WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

Radio or something playing over the menus as I'm continuing on to next week is fine.

I'd watch the "TV show" once then skip it every single though. Just like I'll be doing for team walk outs, coaches addresses and whatever other repetitive cut scenes will be in this game.

Interesting one with the ratings, people say it’ll get tweaked, but the players and team overalls need more then a tweak, I wouldn’t expect drastic changes. Should’ve got the great man Fages to do them for the game, would’ve done them for free 🤣

It would be an honour

And that’s fine, and I probably would too if I was just playing a quick play match, but during a manager or career mode, I’d be keen to have things like a TV show or talk back radio in the background just to up the immersion

Also, did anyone else notice players have archetypes now? Tom Mitchell was classed as an accumulator. Would be strange if this was included and not used in a career mode setting

Ratings are becoming a tiresome discussion in here but having an ultimate team mode where you’re paying for packs/players means the ratings, and their relative impact on gameplay, are pretty damn important to get right.

Something an AFL game has never been close to achieving.

Hey Ross, not sure on the plans for rolling out more info. Possibly an idea for next iteration, doing info drops on certain aspects on regular basis and calling them round 1, 2 so on. Relatively cheap marketing (I know nothing about business feel free to tell me I’m wrong). Keeps the hype building and gives us wolves something to chew on

For example this year could’ve been:

  • top 5 players in Mid, Fwd, def.
  • New tactics available
  • The attributes screen
  • Mention of the different set shot animations we saw, pretty cool by the way.
  • Heritage/ bonus guernseys available for teams
  • maybe finally culminating in announcement of the secret implied mode as the last announcement if you can get all the details ironed out

Will there be much of a difference between current gen/last gen editions of the game?
Don’t know if it’s been asked anyone feel free to answer

From the SEN article:

TEAM RATINGS
Collingwood (87)
Brisbane, Geelong, GWS, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Sydney (86)
Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast, Melbourne, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs (85)
Adelaide, Fremantle, North Melbourne, West Coast (84)
Hawthorn (83)

Who would you put where?

For me

87- Geelong (winning that flag in that fashion surely earns you top ranking)
86- Sydney, Brisbane, Collingwood, Melbourne
85- Richmond, Bulldogs, Fremantle, Port, Carlton
84- Gold Coast, Adelaide, Essendon, St kilda, GWS
83- West coast, Hawthorn, North Melbourne,
I don't think it's that far fetched.

Pure speculation here but if based off Ross' player overall posts on the last page being from October 2022 which is what they are going off, the version we played on the dev kits last night in theory is prior to that point in time as the ratings were different.

so potentially it was a 5 month prior version.

that is a long time between drinks as they say!
The 2023 guernseys were up to date though

Decided to play NBA Live 18 (yes Ross you should sue for that name) for the first time in a while the other night and the presentation through the management mode is absolutely class. Worth looking it up if you haven’t seen it.

I recall a very old basketball game, potentially a college game, having a show you could watch at the end of every week, recapping the round with scores and highlights from simulated games. Too late to add to development but should definitely look into it in the future, made the game feel unbelievably immersive.

That would have been an ESPN game, NFL 2K5 did the same thing.

(And evo 2 don't shoot me.)
Not with that consistently choppy and weightless motion capture/animation, and bad AI. Big Ant will patch the errors up with their AI, unlike Wicked Witch, who told people to "use the sliders" to excuse their bad AI and the motion capture. Wicked Witch somehow broke and made the motion capture choppy, using Big Ant's from 2010.

Think it would just be there for management mode no?
Could be interesting to see if they use the archetypes at all in management modes. Will having too many of the same types be bad? Do you need to put together the right archetypes to match your team style? Or are you okay running clashing styles if it means having your best 22 on the park? Would make the whole mode wayyyyyy deeper

Also, did anyone else notice players have archetypes now? Tom Mitchell was classed as an accumulator. Would be strange if this was included and not used in a career mode setting

I’m stoked there’s archetypes! It was a wishlist item for me. Lucky Tom Mitchell’s in game model somehow accumulated a lot more hair then the poor bloke really has 🤣

Where have you seen this information? I have seen the whole event and it’s not included anywhere.
Please elaborate?
Twistie3's twitch stream showed a glimpse of an interview he had with Ross where Ross confirmed a team career mode and an individual career mode.

The interview will hopefully come out in the next couple of days.

The AFL reddit is the worst reddit sub in existence. They couldn’t give a s**t about the sport. It’s an echo chamber for vague social issues that don’t really have anything to do with AFL. Everyone there would rather discuss sports betting, pride rounds, Israeli flags or how they think the commentary is s**t than actually talk or discuss anything actually related to the sport. I hate that place
I logged in for the first time in years to like this comment. They also love pretending as if they are really 'ocka' Aussies, but it just comes across as fake and weird. Reddit sucks lol

I'm going live on twitch at approx 9pm tonight to do a Q&A on AFL23 as I know there was heaps of questions I didn't get to last night during the stream.

So if you want to chat more about the game, the night, and the developments of today feel free to stop by and get involved!

This might have been said elsewhere. But has Ross/big ant confirmed that stats for players and teams will update and evolve over the season?

has there been much info on what this management mode is? like is it anything on the level of even Motorsport Manager or is it just some surface level coaching stuff or something like that
