AFL 360 - Ken Hinkley (Pre Game Speech to the Leaders)

The whole tapping on the arm thing was just Hart asking Kenny if he wanted some food, Kenny didn't respond because he was too focused on the match. However Hart got his attention and ken turned around and yelled 'ALRIGHT I'LL HAVE A BLT!'. Nothing in it, just lunch orders.

I can see why Ken got turned down by so many places, great player, great coach, average media performer. Richmond, St Kilda, Adelaide, Port Adelaide all turned him down because of his lack of media presence and ability to use Microsoft Powerpoint. We just got lucky cause we shit the bed big time and shafted Primus before it was too late. Now all the teams that chose others are in trouble of being left in his wake.

I wish Damien Hardwick, Scott Watters Alan Richardson, and Brenton Sanderson luck, because they're gonna need it.

Nah, this week I'd just prefer more of whatever our coach told our troops last year that was good enough to beat your mob.

So you'd prefer 'don't worry boys, I paid off the umps to give us the largest free kick differential in a game since 1993, that should be just enough for you to sneak home'?

Got a lot of man love for Ken Hinkley.
I hope he can take Port to a premiership would be one of the best coaching performances considering where they were when he took over.

Everyone, take a deep breath.

The interest in the audio was not that it was the greatest pre-game speech for the general observer to be inspired by, but it was an insight into what really happens inside a football club, and not just a press conference or staged interview. In terms of authentic footage, it's perfect, they stuff that you don't get to hear very much at all.

And the players are the ones who are spruiking Ken's ability to inspire more than anyone else. And funnily, they are the only ones who I really care about whether they are inspired or not.

I quite liked it actually. Those expecting an Obama-like motivational speech filled with complicated analyses of the other teams weaknesses would be disappointed by this (I'm sure the vast majority of tactical stuff is covered throughout the week). What I thought was good about it was that it showed the psychology of the coach, and that he gets that before you walk out, it is important not to over-complicate things. The messages were simple and to the point. He obviously knows what players need to hear before they walk out on the field. He is an impressive individual and shows that all types can become a coach, just as long as they know how to speak to young men and make sure that what they say sticks with them. He has the gift.

After addressing the players pre game , Ken walked around the southern goal line in front of us in the Port members section. Must have been 99% Port in that area. The crowd gave him a huge cheer and he did an understated, solitary fist pump. F$ck it was great.

Has anyone heard his rev up from the 2003 GFL grand final?
He's always been a great motivator, which is why it's surprising how often Port have come into games looking flat over the years eg 2021 preliminary final.
