AFL Canberra is desperate for umpires. Boys, if you club has any recently retired players who are keen to stay involved, get on the phone to Kevin Tingey at AFL Canberra.
Send a message out to your email lists, or get the info out any way you can, otherwise club umpires will be the standard for CD's rather than League umps...
Hey GF,
Thanks for spreading the word and calling for a few more ex-players to join the umpiring ranks. The more the merrier!
Unfortunately my old legs have meant I've hung up the whistle for the timebeing, leaving me stranded on a grand total of one Div 1 match.
But I've stayed on board this year and taken the Strength and Conditioning role with the umpiring group. Pre-season has been great, and numbers have been good right across the three disciplines (field, boundary and goals). The other night we had 65 at training. It's just a shame that this weekend there's a number of field umpires unavailable and some others in the development squad gaining a little bit more experience in junior ranks for the timebeing before being considered for senior ranks.
This has meant that unfortunately some matches this weekend don't have appointed field umpires and Club Umpires will be called upon. A lot of country leagues use Club Umpires on a permanent basis.
It would be great if anyone out there would consider giving umpiring a go. Despite what many of you might think (and what I also thought when I was playing) they're not a bad bunch.
We train two nights a week (Tues and Thurs) at 6.00pm at Manuka and even if you don't want to make a total commitment, maybe just coming to a few training sessions would allow you align yourself with a club (or your own club) and become their Club Umpire.
You won't make a living out of umpiring local footy, but the pay isn't that bad for pocket money. And you get the best seat in the house to watch a game of footy from!!
Anyone interested can post on here and I'll get in contact with you, PM me, or call Kev at the AFL Canberra offices.
Good luck to all for Round 1 and the season ahead.
Umpiring - it's your call!
Cheers,
Michael Goiser
