AFL Average crowd will only grow in years to come

And you're obviously not .
I guess it's too much to expect you to know the difference between average and gross .

Or how to use a full-stop?

As soon as comparisons are made with other countries or codes you cannot just compare averages. For example if a comparison is made between a code with 100 professional clubs with multiple division with promotion/relegation and one with 16/17/18 professional clubs, then a mean attendence isn't going to tell you much.

I realise the thread has the word average in its title, but the bottom line is the number of people passing through the turnstiles at each fixture.

yeah....................no .

Agree. The only reason people quote our average attendance is because it looks so good in comparison. It means bugger all in the end. If the EPL took an AFL approach to fixturing then their crowd average could be around 60,000+. They don't set a fixture to maximise attendance which is good. It is what sport should be.

Example: Chelsea vs Fulham. Both teams are located in Fulham in London. Chelsea's stadium is ~42,000. Fulham's is ~22,000. So the average over 2 games can only be ~32,000. If they wanted to maximise the attendance as the AFL do they could shift both of the games in the year to Wembley for 90,000 average for the season.

Tottenham/Arsenal same. It goes on.

I think that is what you call a professionally run sporting competition as opposed to the AFL.

Pffft! Are you kidding! The EPL is ALL about the money! No salary cap means more money for clubs and the EPL resulting in an extremely un fair competition. Guess when was the last time a Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea won the league? 1994-95. In terms of fans from smaller clubs the EPL is not a well run league at all. It's a league that has sold out corporately.

Yeah, and the word for that is "fair". Doing what the AFL does, giving clubs a leg up because they suck, is like handicapping good sprinters by putting weights on their backs, to even out the competition.

Mate I am referring to the fixture as I responded to. the AFL have a compromised fixture which is totally amateur stuff, the EPL do not.

And make no mistake that one day we will also have no salary cap, it may be some time away but it will happen and the same thing will happen here.
WCE, Adelaide, Coloingwood, essendon, Sydney and Brisbane we will be watching every year.

I could safely say right now that I could bet on over half the comp that will never win a flag in my lifetime now.

This is what we created.

Nah that's bullshit. The AFL believes in fairness, hence the excessive payments to smaller clubs. Every time this happens we are moving further and further away from a salary cap. And by the way why did you include Brisbane on your little rich list? Are you not aware that they have been losing millions over the last couple of seasons and have the second lowest crowd and membership totals in the competition only infront of the Suns?

GC and GWS finding their feet and rising up the ladder,
Port and Bris rising up the ladder,
Rich becoming a power and not selling home games
New and bigger stadiums

All reasons for bigger crowds

GC & GWS will be playing the bulk of their matches in 25k capacity stadiums. even the AFL's manipulation of the fixture wont increase average crowd numbers..............unless they stop fixturing home games for those two clubs. I wouldnt put it past them either.

Exacty what I said before .
AFL teams are base on a population catchment of roughly 500,000 people .
So all the cities involved have at least 2 AFL teams .
The USA has 34 NFL teams palying a 16 week season .
Australia has 18 QAFL teams and 16 NRL teams playing a 24 week season .
The avearge attendance at an AFL game is quite impressive when you take that perspective .It is roughly twice the NRL average .
You can excuse the EPL for being below then AFL average for a number of reasons if it makes you feel better .It's irrelevant .This thread is about the likely future direction of AFL attendances .There are reasons why there should should be some overall modest gains .

Metricon Stadium's capacity will be 40k if the Gold Coast win the Commonwealth Games bid, but that is years away. Could potentially be when Gold Coast FC have hit some serious form though so it could bring in excess 25k crowds. GWS can always schedule big matches next door to ANZ Stadium if it's free.

As stated before GC , GWS , WA and SA have long term elements .
SA and some other teams have short term elements .

I'm pretty sure the extra 15,000 seats for the Commonwealth Games are only temporary and it will be reduced back to 25,000 after the games.

If this year showed us anything, we're in for a couple of years where the average goes down, but the total goes up. This cannot be helped due to the stadium size differences at the Sydney Showgrounds and Carrara. (Not to mention stadiums like York Park, TIO and Canberra).

As for flag chances - St Kilda have been grand finalists twice in the last 5 years, the Bulldogs preliminary finalists twice in the same time. Melbourne had a crack in 2000. Freo made it to the top 4 last year before dying off. Really aside from the new teams, only Richmond havent been a decent chance in recent memory.

In 2012 there will be 8 matches in 20k or below stadiums in Tasmania (Bellerive's capacity is 16k) 4 games at Manuka, and probably another 2 in TIO Stadium, Darwin and 1 in Cairns. All these matches will obviously affect the overall average.

And yeah all the teams have had a genuine crack over the last decade except or Richmond. Even North who haven't done a lot since their 1999 premiership made the prelim in 2007. I believe this will continue over the next decade as well.

Scratch that, Manuka Oval will host 3 premiership matches and one Nab Cup game. And in case some people don't know the 'other' GWS home match is at the 10k capacity Blacktown Oval.
