Good question, I am in the same boat and are a gold Member. Have paid $250 overall (on monthly payment) towards the annual membership. Is my $250 burnt and need to pay another $170 to go absentee?
The other option is to Pause, however it doesn't mention whether I keep gold status (however the absentee option does)?
A bit more clarity in the options would be nice!
Update to my own question.. buried in the terms and conditions.. they take the $170 out of what you have already paid and you can get any additional $$ that you have paid as a refund or credit for 2021. And the $170 is retained by your nominated club. option 2 more me..

By having the carrot of ‘access to 2020 games if crowds are allowed’ it allows them to only offer a 30% discount for next year - even though they know it’s not going to happen.

Doesn't it still say you'll have access if taking out an absentee membership as well? I haven't got the email yet but my dad sent me a screenshot of his and it seems to indicate you'll still get access to games if crowds are allowed back this year if you select the absentee option.

I just checked the fine print - so if you select the absentee option and crowds are allowed back this season's you'll have access to any games at the CLUB member rate and not the AFL Member rate.

This obviously means full price for finals tickets but what would the impact on H&A games be?

It's probably a moot point but something to consider.

If I read the site correctly, it says that there won’t be any upgrades from silver to gold this season.
It's in the FAQ:
Will there be a Gold Membership upgrade/intake this year?
At this stage, we will not be asking members to upgrade to Gold membership this year. We will revisit this later in the year should crowds be allowed to attend the 2020 Toyota AFL Finals Series.

Anybody know if you Abssentee can you do it again in the future? How many times can you do this? I had in the back of my mind you could only do this once

From the T&C it looks like multiple seasons are fine.

"An AFL Absentee Membership allows you to place your AFL Membership on hold for a season (or multiple seasons if the annual fee for AFL Absentee Membership is maintained) and to return to the same AFL Membership status when your circumstance changes. "

I will probably go for the absentee option. My wife lost her job a couple of weeks ago, and my job is looking uncertain after June given a current freeze on contract renewals at the uni I work at, so the partial refund won't go astray! Plus the absentee option is pretty fair really- I don't often use guest passes, but the 4x guest passes they are offering for 2021 is at least $150 value (maybe more, depending on the restrictions on them), so that pretty much covers the $170 absentee fee.

Although as mentioned above it is probably worth waiting to see how things pan out. I can't imagine crowds will be allowed this year, but it was certainly strategic of the AFL to send out these membership offers early while crowd access to games this year remains a something of a possibility.

Can confirm you can do it multiple times. I spent time on the absentee list while living overseas and then subsequently WA

I think the options are reasonably clear- although I wish they would be more definitive regarding the specifics of the member pack. What parts do you find confusing?
I don't know, it just seems like the packs are all over the place.

I pay monthly for my Silver. I want to keep it, I'm close to Gold.

So, Option 1 to "Maintain" you essentially pay this year in full, 30% off next years membership and get an option pack of your choosing (probably would get the Guest Passes, but it doesn't say how many).

Option 2 to "Absentee" you get four guess passes next year (...basically the option pack above?), you pay $170 for this year (have I paid more than this already? Do I have to pay ANOTHER $170)?

Just makes no sense. Do it in a ****ing table and make it simple.

Typical AFL, absolutely all over the place.

Yeah I see what you mean. Regarding the $170 absentee payment, this is mentioned in the top post on this page (by Stazza71) wherein it is not another $170, but it is taken out of what has already been paid, and if you have paid more, the difference will be refunded. It is not an extra $170.

And yes the packs are quite vague, e.g. it would be nice to know how many guest passes are included so people can make informed decisions. More information may come later it seems.

Did they mention anything about refunding the payment for the reserved seat packages or are we supposed to cop that as well?

If there are no crowds able to go to the games then you shold be able to get a full refund without any penalty.

I chose one of the options just to see if it explained more about the value packs. The next step says the value packs will be further detailed by the end of May.

Absentee seems the best option, but I would like to be clear about what the "access at club member price" means.
  • Are we still permitted in the AFL reserve? Or are we just basic club of support members ?
  • What is the club member price per match / finals ? I know my club member friend can pay $10 to enter the AFL reserve with me. So is it $10 per match for walk up ? Or the full $25/$30 per match ?
  • Do Gold absentee / on hold members have the same preference to finals tickets as members continuing to pay ? Do they get first crack at GF tickets ?
I may just continue to pay until August when details are much clearer since you get a refund anyway. Should also have more of an idea how the Hawks are travelling finals wise...

Also my partner signed up as a Silver member this year and paid the full amount upfront.... Anyone know the exact cost breakdown for a new member this year ? (Joining fee & Member fee)

I am a Silver member and wondering how I find out where I am in the gold waitlist?
Does anyone have a link to find this please, thanks

You'll have to email them - they say it's on your account on the website but I've never been able to find it.

I know my club member friend can pay $10 to enter the AFL reserve with me.

Huh? How do they do that? Don't they need a guest pass (~$50)?

I think your waitlist number was on the renewal info you got in the mail?
That’s where I used to find out how far I’d moved up

Me thinks it’ll be no more than 4 guest passes for next season.

also how will the complimentary reserve seat upgrades work?

As usual - it's the honesty & transparency of the AFL that annoys me. If they need some money - they should just ask
It is dependant on each individuals financial position at the end of the day

The absentee option for example - the game is absent - not necessarily the supporter
You are still paying for something you are not getting - you CAN'T go to the football
Sugar coat in with 'guest passes' for next year - or your club of choice receiving that amount - or just be upfront and honest

It's like when we used to be informed how many full/gold members each club had
That information is no longer supplied - allowing the AFL to allocate tickets (GF) as they see fit, with no explanation

The GAME is struggling - the AFL is struggling - the WORLD is struggling

I think I did it once years ago.
If you buy a walk up guest pass at the ticket window (normally $37) for someone who has entry rights for that game through their club membership then they get the GA entry fee ($27) subtracted which leaves them $10 to pay.
