I would be very suprised if Geelong would give up F1 for pick 28 (32 after matches) with only 10 picks off the board. Assuming Kako gets bid by the saints.

Just a plain F2 and maybe some points is a lot less to give up and I think teams would take their chances
Thats why i said F2 or F3 + 28

Cats F1, F2 for 28, F2 and F3

Definitly a combination that works.

Remember the suns traded a F1 for pick 27 to get Jeremy Sharp. If teams really like a group of players/player then they give up a fair bit. Cats have to be close to favs for the flag with Baz imo

If we were to trade with you I’d say we’d be after both 28 and 31. For our FF plus 45 or 57. Hasn’t been any noise in the media about us being involved with Ess but we tend to keep stuff very close to our chests.

Most of my interest relates to what we do with 28 and 31.

Trading back into the first round sounds like a pipe dream.

Agree, although the first round goes to pick 27

Its going to be F2s or a combo for an F1 unless the Kako bid hasnt come until 15/16 GWS picks and we go hard for a player there with an F1 and 28/31 for one of those

Yeah. I think in terms of any Geelong trade it would be a combination of things. I think there’s a good working relationship there.

I think the reason it doesn’t happen is because Geelong will want to be sure that they are getting a player they think is worth a F1 and I think that’s unlikely with close to 20 picks between any bid match and pick 32 (28 after bids)

Think it’s more likely you get something like 45 + F2 for one of those picks. Seems a win win for both clubs

Issue is we can’t wait that long to be taking advantage of teams trading for specific players. I suppose we can ask for F1 but with saints bidding at 11 teams would have to have a 22 player long list of guys they think is worth a first to consider it

We also don’t have F3 thanks to the pick 9 trade

Edit

Say we did something like this

28 for North F2 and a 40s pick
Then 32 for 45 and Cats F2

Those picks start to move up as bid matches come in. Then we get chances in that 40s range or could do that same deal of 40s+ F2 to get into the the 30s if we’re just trying to dodge a bid

First round likely lasts until 27

18 teams
Then you have

Ashcroft
kako
Lombard
Marshall
Saints priorty pick
GWS priority pick

I think we could get back in before pick 27 with Dees first, maybe throw in a third rounder too.

there is a lot of hyperbole in that
And Ablett is just looking on . He has no pressure and is also known for talking up drafts a bit.
I think the question about why is fair but in reality we have botched up so much stuff in the last 10 years that the best play is to play the safe game and take the bunch of picks when they where available. Draft the best small forward and see where it goes from there. There will be people here who will lose their minds when the bid comes after 9 but in all honesty I prefer a safe and steady approach right now.
I keep going over this draft and I do not buy super draft. I think it is good and has depth but what made 2001 a super draft was star quality in a variety of different types and sizes. They where not a bunch of very good 180-182 cm midfielders. Hodge 185cm. Judd 189cm. Ball 183cm. Bartell 187cm. Hale as a ruck and there where several really good finds in the second / third / fourth rounds. It was not all the top 20.
The two players this year who have a bit of a point of difference in Lalor and Langford will go in the top 8 so we would not have been in range to get them anyway.
2014 is rated highly and it was not all about the top 20 either. 2018 the same. Some good in the top 20 but also some good further into the draft.

Adelaides list manager has Kako inside the 4-7 prospect range in this draft. As good as any small forward hes seen come through recently
He's just trying to make us match bid with more points. Bastard.

The club has stated we’re only trading back in if a player we rate in the top 8 or 9 is available. Hard to believe that’s realistic a player we rate that highly will be available in the 20s

I think unless we trade with one of the Tigers late picks, you are our most obvious trade option. As you say the relationship or goodwill exists from last year too. We could potentially trade up from 45 - that would be a decent result for both parties. We will know pretty early on in the evening! You will be trading, just about what and who with.

Depending on where a bid lands, 28 and 31 for F1 and 45 is more than good enough for us.

It's a pretty even draft, plus quite a few NGA / Father-Son bids to be matched, could easily see a player rated around our top-10 could be there around 20 something. Every club has different list needs.
