AFL to trial goalkicking shot clock

How does the umpire keep in sync with the countdown clock?

Does he get a signal in his ear because that would just be a huge distraction from him watching what's going on.

Who thinks up this stuff? Nonsense rule ...
Other sports have it it must be cool

The rule is still broken with it still allowing for time wasting. Your team is slightly ahead with only a minute on the clock. Mark it just out side 50, tell the ump you are taking a shot. Then you get 20 odd seconds to go as far back as possible. You then just have to start a very slow walk in (Saad like). You could easily blow a minute or 2 off the clock. (Unless this counts as time off??)
100% agree. As long as you start walking in before 30 seconds, you can take as long as you want to walk in. The rule should be (and I used to think it was) that after 30 seconds it's play on, regardless of whether they've started their run-up. It's not a good look for the game when someone (usually Saad) takes 50+ seconds before having their shot, especially if it were to happen late in a grand final.

I find the AFL hard to take serious on any of there rules when they still allow a centre bounce.
How about the get the most obvious, basic and commonsense rules right first before they tackle trivial issues like countdown clocks.

They have totally lost track of the point of the bounce. It needs to return around the ground, and remove the whole 'only for ruckmen' thing too.

Now this guy here, he can multi task.

Worst idea ever. Most players just walk in and kick. You have a count down clock why wouldn't you wait til 2 seconds every shot if you are in front. Easy way to kill time. At least he other way the unpire yells out 15 then it's up to the player he doesn't wanna push the boundaries incase the umps count is quicker then his.
This will actually work in reverse

Just telling the umpire your having a shot wouldn't stop them calling play on if they could tell you weren't having a shot. In fact, they usually are quite harsh on people outside 50 wasting time lining up...
There are a lot of players who can kick that far so at the end of it why wouldnt they still have a shot? Still managing to waste a lot of time

The ball needs to be thrown up. That ensures both rucks have a fair chance. At present - they don't.
They change everything else about the game, and the only thing they should change - they keep the same.

Basketball Jones sucks...not the song...get a round ball and hoops at each end if you really want it to be basketball...umpire the game properly and it's not a problem...the AFL is a joke.

Yeah, I can see some muppet pressing the button 5 seconds early, leading to mass pandemonium when the kicker appears to get to 0 on the clock and no play on call. Or worse, the umpire calls play on even though it's not 30 seconds.

You only have to look at some of the pillocks that they get as the TV umpire. Some of them are simply morons.

Has anyone ever been able to answer the question "who are the people who conduct the video reviews after goals?" For one they all sound pike the same guy and two they are incredible morons.

They will **** this up.

People will be ****ing livid when the umpire's count doesn't match the screen to the millisecond.

This is completely unnecessary, just police it.

This has to be one of the least offensive additions (and not even an addition, really) to the game in recent times and people are hysterical over it.

I can't believe there's so much opposition to this. The rule says you have 30 seconds to take a set shot. All this is doing is making sure it's followed.

And lol at the 'nooo Americanisation' complaints. The Yanks didn't invent the concept of counting.
You have 30 secs to start your run in. You can take as long as you want to do that
