News AFL to overhaul the draft, discuss changes to Academy and FS bid matching

100% this. Gil system was a rort for Vic teams with father/som and once the academy started cranking QLD and NSW teams.

Yes they should have Academy’s, it is one fight against the soft afl culture of wanting to play in their home state but they should have to match at a fair price. Not get 4 top 26 picks and then rort the system to have 3 first round picks.

So what if GC could only match 3 of their 4 players last year. Still a fair leg up, while the spooner gets 1 pick before 30 and watch their NGA kid go 10 picks after where their 2nd pick should’ve been.

If Brissy can only match a top 5 kid in the draft while they finish top 4* and have to throw the Academy kid back in the pool.
They already got a leg up 2 years earlier with 2 top 14 kids while contending. They could easily trade their future first which would be projected to be in the 16-20 range while the academy kid is projected to go around 12.

The shitshow has gone on too long and the majority of clubs crying are the one who are effected this year but will still get an advantage or they just wouldnt match.

It’s painfully obvious that having a draft system and having an academy system doesn’t work together. They are opposite ideas about how to develop and distribute talent.

Having academies has been hugely beneficial for the northern states and the growth of the game and league talent pool.

The way to make it fair is Every team gets academies. (With a salary cap) No catchment zones and full access to any player they develop. (With rules about how long a player has to be in the academy for to count. Say 10 years)

That’s fair.

The other solution is keeping the draft. The afl pays for every academy and no team gets any advantage over another

Yep, can’t have both and be fair. Also teams crying when Priority Picks are handed out for clubs who have minimal benefit from NGA,FS and academy but have had their picks continuously pushed back.

AFL hasn’t helped with letting the big Vic teams get a monopoly on all the marquee games. While QClash/Derbiy/Showdown/Battle of the bridge ect are tucked away on Sunday late after noon on fox only. Kids watch these from kindy age until they are drafted and want to be involved in these if they can. Why the Roos/Saints struggle to get any decent star movement in without paying ridiculous amount more salary.

So many issues and credit to the new regime for trying to implement better equalisation measures. Haven’t been great with time but like I said if teams don’t benefit from the changes they just won’t match.

If implemented this year I bet the Campo twins, the two Brissy boys, LL at Gc all end up at their clubs of choice and probably way before their clubs were suppose to pick. Just won’t have 7 picks in 2 years like GC in the first round while the spooner gets 2.

Have a feeling it’s only going to have slight change this year and bigger ones next.

Academies are such a big leg up. How many premierships have clubs won since their academies came in? 🤔🤔🤔

LOTS of them !

Detective Looking GIF by Sherlock Holmes Games

A-ha, found one. Swans won the 2012 premiership and got Heeney in 2014 ! It's all your fault !!

The teams get eight years to build an environment where the player wants to stay. They also have an amount of time to be able to organise their salary cap so they can afford market rates

If they can’t do either of those things I don’t see why they should be rewarded for a player wanting to leave

Well that just sounds like the perfect set up for the big destination clubs to benefit at the expense of smaller newer clubs.

The rich will get richer and the lesser clubs become feeder clubs.

Which is what the AFL should be equalising.

Few GFs and probably ‘unlucky’ to get MCG tenants in all of them. If they had of played in neutral venue might be a lot different.

If you are arguing they ain’t advantage…. Their is just no point

How many years have teams with academy leg ups made top 4, finals and grand finals?

You cant expect the AFL to kick the goals on grand final day for you as well. ;) ;):$

And if your team is playing finals consistantly and making grand finals why do they need exrra assistance? Can you explain that?

Especially when other clubs strugglung to rebuild get nothing other than their picks and access to players diluted. Oh and their better players poached by successful clubs making finals with AFL leg ups.

Success and failure is not restricted to who wins or loses the grand final. Sustained success is making finals most years and the Swans are up there and their rebuild took 2 seasons. How? Academies, trades and free agents.

Academies are in place to balance out other disadvantages. The AFL have made this very clear, yet AFL fans and media deliberately ignore this.

Again, if it's such an advantage why aren't the academy clubs winning premierships left right and centre? 🤔🤔

They are in 50% of GFs over the last 11 years. 4 teams out of 18, that’s a raid effort with that only look like continuing in the future…. 😗🤫

Bing! Bing! Bing!

Do you believe other clubs have advantages when it comes to trades? The answer is an emphatic yes, yet the AFL does nothing

Correct. Very difficult to get players to move West. Especially non WA born players.

However Sydney have no problems at all trading in players every year. Free agents lining up to move to Sydney. Grundy, Adams and Jones three last year.

So remind us again. Why do they need additional assistance that others dont get?

Super strong list.
Players happy to move there.
Making finals and grand finals.

Grundy picked Swans over his own home town. Buddy, Getting one of the biggest superstars in the game in Free agency.

Once again if you don’t want to have an honest convo about it, there is no point

Who is Jones?

I mean Adams and Grundy were neither best 22 at the clubs. If this is the big stars we trade in its not saying a lot.

Last time we recruited a player in the best 22 was Buddy. To do so we offered him the biggest AFL contract in history

And they have. Equalisation like majority get hit with. Missing out on NGA player in the late 20s and can’t match. Pick 18 going back to 30 ect ect
4 clubs

Sunas have never played a finals match
Giants and Lions move in and out of finals. Have spent periods at the bottom
Swans unusual but did spend 2 seasons bottom 4

Nothing suggesting academies are unfair on the total 56 seasons across the 4 clubs

Sorry Jordan James.

Grundy not best 22? He is leading your ruck and will be in AA ruck conversatuins this season.

Adams and James have been keeping Parker out of the best 22.

So ooen the other eye mate. Swans are a destinatiin club and everyone knows it. They were banned previously from trading in players for a year. What does that tell you

Nice twist using 54 seasons. You should be in politics.

Academy access was needed in the past for the Swans and Lions. Now both teams are dominating the competition. After getting priority access. Suns are on the verg and GWS also makes finals and a grand final. All four sides have super strong lists now.

So how can anyone defend the dominant teams still getting handouts with teams at the bottom get kittle to nothing?

People are entitled to unemployment benefits when unemployed. When they get back on their feet and get jobs the benefits stop. That is how the AFL should manage its assistance and benefits packages. Those who need it get something until they no longer need it.

Is that fair?

I don't believe you should ban F/S and academy picks in top first round but have no issue with the points being adjusted

Lol. What a load of BS. Very disengenuous post.

They are in the Swans best 22 arent they? At a team on top of the AFL ladder.

Grundy never a AA ruck? And best 22 at any club without Gawn as #1. Likely the AA ruck in 2024.

Adams missed the grand final after ruling himself out with a hamstring strain that didnt come up. So easily best 22 when fit and available for selection.

James last 3 years played 25 games, 22 games, then 18 games at Melbourne before being poached as a free agent. That looks like a best 22 player. This year 16 out of 18 games at the Swans. So again best 22.

Go take a seat, you dont have a leg to stand on with that silly statement.

Restrict the amount of priority access and free agency access to teams on top of the ladder making finals and grand finals recently..

For example you only get ONE crack at priority access or a free agent per season if you finish top 5. So the club must chose between one academy kid in the 1st round, or one father son or one free agent. They dont get unlimited access to all three at the expense for the rest of the competition. Finish between 8 and 6 you get "two bites at rhe priority access and free agent cherry."

Thats fair.

When you fall out of the top eight you THEN get unlimited access back. When you need it to help rebuild.

Assuming Father Sons count as academy players that teams didn’t pay fair value for as they should since teams have exclusive access to them and develop them internally.

Here’s a list of a few players that got flags via academy players.

Essendon (Dustin Fletcher)
Brisbane lions (Jonathan Brown)
Geelong cats (Mathew Scarlet, Gary Ablett jr, Hawkins)
West Coast (Ben Cousins)
Collingwood (Clokes and Shaws)
Bulldogs (Libba, Hunter)
Melbourne (Viney)
Collingwood (Moore, Daicos, Daicos)

That’s close to a 50% win rate over the past 23 years. And it should be higher considering Essendon had Jobe Watson/Joe Daniher as freebies in the mid 2000s-10s and epically shit the bed despite the leg up

If Grundy was best 22 at Melbourne wait until you hear who Sydney have lost over the last few years let alone decade
