Actually Leo, the opposite is true.

There are no standouts so therefor the group are even. That is what you want when you are a coach. Nathan Buckley was the standout during the 90s simply because most of the others were Munsons who couldnt play. Hence beltings galore.

The same applies to Geelong. They are very even. Geelong probably gave the captaincy to Harley to actually bring out a better footballer.

Totally disagree plugger, collingwood are no good now! They made 2 gfs under buckley so cant have been that bad. What about brisbane and voss, essendon and hird, stand out leaders in champion sides!

Played finals this year. Finished 5th. Not a bad effort for a team you think is no good.

I was talking about Buckley in the 90s.

The 2 grand finals they played in, he won a consolation Brownlow one year and was a part of a pretty good midfield the next. Holland, Lucuria, O'Bree, Burns, Lockyer, Buckley. Throw in Tarrant, Rocca, Prestigiacomo, Clement, Molloy (1 year). You have a pretty even spread.

That is Collingwood's strength. They are so even.

Ahh, with Brisbane, they also had another 4-5 blokes around the ball that made their premierships happen. You could have given the captaincy to any of those blokes, Lappin, Power, it wouldnt matter. Not to mention Lynch up forward, Mal Michael and Leppitsch down back. They were also very even across the board. Without those blokes, Voss would have just been another captain of another team that played in the AFL in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Not a tripple premiership captain.

It is teams that have standouts, that generally struggle. Not always, but most often.

I actually cant remember the last premiership team that had only 2 or 3 standout players.

Not really plugger. Have a think about the last however many premierships. All the teams have one or two standout leaders. Power and Lappin are not standout leaders. Geelong and Sydney being the exception to this rule.

2008 - Hawthorn - Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge standouts.
2007 - Geelong - Harley
2006 - West Coast - Judd and previously Cousins standouts.
2005 - Sydney - 3 musketeers
2004 - Port - Tredrea - Standout
2003,2,1 - Brisbane - Voss - Standout
2000 - Essendon - Hird - Standout
1999 - Kangaroos - Carey - Standout

well, there goes your crediblity.

you mentioned presti.

Presti and Molloy, *******s! Collingwood were crap last year, finished 5th but might as well been 10th they were that far from the top teams.

Buckley was stand out leader and stand out player of that team, no one else was any where near him.

Goal Sneak was right, LEADERS is what i said.

Anyway back to the topic, MAXWELL is the worst player choses as captain in AFL history.

Maybe he didnt see gary senior play. Surely you wouldnt remember much of him bigpapa. What year did he retire?

He played his last game in 1996 and retired in 1997, so it wasn't that long ago. I was playing my 4th year of footy by then.

I totally agree with saint leo and goalsneak. Standout leaders are a key criteria to a premiership team. Especially for a young team like the Pies.

Collingwood have lost Buckley, Clement and Burns within the space of 12 months. They are 3 big names that are probably easier to replace on the field than off. I just can't see Collingwood making up any ground on the front runners for at least a couple of years with such a lack of maturity. The appointment of Maxwell proves this in my opinion.

I know you were waiting for me to jump in Leo, how were Collingwood that far off top teams? Take out the Hawks and they smashed Geelong(2nd), beat stkilda(4th) twice, lost to bulldogs(3rd) by bugger all after copping injuries during the game. Also beat Sydney twice and Adelaide twice.
While on the topic of Maxwell, I'll admit he is no superstar but If he is such a *******, why has he never been dropped from a side that has played finals the last 3 years.
As for him never playing on anyone, he tagged scott thonpson in a final this year and gave him a flogging. Also remember him touching up Riewoldt once or twice as well.
Also he was selected as captain by Mick Malthouse, surely he knows a few more things about the game than us mugs who post on here. He sees the things behind the scenes that we dont.

Thats probably fair enough. But I would have thought that during the last couple of years with Rocca being injured and with injuries to Buckley and Burns at various times, Fraser would have been the natural successor for the Captaincy.

Fraser is as soft as they come. I'd have thrown Pendlebury into the deep end and gave him the job. At least when collingwood would be looking at playing deep into the finals (4-5-6 years) he will have had captancy experience and be at the peak of his career.
Maxwell is the sort of player who wants people to think he's tough couragous and isnt really. The sort of player who would probably train extra hard when Malthouse is watching..... every club has them

The last thing I want to do here fellas is come across as a maxwell fan. I would have had Lockyer, Fraser and Pendlebury in front of him. He might not be as courageous and tough as he makes out but he never takes a backward step and has a genuine passion for the club. Something that isnt as common these days

Haha great post 5 months down the track. I think Collingwood would be wishing they gave the captaincy to Pendlebury. He reeks class and leadership and is having a great season. As for Fraser like scottie said he is as soft as butter and Maxwell is just a fake tough guy.

didnt see any of the game..
huge effort though

I'm probably not alone in saying i thought he was going to be a dud and the only reason he was getting a game was beacuse of his last name and it was more in hope then anything..
But watching him at the Essendon Vs Richmond game he has really stepped up. Strong hands and he was easily outbodying Tayte Pears whose usually pretty strong. Also had a good sense of timing with his leaps.
