a lot of irrelevant stuff there but:

Imagine the earnings that could have been earned if the American public had understood it and that coverage continued today.
why do you care

Until that is addressed Aussie Rules will never be a serious consideration by a viewing public outside of Australia, it's that simple.
good. the game goes overseas at any great scale the Australian comp is dead.

it will forever be termed a "novelty" only Aussies could possibly get,("that's not a knife matey", chuckle, chuckle.)
took that more at a (justified) crack at BT being an ocker fool, than anything serious

I don't know why I care. I guess because I love the game and can't help but feel the world should get to know this great game.
As far as the dollars go, I imagine the revenue flowing back down to player and fan level, being poured into the game (maybe that's naive).
Oh well, like you say. Maybe keeping it to ourselves is a good thing.
We may as well stop wasting all the dollars the AFL spends on trying to grow it overseas with that attitude.

Fair point I never considered.. If the game becomes even slightly popular in the states and the moneys available.. Watch all the good players go overseas until we have the A-League of AFL and the English Premier League in the states

haha very much so re the bolded
Yeah I have all these lectures in my head regarding "Economies of Scale". There is some truth to the facts regarding product pricing and economic scale.
In theory, just as occurs with other consumer products, the more the product gets taken up by the market and the volume of sales increase the cheaper the product becomes (basically).
Applying that to the AFL would in theory see a fall in costs to the consumer (fans). Reduced ticket prices, improved facilities etc.
Well that's the theory anyway.

income to the game has increased about a billion fold in the last 15 years
no aspect of the game is cheaper to the fan than it was before

How stupid was the AFL getting rid of the coats + hats for the goal umpires?

Basically every American I've ever heard talk about the game mentions the goal umpires.
Yes, travelling through Africa, Europe and North America, the locals always seems to ask about the goal umpires and signalling for a goal: "How big's ya dick?"

Great videos, love Collingworth, "Rugby" and Nathan Fry.

It does seem quite stereotypical of the USA that the broadcasters are really bemused & amused at the idea of different sports being played around the world.
Ive always found that attitude to be pretty arrogant in general in a "oh how quaint, how do you do that again? Oh thats cute" kind of way. I mean, even a 2 minute bit is worthy of some preliminary journalism that would very easily show that we arent even close to being rugby or what a goal is worth. Instead you get the "carnival freak show" story again and again.

I don't mind a bit of coverage, but I'd hate for it to take off overseas, especially in the U.S.
Currently we have a sport that we get to watch at the highest possible level, that would quickly end if it was popular over there.

Would rather hear US commentators than this rubbish;

Woweee, check out those results Darc, the crowd out there are NOT HAPPY WITH ME! Darc: yeah that is dead set the best call you've made all year BT, I can't believe these results. BT: Whaddya u think Richo? GIMME SOMETHING RICHO!! Richo: um er yeah BT they don't like ya much do they. Also he is so lazy when he commentates. Eg. instead of saying what a lovely kick someone did he would go, "person goes bang”.

&

Dermott Brereton- 'Gee He's a great size isn't He? 190-191, about 6'2, 6 2 and a half in the old language. Reminds me of <insert nondescript Hawthorn player from the mid- late 80's

& The list goes on.....

This, precisely this.

Supporters of other sports hold up the 'international' status of their sports as some kind of talisman. How many times have you heard words similar to 'yeah but AFL's not played overseas'? I just say 'I do NOT want it to be popular overseas. I watch the best players play the best sport on the planet for 7 months a year, and the best sporting coliseum in the world, where I watch this, is a 20 minute tram ride from my house'. How many sports on the planet can claim this?

Actually enjoyed that a lot. Wasn't patronising and they did a pretty good job of emphasising some of the best parts of the sport for a new audience.

Generating interest over here is a MASSIVE up hill battle until it gets some more mainstream coverage.
It's interesting cause the AFL has started getting some attention on Deadspin, I think because they're able to take grabs from the FS coverage.

I don't understand why the U.S. Haven't adopted the game of AFL considering it would be an easy learning curb for them. The argument is usually they are too lazy to learn the rules, which aren't that difficult to understand..

By the way that Lindsay Thomas grab was incredible..never seen that before, he was up there for a few minutes.
