It’s round four and the AFL season is well and truly under way in 2018. Collingwood and Adelaide have frustrated their supporters, but it looks as if both teams have turned a corner and are looking to put together a consistent patch of games.

Many will remember the last time Adelaide and Collingwood duked it out, with the sides playing out one of the games of 2017. Collingwood had a 50-point lead in that third quarter, but managed to blow that lead, with Mitch McGovern kicking a goal after the siren to allow the Crows to leave with a draw.

Collingwood

Collingwood finally managed to notch up their first win of the season last Friday, beating Carlton in strong fashion. While the Magpies were not completely dominant, they did what they needed to do against Carlton, and improved the morale around the club dramatically. Collingwood had a number of standout performances last week, with a number of players chipping in solid performances as well. Brodie Grundy was once again sensational, beating premier ruckman Matthew Kreuzer quite handily. Steele Sidebottom also put in a best on ground performance, with Josh Thomas also chipping in five goals. This win was exactly what needed to kick start the season. However, the difficulty of opponents kicks up several notches as the Magpies traveling to Adelaide to take on the Crows. Collingwood come into this match still without Jamie Elliott, and also lose star player Taylor Adams. Despite having a solid record in Adelaide, the Magpies have played quite poorly in Adelaide Oval, still yet to win a game.

Jordan De Goey is the man to watch this week, as he returns from his club suspension after being caught drunk driving in the off-season. De Goey will be looking to silence the doubters, who have called for him to be traded, and many believe that his career is at the crossroads. De Goey did look the goods at times last season, but was inconsistent.

Adelaide

After a terrible start to the season, losing to the Bombers, Adelaide have gotten back on track to record back to back wins against sides in Richmond and St Kilda. While Adelaide have not been absolutely ruthlessly dominant in either the wins, they have done enough to get the job done against both sides. The win against Richmond was truly remarkable for the Crows, as they were down to one man on the bench, and still managed to kick away. The Crows have shown little evidence that they will have a sort of hangover after the crushing loss in the Grand Final in 2017. A win against the Magpies will not prove much, but it is imperative that the Crows just keep banking wins. One category that the Crows are not performing well in is scoring. Last season the Crows were the highest scoring team, beating out the second most team by 300 points. Yet this season, they have only scored over 105 points once.

Eddie Betts is the man to watch from the Crows. The small forward has become a superstar in his stint with the Crows, but his start to 2018 has been less than ideal. He will be looking to prove some doubters wrong, and show the football world he has got something left in the tank. Another man to watch for the Crows is Tom Doedee. Doedee shocked the football world, as well the Adelaide BigFooty board when the Crows selected him with the 17th pick. The Crows board went into meltdown after the pick, and the anger continued as he had no played a game in two seasons. However, the patience has paid dividends, with the young player managing to be nominated for the rising star after his excellent round two performance against the Tigers. The Magpies will need to watch Doedee’s intercept marking as well as the rebound from defense.

Matchup to Watch

Two of the games top tier ruckmen will collide on Friday, with Brodie Grundy and Sam Jacobs coming up against each other in what should be a crucial matchup in deciding this game. As mentioned, Brodie Grundy has been excellent in the past two games, continuing his form from last season. Sam Jacobs has also been excellent in the past two games. This sets up a fascinating matchup between the two AA potential ruckman in what could go a long way into determining the outcome of the match.

Tip

Adelaide are the healthier side, in better form, and an all around better side than the Magpies. While the Magpies are improving, Adelaide will be too much for them.

Crows by 42.

It'll be wet. A storm will rage above, JDG will seek his redemption on the earth below. Cox will pull thunder from the sky and kick 7 goals. Pendles will own the Sloane.

Pies by 3 points.

No Crouch brothers.......play like we did against them last year and against GWS and it is game on.

Unleash Jordan De Goey.

Pies by 1 point.

Need Pendles and Sidebottoms class in the wet.
Would like a thread on the matchups for this contest would be interesting to see who goes on who.

Think we might be in for a bit of a shock here.

Adelaide are not Carlton. We really need to step up even on last week.

Fasolo and Elliott still not playing will hurt us. Don't know why they're not?! Stupid. They should be automatically locked in if fit. Can change games on the back of their own boot meanwhile we have persisted with Stephenson (6 touches last week?) And I don't think we can afford cox in the wet. But Blair might come in for him? Hmmmm... No no no no. I hope not!

Adelaide by 32 points is what my head says.

Heart says Collingwood by 10 goals.

It's hammer time.

Pitty we're the nail :(

These are the games when Mick would pull something out of his ass, love him or hate him he deserves massive credit as a coach for that.

We'll fight but we'll lose by 6 goals.

I'm done with pretending to be balanced and cautious and sensible...

I think we are starting to click. Sidey is playing like a superstar this year - and I never use that word! The players love having Murray in the team. Aish and Schaz are starting to look like confident mature footballers. Grundy is smashing all and sundry. And JDG is bursting to play.

I think we'll win this.

Agreed.

Really enjoying seeing Aish and Shaz improving and looking more confident week by week. Hoping they continue to stake their claims on a consistent best 22 spot.

Optimism is a little unwarranted and probably coming off the back of an overrated win against a winless blues.

  • Carlton made our transition of the footy look good with their lack of team defensive pressure - we know Ade won't allow us to transition the footy that well
  • We allowed them red time goals in that last quarter - lacks killer instinct.
  • We kicked 16.4 and were outnumbered in scoring shots, can't remember the last time we were this accurate. - it's not like Ade are having trouble hitting the scoreboard and we'll need a minimum but very accurate 30+ scoring shots to have any hope.
The only possible saving grace is if it is wet it becomes a grunt game and our skills in the phone box will have to be at an optimum. If we can do that in the wet for me it's a don't know the winner.

If it's dry - and I'll be lenient - Ade by 40+
