Recruiting AFL Draft Watch 2024 - What do we do, we don't have a top 10 pick?

I’d be taking both small forwards imo. Small forwards are just so important in the modern game, we’ve got to try and build a forward line like hawthorn or gws
So Kako and Berry? Would be good. Geelong's smalls destroyed Port last night.

If Rosas becomes an option, then I think we can look at a damaging mid/medium forward to pair with Kako. A powerful goal kicker like Lalor.

The game is moving away from territory dominance and more towards efficiency inside 50.

We could probably afford to add 1 more small but with Gresh, Kako, Saad, Daveys, Menzie + Merrett/Calders/Roberts we seem pretty set for smalls

Especially if you group in Guelf and Perk as pressure/medium forwards

Not against adding someone late or taking a chance on a fringe AFL player or good VFL player but it seems like overkill for now at the top of the draft with another NGA SF in the pipeline

Difference between elite smalls and not. Davey's and Menzie are clearly not

Elite small forwards don’t become elite for awhile Menzie and Davey are still very young (not saying they will become elite) Drafting Kako and the best other small forward won’t reap rewards in the short term

I'm not so sure about that, I think elite small forwards (ie picked early-ish first round) generally impact straight away.. it's the middle rung types or rookies that eventually come good that take a while. Lets look at recent history.

Watson #5 - fairly good early impact
Sheezel #3 understand position changed but big impact
Konstanty #20 - no impact, inj (not first round)
Rachele - #6 can debate his ability but he made a year one impact
Pickett #12 - yes early impact
Weightman #15 - ok early impact, killed us on debut but fired year 2
Rankine #3- yes early impact

Reckon there's enough evidence to say the top end small forward can impact right away, which is put berry and Kako in the range of

It’s not to say they can’t impact but your not looking at that elite 35+ goal a year player straight away

Oh yeh for sure, by impact I'm also looking at the ability to tackle, pressure, (which anyone should be able to do) along with elite positioning and scoring some goals. The guys we have do none of the above, I'd back a couple of high end ones early in this draft to totally superseed the outputs of any small fwd we now have.

In total your top teams carry 3 pressure/small Forwards.

Assuming Kako is elite and El Achkar next year is also Elite the team should have 2/3 SF spots for the next decade filled so bringing in someone like Berry (as good as he’s going to be) completes that line. While burning any potential outcome with Davies or moving Merrett there as he ages. Not to mention Gresham is locked in for a few years.

Far better to use the pick This year to fill another position of need.

Biggest need on the team is 186-194 HB or Inside mid that’s a good ball user. With the draft so stacked going anywhere else just feels like a waste to me

A lot of good small forwards can also play in other areas aswell, for example we could always use someone like Joe Berry at half back or wing if we are lucky enough to have a lot of small forward options

I guess your elite small fwd generally has high footy IQ as standard, it's a pre requisite of the role because you are feeding off scraps for a living so you best know where they will come from.

High footy IQ never goes astray in other areas...

I would take Harry Armstrong or Alix Tauru with our pick. Tauru will be available but I doubt Armstrong will be.
Kako Gresham and Guelfi would be first choice small forwards.
I have doubts about either Davey making it.
Menzie is a spud for mine.

The more I think, the more I like the idea of South Australian young gun Kobe Ryan as a small defender.

Tough, hard, loves to tackle. Obviously defensively minded but doing the grind work in the midfield for West Adelaide

We're in a position where we really should be taking another KPF with the plethora of options in this draft and add a running half back somewhere in there as well..

Pick 8; Harvey Langford, Sam Lalor, Tobie Travaglia
Isaac Kako bid matched
Pick 30 odd, Tom Sims, Whitlock twin, Jonty Faul,
Later round pick; Archer Day-Wicks, Sam Davidson, Riley Bice,
Rookie pick; Kpbe Ryan, Matt Foley, Cam Nyko,
Cat B rookie; Jayden Nguyen,

Don't need them to be elite straight away, but at least it would show a shift in strategy in moving toward modern footy by looking to invest in elite small forwards.

Been waiting for you to mention Tauru. Have watched a few games since you alerted me to him. Looks like a decent prospect. Nice mark. Pretty reasonable athletically. Attacks the ball hard.

Ollie Hannaford putting his name up in lights with his 6th midway through the last. The Rebels who barely scraped into finals are beating the ladder leading Falcons in an elimination final

Edit. Jonty Faull with his fourth on re start
Falcons very lucky to be where they are on the ladder, they were never going to beat some of the other sides at full strength

Cooper Hynes might not have the laser accurate kick but he is a bit of a Hayden Young clone

Watched most of the Rays v Power game,

Couple of names I want to throw up as later chances,

Harrison Doughton, 185cm utility, Rays
Impressed with his marking, tackling and ball use. Not an overly impactful player but just seems to do a lot of things right. And well

Jordan Dohertey, 199cm, ruck, Rays
Overseer big man is a Dean Cox ruck. Works hard around the ground and can hit the scoreboard.

Tom Matthews, 170cm, small fwd, Power
Can take a big mark and kicked 2.3. Looks exciting albeit moments sort of player

Want to claim Ben Hopkins (Rays) as well. Good
Ball used on the outside and provided plenty of dash from behind the stoppage.
