Yeah, it was something else when the producer got really hostile along with his defenders over a common sense observation about where resources should go. Like obviously you wouldn't get the artists to program, you'd move them off the project and hire more programmers so the game can actually function properly. Although, their engine is probably time/money wasting from what I read about how the developer's spend time creating tools for it.
The amount of time they would have to use to get things to actually work would be ridiculous.

Huge companies have their own engines but a relatively small company having the ego to try to do it all themselves is laughable, no wonder the product they end up with is more often than not rubbish.

Just noticed Big Ant used PhyreEngine for AFL Live 2011, maybe explains some things too.

Then again, the IR Gurus games used their own engine by the looks of it.

Ok, Now we find out that the game we actually liked was on a different engine that was licensed and not made in-house... This shitshow just keeps getting better and better... I'm wishing we knew all this stuff going into this game... Having this stuff getting out there would have been hard anyway... The more and more we find out about the inner-workings of Big Ant and what they tried to sell us and what is the actual truth is startling.

Hell, Someone needs to get into contact with someone who worked with Tru Blu and find out how much over the budget Big Ant went with AFL Live 2011 and if there were any other reasons they were dropped in the first place. Because I'm starting to think that there was a good reason they got dropped. Especially after what AFL 23 has been...

Hell, I want to know what was in that Day 1 Patch that "broke everything". I have a feeling it must have been the whole game with how little we got in the first version and how broken things still are.

Who know where we even go from here, With the news of NASCAR getting sick of Motorsports Games and opening up their license because of how bad their game makes them look, It gives me the faint hope that maybe the AFL might do the same here as they can't be happy with this at all IMO. This game makes them look worse than any of the other games that they've put their name on. Even the really crap ones. At least those functioned properly and didn't promote things that weren't in the game.

I'm pretty certain they used Renderware for at least the first 3 of their games (2003, 2004 and Premiership Edition)

Ah, yep it was Renderware.

Nothing was. Thats the hilarious part, its all a BS excuse for the game not being ready on time. Its easy to observe they’ve been making it up as they go and if anyone connects the dots, lots of things have shown up post-patches that were never shown in any earlier footage eg stats overlays, goal run meters, tactics. These all popped up after the fact and its clear all the rapid testing they’re doing now for patches would indicate they have no clue what to look for as things are added in. Shocked the handballing isnt as premium as their ability to handball accountability or responsibility is.

The game could probably end up being great, the problem is that the state it's in is a beta phase that would take years of testing. This is what most developers are doing now with their games. Unfortunately for sports game as they are yearly this isn't usually possible and these guys don't have the framework of EA and 2K.

Looking at Madden even - the Americans hate on that franchise so much, but it is seriously good when it comes to a football game, at that point though - the expectations for games even grow so it cops a heap of flak. That's with years and years and years of framework. Big Ant would be better off working on this current game for awhile to get it right in order for the next one to be better.

Biggest concern atm is that we just waited over a month for a 213mb update that fixed turning circles and stuck in the mud to a degree.
If we had to wait a month just for that, I’d say this game is just about cooked. Will not get to the level we all wanted/expected and I’d just hope that AFL 25 isn’t a bigger flop

Yep exactly right. Either the game or engine is so broken that fixing things is borderline impossible without breaking other things.

Or more likely there are only a couple of devs on it and that's why it's so slow to fix anything.

Pretty telling that cricket and rugby both near certain to be delayed, cricket already delayed once. And every chance they release in a broken state. Meanwhile the NACON share price continues to plummet....

I’ve noticed people on the Rugby forums are perplexed they haven’t had any communication and were expecting some info come out of Gamescon and nothing. The game is scheduled for the 7th.

It’s very disappointing for those still trying to play the game on PS and disappointing or should say fortunate for those with Xbox’s that ended up missing out on the game.

Just pack up shop now and save it for Feb next year they will be better off for it and the users will be better off for it.
As each day passes the lists get more outdated. There is one week left of footy for 8 teams it just does not make any sense what so ever for it to “released” again after that.

The only people you would keep happy is a small handful of people that would attempt to play the game in finals and the odd live streamer but even that has been a let down of how poor a condition the game is in.

The only streams they can do is basically an exhibition as the management mode is to bare bones and riddled with errors that they can’t even do a management style career type stream that’s worth following.

I agree. Seriously, This game should never have been released at all. If they weren't going to take the time to test and do it properly, They should never have worked on it at all. I feel sorry for the poor sods who think they're getting Cricket 24, Rugby 24 or Tiebreak anytime soon.

In fact, I think Big Ant will be lucky if they ever get another game out the door at this rate with how little they're talking... Not a good sign for their future prospects I must say. In fact, It comes off like the communication of a dying company.

I know I keep comparing this to Motorsports Games and their NASCAR debacle but I'm seeing a lot of parallels between AFL 23 and NASCAR 21 Ignition in terms of how hyped it was, how bad it came out, how it seems like the people behind it can't even fix the game and how they had a bajillion other games in the works that kept getting delayed but never came out and never had any major info announced besides the fact they were working on it...

With how that has gone and how most people are predicting that Motorsports Games won't see out the year, If I was working at Big Ant, I'd maybe get the resumes ready as the entire AFL 23 journey feels like a beat for beat repeat of that.

I mean we can’t knock their marketing campaign for Pro Team can we? ‘Here everyone! A mode filled with AFL legends and champions!’ ‘Oh when will we get that?’ ‘………….’

Its not impossible that a court battle decides the future of the company in all honesty, it would be a pretty big financial penalty to breach contracts with retailers and Microsoft and would explain their radio silence on everything.

Theres no way the AFL project could have been profitable, their broken Rugby and Tennis games would have run at a loss aswell, company can only have so many busts before they dont exist anymore.

I could be wrong but I’m sure Ross did say in here months back that AFL 23 would be operating at a loss. He also said it was their ‘passion project’ since its gone how it did, I wonder if it would’ve been way better had it been a legit, commissioned job then 🤔

I don’t see how any dev working on this game would have any passion left.

If that's the case then, It makes you wonder if it's actually feasible to even create an Aussie Rules video game to a level that most people would want in the first place.

Hell, Why would they want to take on something that would lose them loads of money when they're a small company that could be sunk by a game going horribly wrong? Honestly, Something isn't adding up here...

I'm starting to think that either A. There are a few dev studios in Australia interested in doing an AFL game but not to the vision of what Big Ant wanted to do and were offering less money to create it or B. Our market is so small that it can't sustain a game and Ross thought with his heart and not with his head when pushing for the license... (Which is something he has shown to do many times.)

I'm hoping it was the former because at least that means we'd have someone to take over after this trainwreck even if the game isn't anywhere close to AAA sports games that people are used to in terms of graphics and detail.

Don't believe I've seen this properly before, pressuring the ball carrier to make an error and kick it out on the full

Jai Newcombe kicking a set shot outside the 50m line (have done it a few times previously... but he's a far better kick on the run outside 50 compared to a set shot from the same distance).

Game still awful? I figured I'd check in periodically.

Far from awful! I mean, Nickelback is awful.
there’s not a lot of bugs now and it has a lot going for it from future big updates.

But it needs a good few months of testing and fine tuning to give it a quality touch, I feel.

The issues I have are.

  • play seems to speed up out of nowhere as you kick the ball forward, the ball suddenly projects at 100km/h
  • handballing and kicking direction needs a good testing phase to iron out jagged movement.
  • tackling can be too fast, or reactive, a little time to get your bearings with the ball would be cool
  • gameplay needs a proper testing run.

Gameplay is okay. If you're fiending a game of AFL you probably won't throw the controller.

But still nothing to keep you coming back. Online still has critical issues apparently and management mode hasn't been touched. Still no pro teams either.
