy enough, via kicks. More on handballs in the bad.
  • Contest play I've really enjoyed. Can squeeze out a handball most of the time if you want to when tackled but not been able to direct it, which is good. Can also hold it in if you prefer.
  • Spoiling has felt really good, win the contest when you should but lose when out of position. Ball can go a long way from a spoil too which is realistic.

The bad:
  • Goal kicking seemingly too easy, for both teams.
  • Handballing still broken. Can aim okay but my player stops and won't sprint for a couple of seconds most times after receiving a handball.
  • Marking as others have said, feels like it's too easy. Kind of feels like it magnets onto players for my team, and I outmarket the opposition in most cases through no skill of mine.
  • Tackling is broken. Very rarely able to land a tackle - possible there's a skill component I'm missing which will become evident over time, but does feel too hard.
  • Sprinting generally feels broken. Doesn't always work, bit of a lag when inputting and also when releasing the button, but inconsistent.
  • Change player button is glitchy and doesn't work as it should - this should be patched ASAP as is gamebreaking.

I like that part re the holding the ball when kicking. It's realistic - if you take a couple of steps and attempt to kick and get tackled in real AFL, it's holding the ball. I actually had one that trickled off my boot and was play on which was a nice touch.

Like you said, handball or clearance kick in congestion should be required, I think it's a good thing if they are.
 
Just an idea guys, if we see any glitches or things missing in the game, maybe we can list them respectful and let Ross know. I don't think rushing in here crapping on the game is going to help fix any issues.... You may get some cheap likes though

Great idea.. Instead of shitting on the game post all your cons (and pros) so they can see what needs to be fixed rather than just saying how bad it is but not giving detail. It’s the only way the game can continue to be improved, so it’s probably actually a good thing the devs are in the forums reading. They can get first hand info on what needs fixing and what is working. Can only be a positive surely?

-Add the Ability to turn off Contest Assisted Movement (it feels restricting)
-Interchange needs to be fixed
-stats i feel is a given to be added at the end of each quarter and in depth stats at the end of the game
-Maybe make the player who is on the move to the marking square more likely to ether mark or punch the ball rather then the one standing still.
