AFL Canberra Div3/Div2

Are you suggesting that I don't play football for fun? What other reason is there to play football? Money? I find it very difficult to imagine there is anyone playing AFL Canberra football and making a living out of it.
In my honest opinion the "commitment" required to play Div 1 is completely overrated. NEAFL is a different story, but we aren't talking NEAFL at the moment. You may be right about the attitudes of some past Div 1 players who were trying to get into a NEAFL team and hence had to train to that level etc, but things are changing. Div 1 sides won't be associated with NEAFL teams and therefore won't be training 3 nights a week and having recovery sessions etc (well I can't imagine they will be). If there is someone from Tuggeranong on here I'd like to ask them how many recovery sessions they attended and how many times a week they had to train to play in their Div 1 side.
Let me let you in on a little secret, players who play division 1 football also want to get pissed on a regular basis and not take themselves too seriously. That's not mutually exclusive to playing in a higher grade.

So you're telling me that the new division 1 sides comprising of the likes of the Bennett's, Klemke and others who have flagged their intent to stick around won't be training 3 times a week? Ridiculous. Division 1 is now the flagship grade for most clubs in Canberra. There will be money for all those who participate in this grade (barring maybe Tuggeranong/Gungahlin who will likely pay a few, and probably Ainslie/Eastlake who are supporting NEAFL sides as is) and the training commitments that come with such contracts.

You are kidding yourself if you think Belco/Qbn won't be training 3 nights a week, and Ainslie/Eastlake 1st div players will almost definitely be training with the NEAFL squads, 3 nights a week, recovery on the weekend too.

Surely AFL Canberra will be scrapping the draft of NEAFL players now that it looks as though div 1 will only be a 6 team comp?

That was due to the umpire telling us the wrong rule, 16 aside is stupid, that's two extra blokes that miss out in our reserves every game which is hard enough as it is.
Juggernauts have gone to Coota and other country teams away and have played 16 vs 22 when we have been short, we have never requested to a 16 a side team, it is a stupid rule
How do you explain all the forfeits this year?

Forfeits by who? Molonglo? the have forfeited one game in their history.
Majority of games by all clubs in Div 3 are played 22 vs 22, there is no point changing the rules to suit the 1 game in 2 weeks or longer where a team has less players but still wants to play with the same on the field. I have played in Coota several times for the juggers and we have played with no bench and no wings vs 18 guys in the field, that's because we signed up to play aussie rules. I think the rule as it is is too lenient, a team with less players shouldn't be able to demand 16 a side, it should be up to the team playing against them whether or not they play 18 vs 16. WHy should the teams that pull the players together be disadvantaged to having to give their guys less game time

I honestly doubt they'll be training that much. From what I've heard most players aren't getting paid, so its hard to ask players to train 3 nights a week without any incentive as you have mentioned. I guess time will tell, but at Gungahlin we wont be training 3 nights a week during the season, so if you want to try your hand at a higher division (hoping that we do go up to Division 1) without worrying about training 3 nights a week and weekend recovery sessions then come over to the Jets. Also we'll get pissed a lot and we won't take ourselves too seriously. ;):D

AFL comes up with a different idea every year, after the season ends saying this is what we are doing next year, last year it was a split div 1 into 2 grades. Maybe they should actually make a long term plan of what they want a business plan of how to get to it, not just say this is what we are doing, you all have to risk it to do it too.
This is the biggest problem of them all. Sort this out and I imagine things will turn around pretty quickly.

I find it hard to believe that Gungahlin will become competitive in the higher grade, if that is indeed the case. I fail to see how the Jets will recruit players if they are getting smashed on a weekly basis by teams with a more professional attitude, as I strongly suspect the case will be with Ainslie, Belconnen, Eastlake and Queanbeyan. Let's not forget Gungahlin didn't make finals (or were even close to finals) in either of the lower grades this past year. As for trying a higher grade... I could not have been happier than when we finally got a 4th grade side together, having played previously at the more serious reserves level, which I got jack of after a year, and the ever-raising standard of the 3s comp.

I moved to Gungahlin because I love coaching and I want to make a difference and try and help improve football in Canberra. I believe as I have said previously that the best thing for Canberra football is for the top Division to be competitive and healthy with a wealth of teams participating in it.
I could have stayed at Belconnen and been apart of a dominate team that I have no doubt will be unbeatable next year, but I felt that I could make a difference to Canberra football by helping an up and coming club become competitive at the highest level of local footy.
Don't get me wrong I desperately want to win premierships (having come close too many times but having never won one), but like I said earlier personally I want to challenge myself and I'd take more satisfaction out of making Gungahlin competitive in Division 1 than I would winning a premiership in Division 1 with a NEAFL quality team.

I'm not convinced that training twice a week will be enough to become competitive in the new Division 1, but I guess we shall see. Best of luck with it, it's a good thing to have a crack at I reckon.

Sorry for bulk posting today, but I feel like I'm on a roll, so may as well... It is good to see some action in here in the offseason anyway, I guess...

What are people's views on the "draft" that is to take place next month?

Seems entirely unnecessary now it is looking like being a 6 team competition. Would have thought Eastlake players go to Tuggeranong, Ainslie players go to Gungahlin, and that would be that? Even if this is the case, I can't imagine either team is particularly happy about it.

The amount of weeks we played teams that doubled up players was not funny. The only teams we played that easily had the numbers were the one town teams. 5 forfeits is way too many in my opinion. The VFA played with 16 a side for about 80 years so 16 is as much in aussie rules history as 18. When Belconnen played us they doubled up 11 blokes I think. If both teams have the numbers play 18 but I think 16 takes the pressure of

The only thing I don't like about it is, Seahawks asked to play 16 a side when they came to Glbn, We were asked 1 hour before the game. They/you had 18 players. If we played 16 a side 6 on the bench really is hard to do the rotations and blokes miss out on footy.

With the promotion of teams, over the last 3 years Coota, Yass, Cooma and Goulburn would've done just as well if not better then ANU and ADFA. Wouldn't have won a comp but might've snuck into finals. If all teams go up at once it won't be as big a shock playing the more skilled teams because we all play against each other now.

Cant wait to see how teams in div2 who have to travel to yass handle club umpires .Ando,s suspension should be finished in round 2 I believe(sorry ando)

12 Magpies gross mis representation of who and what you are I believe . On here you have been asking leading question,s in regards to formats and what not from the league while you have had a direct path to info from the same .It,s like selling raffle tickets while you hold the winning ticket . Best change your name to no 1 jet a , or maybe minus 1 magpie !!!Best of luck for 2015

For what its worth QBN trained 2 nights a week this year, with an optional recovery session on a Monday. Don't think that will be going up in a lower grade.

I reckon we played with 16 on at least half a dozen times this year. And sometimes that's with players doubling up in the next grade as well. The problem with only telling a side an hour before the game is half the time 60 minutes before the game we were running round trying to see if we could even rustle the 16 up. I'm sure there were reasons we went from having 90 players in pre-season 2012 to 40 in 2014 and our reserve grade went from (in 2012) giving Div 2 a dozen players a week to (in 2014) trying to drag half dozen up so they could get a team on the park. I reckon things might be looking up next year though. I wish Gungahlin all the best in that regard.

These were the games we really struggled. when our seniors and ressies were split up. We had max 18 players, no umpire, no strappers maybe a runner but they normally had to play. The only teams I seem to see not struggle for numbers in div 3 were the four one town teams. I know people wont agree but I just think it will help make for more even games and will stop blokes playing two games in one day which in turn can disadvantage their senior side

I can see your point of view. It would be a struggle if you guys don't get enough numbers, hope that changes for you next year.

Maybe Yass and Goulburn could merge and have 2 teams. ;)

Completely wrong southcab. Until earlier this week I knew as much as anyone else on this forum, probably less than some. I still don't know whats happening next year. What I did know was that Gungahlin was looking to push up into Division 1 either in 2015 or 2016.
Why would I ask questions I had the answer to? What could I possibly gain from that?

Every week we seem to have 38 - 40 blokes just a couple short of two full teams. Just cant seem to get those 4 or 5 more

I've got a fair idea of the reasons 3rd Grade, but I'll keep my thoughts to myself. ;)

Jets had their first training run on Thursday with a fantastic turnout. Over 50 players showed up for the first hit out. Exciting times at the Jets!!! Next training session is on Monday at 6.30. Anyone keen to get on board feel free to show up at training, or PM me if you like. GET ON BOARD!
