WHEN CAN I PLAY? READ BELOW:
  • PlayStation (Physical): Thursday 4 May
  • PlayStation (Digital): 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May
  • Steam: Currently 8:01am AEST Thursday 4 May, may be moved to 12:01am AEST
  • Xbox (Digital or Physical): TO BE CONFIRMED, unlikely to be 4 May

Those that pre-ordered PS versions will be able to play on Thursday, disks will have already been mailed by retailers, they will also be available in-store.

Steam will also be available Thursday.

Stating the obvious, we are still having issues with XBox.

Seriously, anyone that looks hard knows there’s issues - why do you think there are so many exclusives for a particular platform that are not marked as exclusive, but are only on that platform.

If I took that road, life would have been a lot easier.

Xbox digital and retail will release at the same time - that is not a decision we get to make.

It applies now and I will no doubt pay a price.

Re: commentary team
Hamish is still there, Daisy didn't make it into the final version of the game.

We added Gary and increased the workload of Harf.

Re: game availability/release dates
I can never give 100% guarantee about anything in the future, but as it stands today, the statement I am prepared to make it that all stock that is at retailers on 4 May will be available for sale.

As to the amount that will be there for sale, and whether it is enough, that is a question I cannot answer.

It will be made digitally available on the various platform holder electronic stores.

Clarifying, the game will not release prior to 4 May 2023.

I am vague as there is one platform that has had sufficient stock at retailers and the other has not, and I cannot name them (contractual reasons).

The game will not be further delayed because of the numbers of units in stock.

Re: Steam listing
I've already put in a request for the screenshots to be replaced with current ones, they'll probably only be there for a day.

As much as the feedback has generally been positive, these are old, meant to be placeholder only and were not meant to go live.

Re: playing lists
All playing lists are accurate for the 2023 season.

Re: content creator footage
This is all prior to day one patch (as some have noted updates like numbers etc are apparent)

Re: Career mode
A head's up on Career mode.

At the AFL 23 Launch night I mentioned the non-team based Individual Career Mode in an interview with Dean (Twistie3). As alluded to at that same event, we were working with the AFL and AFLPA to include as many past legends in the game as possible.

The great news is that we have received approval for far more AFL legends than were previously envisaged, but this has meant that we had to make the tough decision to divert resources away from the Individual Career mode development. The individual Career Mode function will not make it into AFL 23, Career Mode will be entirely team based. I expect this mode to be include in future iterations of the game.

Re: microtransactions
You do not have to make purchases, things can be earned.

Re: general development
So fundamentally flawed, in so many ways, it’s bananas.

We are doing AFL as it’s a passion project, without us doing it there would not be one being made.

So much more upside with making games that are played internationally, let alone one that will not even be played in every state in this country.

I wonder if they motion captured someone kicking the ball over 60 metres, so when the in-game player kicks it that far, the animation is just like someone who would kick it that distance. Usually they fly into the air a bit when they kick that far.
from footage we've seen they did, Short Kick, Medium Kick, Long Kick. All it needs is just to be toned down, considering its not the release build im hoping that its fixed for the 4th

I haven't read this thread since last night. Is there anything worth going back to look at? haha

The difference is this thread has the CEO of a game I really care about. The wild negative of wading through this thread is offset by my want to get info from bigant.

Other threads I can tune out as I need to, but this one is different.

Anyway, I’m contributing to the rubbish I’m complaining about so I’ll shut up from here.
fair enough, not sure if Ross will be back here probably has his hands full trying to get this game out

For a subscription based set up you would need daily tasks ect against the AI, a lot of stuff would need to be against the AI as this game won't generate the player base of other sport titles. Interesting conversation though.

There are aspects of NBA 2k's MyTeam that I think would really translate well to this game and I would be trying to emulate a lot of it because there are some really good offline modes that would translate to AFL

  • I hope there is XP in this game and levels like MyTeam with a reward for reaching max level (Card)
  • Moments of the Week - This works where you basically have a agenda to do within a game that was played, e.g. Geelong vs Sydney 4min quarters - Kick 5 goals with Jeremy Cameron. These would change weekly and might reward packs or currency.
  • Daily Agendas - Reward small XP towards goals
  • Weekly packs - Players within those packs reward XP depending on what you need to complete with them (Goals, possessions, tackles etc.)
  • AFL 6s - A bit like the NBA having triple threat could do AFL 6s as a quick fire gamemode
  • "Crunch Time" gamemode - 1 quarter to play or 5mins or something.
  • Domination - Go through and play every team from 18 to 1st and then All Stars, Big V, WA, SA teams with difficulty level providing different rewards.
  • Limited/Unlimited game modes - Unlimited is you can use any cards you like but Limited has a set of rules where for example you might only be allowed to use Green or Gold (whatever level there is) cards

Other things that I think would be good to have is Evolutions where you can upgrade cards by completing certain tasks with them, e.g. if you had a low level Curnow Card then you might have to kick 50 total goals over multiple games to evolve his card to the next level.

FearTheBeard13 actually raises a great question. How much money are we willing to spend on in game purchases to help the Pro Team along after already dropping $79-99 on the game itself.

Personally wouldn’t mind a subscription model (crazy I know) where you pay say, $5 a month to get a box of packs every month. Could be a way to lock people in to monthly payments for a discount on packs?

Cheers mate. I’m not opposed to the concept of microtransactions being in this game since they’ll profit both Big Ant for the next iteration and also the past players themselves. The monthly box is a good idea, I’m definitely going to grind it out for most of the legends though but if there’s a quick and easy option to get Didak, Swan, Cousins or Akermanis then I’d pay for that.

No, just watch Twistie3 latest video. It’s gameplay from the older build from submission a good month or more ago. doesn’t really provide anything new we hadn’t already seen, feature wise- and as I said, it’s still not the finished product we get on the 4th.

It is the best series going around let's not kid ourselves. Pretty much everyone who knows soccer knows it and plays it
It's not gameplay wise, it's inferior to PES and eFootball. Loads of comments on YouTube I see people criticize FIFA, and say Konami's Soccer games have the superior gameplay. FIFA is usually called an arcade style and scripted game, whereas eFootball is thought as more of a simulation style.

The fact that cunnington is 91 and dusty 87 when both have had injury trouble last few years yet dusty is obviously better is ******* disgraceful lol

Everything we’ve seen are the incomplete versions in the game- for example management and career menu screens shown yesterday is from the submission build and is obviously incomplete. It would be good to actually see the complete game by now- which was btw delayed for three weeks, and be able to see the apparent ‘deep’ management mode and other ‘yet to be announced features’ that are within the modes. Still no mention of VFL and other state leagues in game (which is a requirement btw for the management mode to be the deepest yet in an AFL game- as claimed)

Keeping in mind it was delayed by 3 weeks, how hard is it to just show us the completed version of the game? Why with this nonsense of showing the submission build 5 days out from release?

That's why I'm crossing my fingers that the release build is far more advanced, and the builds we've seen so far are like the 70-80% completed versions. I really want the contested play to be more complex, it's a bit unfinished from what I saw, at the moment. We know some of the obvious missing aspects.

I have a question for everyone planning to play Pro Team mode when the game’s out:

How much $ would you spend on a pack that contained your all time favourite club legend? If the option is there to just buy instead of grind, what would you expect to pay? If I personally could get Dane Swan or Alan Didak instantly for say $6-$10 I probably would really consider it.
$6-10 for one player? That's ridiculous.

Overall it's better , fifa has its faults , but in general it's better than pes, it's popular for a reason

It's definitely not better gameplay wise. FIFA is choppy and scripted, whereas eFootball is weighted with ball and player movement being more fluid and realistic. You'll see those sentiments on YouTube comparison videos, FIFA is considered inferior gameplay-wise to eFootball. FIFA just has the monopoly on all the licenses and has nicer graphics and presentation, but with inferior gameplay. And popularity doesn't mean better, it's just brand recognition. McDonalds is definitely not the best food just because it's the most popular food franchise...

An example would be the team management screen shown in Pink Panters video yesterday. Blue as placeholders for team colour, massive chunks of space in the player profiles (probably for player portrait photo). Clearly incomplete.

I wonder what will happen when you create a team for example Tasmania. What will they sing after the game lol

Food and soccer games are different.
Fifa is better overall, that's your personal opinion but the weight of numbers speak for itself. Otherwise everyone would be playing PES not fifa that's reality

The same principle applies, brand recognition, or quantity over quality. Also, with your logic, that would mean Soccer is a much better sport, because more people play and watch it, over Australian Rules Football. And for the reasons I stated, people will gravitate to a video game with inferior gameplay, because of the brand recognition, licenses, and better presentation.

I have yet to see anyone dive deep and make honest observations into why modern FIFA or modern EA games have superior gameplay to its competitors, it's always the opposite.
