I think the Cutters seniors will remember the young fella from norths that dribbled one in from the boundary under pressure after screwing the first attempt

Guys ripping into the umpires has been done to death on here. Yes there not great but its what we have. Think you can do better grab a whistle and get out there yourself.

Yeah umpires do cop a fair amount of criticism on here. Is it justified? maybe/maybe not, guess it depends which side of the fence you are sitting on at the time.

Lachrilly, you had quite a strong opinion recently about 2 senior players at City Lions, allegedly drinking at half time, which was nothing but dribble , perhaps instead of sitting on your behind having a sticky at the games and passing judgement on players who you have no idea about, you should pull on the boots and have a run on a Saturday arvo.

I"ve certainly seen a lot worse umpiring than the standard up here. I don't think there have been any matches decided by umpires. People need to relax about poor decisions, they generally tend to even out.

Umpires make mistakes just like players. The amount of player mistakes (decision wise) I've seen here far outweighs the number of umpire mistakes.

That's a stupid thing to say and a comment that only an umpire would hide behind. I hope you have seen more mistakes from players this season, because there are 15 times as many as there are central umpires! Maybe no games have been lost yet due to bad umpiring, but is that the lofty standard you are happy with? That's as long as they don't cost a game then they're not going that bad?? Trust me they WILL cost a game soon enough. Let's just hope it's not a final!

I saw the 2 players myself so i have no reason to lie about it. I have better things to do than make up stuff about City Lions

They were 100% drinking as I was at the bar myself when they were... Lachrilly along with 40 others can vouch for the two players drinking so don't try and cover it up bigcity.... there are reasons why some teams are on the bottom of the ladder. Also Lachrilly does pull the boots on every Saturday and helps out with umpiring juniors on Sunday's... hope I haven't blown your cover Lachrilly ;)

Ok, upthemiddle, compared to the other leagues i've been involved in, this league has one of the lower standards of players yet a relatively good standard of umpiring, including goal umpires. The umpires go about their work very professionally here from what i've seen. A lot of players in this league make a lot of mistakes, they just don't stand out because they don't turn the game.

Contrasting to other leagues which have a higher standard of play yet worse standard of umpiring.

Would we all like AFL standard umpiring? Of course(even though people whinge about that too) but be realistic. With the 1980s brutish mentality of a few teams up here, the umpires do a decent job of keeping the game in control on most occasions. Every now and then they make mistakes, but that's part of football, get over it. Whingeing about it won't make it better, nor will screaming abuse at them on a Saturday. Everybody is out there doing the best that they know how, from players to umpires to drinks boys(grumpy men).

I completely agree!!!

"Head Umpire" (ppffft what a joke) Pierce has also contradicted himself, from statements made at the start of the season in regards to things such as players asking umpires (in an appropriate manner) why a decision has been made. Players are allowed (according to Mr head umpire) to ask an umpire in a respectable manner why they have made the decision that they have, to explain the decision etc. YET, Mr 'head umpire" himself has given away 50m penalties on several occasions at crucial moments in games.

One of these incidents cost City Lions their first and probably only win for the season against North Cairns. When one of our most respected and senior players asked "mate, was that play on was it or advantage?" after Norths had kicked a goal due to a "pierce losing concentration moment".
The ball was on its way back to the middle, and Pierce decided that, that statement deserved a free kick + a 50m penalty resulting in 2 goals for Norths. This was one of the most disgusting displays of umpiring that I have ever seen in my life. I understand that umpires are under pressure and yeah I would never like to be doing that job but standards are pretty poor currently.

We all know City probably would have ended up losing that game anyway (as I have said before I am a realist, I am not some blind one eyed supporter). But I would imagine that Norths would have wanted to win that game off their own boot, & not because of poor decisions made by umpires.

I guess at the end of the day, we're just going to have to suck it up. The Head Umpire has another 2 years to run on his contract:mad:. In saying all that, I still reserve the right to bitch and whinge about the substandard umpiring in what is known as the AFL Cairns League.:p:p:p

Kiss of death this week as follows -

Hawks to topple the Crocs
Cutters to smash the Lions
Norths to upset Centrals

On another note, still undecided on whether to go to the show. Was thinking of stuffing my face full of Dagwood Dogs and Waffles and then going on the Gravitron with the kids. I wonder how popular I'd be???

I dont play every saturday doc.Just when the boys are short in the 2's which has been a bit this year. The old body doesn't pull up as well as it used to. I enjoy umpiring the kids, trying to teach them as well as umpiring

In terms of mark of the year Surely "studs" holland must've gotten pretty high on Sunday if his foot connected with a saints bloke head.

Saint, you are obviously an umpire, and one that openly shows his allegience up here via your nom de plume. Seriously, READ what I write before replying with twisted replies that mock the rest of us while attempting to make you stand tall as some kind of beacon of truth!

I never asked for AFL standard umpiring, I simply questionned your standard of approval is far too low. To be happy that a game has yet to be decided by an umpire;'s poor form is a low, low standard to be happy with. To say that the standard of umpiring is relativley good is an outlandish claim and one that will gather zero support from anyone on here..

Also Saint, please tell us which leagues you believe to be of a higher standard of players, yet a lower standard of umpiring?? I have been involved in a large number of leagues of varying standards ranging from very high to some mid level country leagues, and believe that the playing standard in Cairns to be very good, whilst the standard of umpiring very poor.

Furthermore, to brand us who come on here to exchange opinions as whingers, is way out of line. If you don't like those with opinions then I suggest you don't log on, as I am sure that's what these sites are all about.
