WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

'Season' and 'Management mode' as separate game modes?
Hall of fame???

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN

I know I'm in the minority here but I'd love a cut down season mode where all I do is play games, then list management at the end of the year. I have no interest in training, budgets, hiring coaches, all that other guff. Just let me win the flag and then make some ridiculous trades.

I never felt that game to game management was all that much work in any AFL game. Outside of training players (which I just hit auto-train every time) and adjusting team lineup for injuries/suspensions (which can also be done automatically), I can't even think of anything else you needed to do between games.

This.
It would be great if it was similar to 2K in terms of the fact that you can turn certain management options off
Start the season, play the games and then worry about the management side of things in the off-season would be ideal

Played Evo 2 for shits and giggles, Sydney vs Geelong Grand Final preview.

First thing I noticed was Buddy in the ruck. OK.

Apart from it being a nightmare to work out who has the ball in a contested situation, so your best bet is to mash Y (or triangle I guess) to either lay a tackle or take advantage of the throw it on the boot option, it shits me to tears how slow it is after you take a mark. Like I take a mark, I see a free player upfield, and I can't do anything until my player takes an age to get back to take the kick, because otherwise the ball is smothered. So my snail gets into position and ... there are no free players any more because no one on the field is as slow as the idiot with the ball.

And don't get me started on the mark animations you have to sit through.

Ugh.

You just never feel like you're fully in control.

Please fix this.

The player animations look fantastic, really impressed with what they’ve done. Also really impressive they’ve taken the time to make a unique set shot arch for Buddy, the attention to detail is super promising, and something we haven’t seen in a while.
To be honest though, I’m not sure if I’m a fan of the set shot mechanics, especially the crosshair. I much prefer the simplicity of the AFL Live 2011 set shot mechanics, it just felt more free flowing. I think the whole timing thing is a bit too “arcadey” and overkill, it was something I really disliked about all the Wicked Witch games. I really hope this isn’t incorporated into the gameplay when the ball is in play, I feel it really ruins the flow of the game, which is why I think AFL Live 2011 worked so well, and why so many people love that game, is because despite the poor graphics, commentary and features, the gameplay just flowed well. The Wicked Witch games incorporated too much timed mechanics and I feel the flow of the game was tarnished. I hope Big Ant can see this and will improve on it before the release. I have a lot of faith in the team and don’t for a second think they don’t know what they’re doing, they’re definitely the best fit for this job which is why we’re all so excited. Overall, can’t wait to see it!

Bit of better footage from the demo booth. I'm genuinely getting excited with how smooth and high quality it looks

I’m already loving everything about this, the graphics, the realistic animations (is this the difference between mocap and no mocap), the grand final logo on the guernseys and even the menu design is so sleek and modern.

Personally, I’m glad they’ve improved the set shot mechanics from Live 1, I loved those mechanics at first but it quickly became way too easy to just adjust for the natural arc

Looks promising. However we expect the stars like buddy and danger to look good. Show me wat a Callum Dawson or a Charlie Lazzaro look like.

Yeah, I am a bit concerned that Buddy will have a unique run up, maybe they'll bring back JK's twinkle toes if it's based on 2022 lists, but everyone else will be generic.
Hope for gods sake they don’t bring in Ben Brown’s long run up, might take all bloody quarter for him to take his shot :p

I like it how the exact same thing plays twice, so the trailer is actually half the length shown.

Animations do look really good. Keen to see if in-game is the same.

This is a video made for the MCG precinct - it is not the same thing played twice... one is Danger kicking a goal, one is Buddy, as is playable for the next two days on the stand.

All footage is in game, in engine.

No shop for micro transactions? No battle pass? Not interested.
To be honest, I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea of a small independent company like Big Ant incorporating micro-transactions, especially if it meant we got an Ultimate Team mode. The funds would only help the company and future games grow.
