Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

Actually, that's not true, Junior.

Last year we had two 100+ point beltings together with a 99 point thrashing, whilst this year our biggest defeat for the season was by 66 points. We also had the third least points 'scored against' for the spoon team since 1970.

If that's what you're hanging your successes on; that you have the third least scored against for a wooden spooner since 1970.. then you're really clutching at straws

You silly boy.
Melbourne-B
Beautifully done. Played some good football. Bloody some future champions. Found the Cougar. Got Grimsey up and about. Improved Jetta's game. Made a great find in Bennell, the next MacLeod. And still acquired two picks at the top of the draft
Actually...
Melbourne- B+
No.. not beautifully done.
Sure, a few players showed a bit of promise, big call on Bennell, way to early to be making assumptions like that, but at the end of the day your season was pretty mediocre.

I'm all for being optimistic, but really, you're a long, LONG way off.
You won a few games, and a few young players showed a few good signs... but at the end of the day you still won the wooden spoon!

In my view, you make your grade based on the previous season and the expectations leading up from that. Your expectations weren't very high for obvious reasons, but there is no way in blue hell you could give Melbourne a B.. let alone a B+ for their season. D+ is the best you could hope for in my opinion. Still need to win a few more games and be competitive.

You finished last. That can't be classified as anything other than an F.

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

whats the go with melbourne supporters being happy with their season, easy to please im guessing.

It sickens me how much they are hanging the hopes on this years two first draft picks in terms of thats where the improvement is going to come from. People thought carlton were bad with the way they gloated and hung their hopes on draft picks. Melbournes taken it to a whole new level

Will finish bottom 2 again easily next year

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

What is your criteria for grading? I would agree with an F if it is purely Expectation vs Actual with no looking at why.

I don't think its expectations so much as what a club would be trying to do.

Melbourne was trying to get games into youngsters and win no more than 4 games of footy, which they did.

Essendon, Carlton and Brisbane were both trying to make the finals for the 1st time in a long time, so they all get decent grades.

Hawthorn was trying to win another premiership and they failed miserably.

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

Comparison of on-field age v actual ladder gives a 'rating' based on where in the cycle teams are approximately:

Peak Age: (A = Top-2, B = Top-4, C= Top 8, D = >8th)
26.11 Sydney (12th - D)
25.82 W Bulldogs (3rd - B)
25.67 Geelong (2nd - A)
25.67 St Kilda (1st - A)
25.24 Port Adel (10th - D)
25.07 Adelaide (5th - C)

Development: (Top-4 = A, Top 8 = B, Top 12 = C >12 D)
24.48 Collingwood (4th - A)
24.47 Fremantle (14th - D)
24.37 Nth Melb (13th - D)
24.29 Bris Lions (6th - B)
24.03 Essendon (8th - B)
23.90 Richmond (11th - C)

KIDS (Top 8 = A, Top 12 = B, >12 = C)
23.70 West Coast (15th = C)
23.68 Carlton (7th = A)
23.64 Melbourne (16th = C)
23.56 Hawthorn (9th = B)

So my ratings, based on what was put on the field vs performances are:

A - Geelong, St.Kilda, Collingwood, Carlton
B - Bulldogs, Brisbane, Essendon, Hawthorn
C - Adelaide, Richmond, West Coast, Melbourne
D - Sydney, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, North

Hawthorn and Carlton rated above Adelaide?

LOL

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

I think Melbourne finished exactly where they wanted to finish (after about midway through the season when we were sure we werent going to make finals).
Pick 1 + 2 + the spoon is a lot better than a finish anywhere from 9 - 15 in most Melb supporters eyes (and probably in those of other clubs).

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

or another way (age position v ladder position) - basically how well you've done in relation to everyone else. I've 'regraded' based on this as it's more accurate than arbitrarily assigning age groups.

A
Carlton + 7
Hawthorn + 7

B
Brisbane + 4
St.Kilda + 3
Collingwood + 3
Essendon +3

C
Bulldogs +1
Adelaide + 1
Richmond + 1
Geelong - 1
Melbourne - 1
West Coast - 2

D
North - 4
Port - 5
Fremantle - 6
Sydney - 11

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

With the side Adelaide put out each week, they should have finished 6th. Sydney and Port were well down, pushing them to 4th. They finished 5th.

I'd argue that was "acceptable" rather than "excellent".

Carlton (7th) and Hawthorn (9th) shouldn't have been anywhere near finals. The blues really have had an excellent season.

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

So youth is an obstacle that must be taken into account when measuring the quality of a team? Not taking into account injuries? Fixture? Actual output? Pfft.

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

I would say just based on their seasons as a whole but also how they did expectations vs actual result

St Kilda-A+
Geelong-A
Collingwood-A
Dogs-B+
Adelaide-A+
Brisbane-B+
Carlton-B
Essendon-B
Hawthorn-D
Port-D+
West Coast-C
Sydney-C
North-E
Freo-D
Richmond-F
Melbourne-D

Th reigning premiers shouldn't have gotten anywhere near the finals?

A fine example of you can use stats to prove anything.

Good heavens. I did not want to win the wooden spoon. We deserve an F this year. We won 4 out of 22 games. Sure I'm glad that we're getting more talented kids, but 2 consecutive wooden spoons is an epic fail. Arguing that being 16th last year somehow means we shouldn't be upset with 16th this year is trying to put a brave face on a pathetic situation. Any team that comes 16th could use that as an excuse the following year, yet only we have managed to stoop to the levels of Carltank in recent times. Certainly our run of injuries didn't help and a bunch of our kids are showing some promise, but 4 wins over a season should be and always will be embarassing.

If every team "wanted to finish" 16th as soon as they were out of the hunt then the last few rounds become a mockery.

At what point did we put out a side that resembled our premiership side? I think the best we did was 16, and that was only for a fortnight.

(although point taken, we won the premiership last year when we were the 3rd youngest on field - lets just call that an A+).

Re: AFL.com End of Season Reports

Carlton given a B now. Not that I disagree with that.

Still scratching my head at how they thought Sydney was worth a B?!?

Because the Sydney supporters will bail on the club if it gets a grade lower than that? ;)
