I'll defend when I think things are a little unbalanced, which I believe they are. BA would still be here if it wasn't reddit on crack, entire pages of repetitive vitriol (which to your credit was no small job cleaning up). The place is the poorer for their exit imo.
You mean honest observations they couldn't defend except with passive aggressive comments, using personal things, like using a job interview from 12 years ago against one of their customers and so they left to their own forum where they could control things like censoring and ignore their consumers who had genuine questions and concerns? I've never seen a company act so disgusting towards their customers. Usually developers/publishers are apologetic and offer refunds for a botched game.

'Deepest AFL game' - I conceed a strong case however part of this is also drinking the kool aid. How many games are 'deepest / biggest / best ever' during developmet? How often do you get excited and believe every word? I'd hazard a guess almost never. So a part of this is emotional investment which isn't on BA.
Majority of the excitement was based on Ross' comments on this forum and interviews with streamers. He bagged Evo 2 and even at stages stated this AFL 23 game would walk all over EVO 2. When you've got the boss of the company talking it up and then it releases as a steaming pile then you have a right to state promises were not kept and be disappointed.

If you're only looking at gameplay then fair enough, although IMO it still isn't anywhere near 100%. But gameplay isn't what keeps the majority of people playing. I've read a lot of comments on here and other forums stating that you play a game or a season and win but there's nothing to keep them coming back. Management mode has no depth. Sure you can trade and draft etc. but it still needs depth e.g. training, injury reports, suspensions etc. Management mode or player career is what keeps people playing as it makes it interesting and things can change from year to year.

If you're happy to accept mediocrity and enjoy it then that's fine, enjoy but as a consumer I will never accept and should never be expected to accept a product that is less than what it was advertised as.

Similar.

Ross became frustrated, I'm sure there's some things he would have done differently. I'm not here to change views or make everyone feel differently about it. But to refer to a specific examples when this place was cranking out 100 pages of guff a day is incredibly reductive.

As I said in a post many moons ago, the disenfranchised posters 'won', be happy. And the place is the poorer for it, anyone who thinks otherwise probably wasn't around for the Live 11 days. That level of interaction is probably gone for good I suspect.

I played Live 2011 endlessly without modes, but the game at least functioned enough, whereas with 23 it's just fundamentally broken.

Nobody "won" other than the producer ripping off his customers and then adding insult to injury. He had been very rude and passive aggressive for years, not just with 23. Obviously people tolerated or even went along with it because he produced the best AFL game in 2011, but then he botched this game, so there was little reason to be silent about the issues.

And a lot of the same posts were happening because they weren't responding and ignoring the urgent issues that needed to be addressed. That's why he moved over to his own forum to control the narrative and silence anyone with genuine concerns and questions. I don't get the, "Why couldn't you people just be quiet about the problems? We could have kept the producer here to ignore the massive issues." You can always go onto their forums with the producer. This thread I feel is more honest about the situation than over there.

Different times my friend.
Ross’ ego back then wasn’t an issue. I was here for the Live 11 discussions and I even had personal messages exchanged with him at the time.
Money/power has gotten to his head unfortunately.
The discussions this time around, even from the get go before all the cracks started to appear were nowhere near the level of interaction as back then.
We knew next to nothing about AFL23 before it was released. Can’t say the same about AFL 2011

It's confusing why 23 had a worse production since the developer had much more control this time around compared to Live 2011.

Hmm oh I dunno, probably the XBOX version and pro team as a start. We can work on the hundreds of issues within the actual gameplay later.

The defense of BA at this point is a crack up 😂 love it
I was pro-BA. Even after launch. I could buy the story that someone uploaded the wrong build and that was going to be a pain in the ass to fix. Mistakes happen and it was just stupid enough to be believeable. But the game should have been in a proper launch state in a month and it still isn't.

The best part for me, is the feature I wanted the most (player career mode) was cut for time for a mode that isn't even in the game yet (Pro Team).

I want a good AFL game as much as the next person and would have been happy to buy a crappy product at launch to make sure we got AFL25 but now? I'd be hesitant

In terms of what's changed, I think the gameplay on Steam is edging past ok into being pretty fun. That's all I'm saying. I like being as critical as the next person but I'm more guided by the low base we're building off. Not whatever Ross said 12 months ago after a couple of wines, but the thirty years of rubbish to average games that have been released. Against those 23 is already stacking up in several areas areas and after the extra features are added what else are we complaining about without it being an AFL 25 conversation? Reiterate I'm going to be comparing gameplay to past games, not pre-release banter and the game we all had in our heads.
I'm a mod but we don't have access to mod all boards. I only mod the Saints and Combat Sports boards. I really don't envy the job of the mods who have the responsibility to look over this board and this thread. It's non-stop complaining but you know what? It's warranted. People are pissed off and they damn well have the right to be. We all paid good money for this game, more money than much of the better games going around, and we got given absolute garbage.

I have absolutely no sympathy for BA or anyone associated with them. They lied through their teeth to their consumers and then when challenged about it they were condescending, tried to silence genuine criticism of the game, and even aired someones private life (hurrdurr we dodged a bullet not hiring you lel).

It's ****ing pathetic from any developer let alone one that actually needs a consumer base to get behind them to continue turning a profit. Their behaviour has actually been disgusting and I hope they never recover from it.

Yeah this. Spot on

Ross put himself on a forum and in a position to not only receive the kudos but also receive the negative reactions to a broken game. What does he expect is going to happen?

Since BA left this thread, it’s essentially become a little echo chamber for the complainers.

After the latest patch, I don’t see what there is to complain about unless your an Xbox player, it’s one thing to express your opinion on what you’d like to see changed/added but the claims of the game being nowhere near its base or that “the whole thing has been a scam” are just ridiculous.

Yet a majority of people feel the game is no where near where it should be and a minority don't.

Because the game is in such bad condition, you're going to see views from people that reflect that a lot.

I think the biggest telling point about this game over anything is the date stamp and timeline.

Launch night event was late March or early April with a Gather Round release date.... The home and away season is now complete and finals about to hit us and we have no pro team, no xbox and management mode is bare bones with no depth. They have had an entire football season come and gone and they haven't delivered on the game. No wonder people are pissed off, sure there is a very select fanbase that seem to be very pro BA but there is no way to sugar coat it other than they failed.

Looks like they are going to fail to deliver to their rugby fans and who knows with cricket again which is a shame.

Retailers don't have the Xbox version now and aren't they meant to have it a week prior so if you go on that theory the people dreaming of a finals launch of xbox and pro team will be let down.

Next week sees 2 really big games come out in Starfield and NBA2K even if AFL was to come out on Xbox or pro team launch good luck with that and followed up by Mortal Kombat the week after and EA FC24 after that, not a good month to be "re-releasing" a game that was due in April...

This thread I feel is more honest about the situation than over there.

110% facts and like you said, its because over there they control the narrative. Its the same level of ignoring questions as it was here. I’m genuinely curious how many posters either here or over there would change their stance if Ross specifically came out with a genuine apology to his consumers and owed up for the games sh*t storm release and follow up debacle? NBA 2K is out in 10 days and for me, that means AFL 23 will be far (further) in my gaming rearview.

The game isn’t in bad condition at all, what’s there is great and genuinely fun to play especially after the latest patch.

There’s a tonne that I’d love to see added to the gameplay and game modes but it’s a great foundation now to build from.

If this was NBA or FIFA for example people would be roasting it for how bare it is and I don’t think those fan bases would have been as patient with release dates and non communication about delayed dates. I mean they still have not said a single word about not delivering the late July/ August Xbox and Pro Team release.

The damage is done, yep sure there’s a few hardcore supporters but the general consumer would be burned from these guys and have no faith in future products.

The players don't move at times they freeze for no reason, the ball teleports still, players somehow use the force from Star Wars to obtain the ball, you can't counter interceptions like you can with sliders or lob hand passing in Evo 2, you can't rotate on your mark line like you can in Live 2011, the physics are all over the place, like the rocket ship balls that go through the goals. It really is a mess and an unfinished product.

And that's ignoring all the missing modes and features that were suppose to be in the game.

You’re playing a very different game to me mate, I agree that lob handballs are needed but most of what you mentioned hasn’t been a problem in a long time.

Comparing this to NBA or FIFA is ridiculous, the budget and studio size is nothing in comparison and the fanbases of those games are toxic and full of complainers anyway.

The general consumer has moved on, when BA come out with AFL 25 (or even the 2024 season pack) they’ll all be back regardless of what they thought of AFL 23
