What is Port's list of mid?

I guess I don't really know. The pool to draw from is at least:

Boak, Wines, Drew, Houston, SPP? (been used forward a bit), Butters? (injury interrupted just as he made that transition), Dursma?(maybe more wing) and Rozee? (been hampered by injury).

I don't know anything about Dylan Williams and Jackson Mead, Taj Schofield, Trent Burgoyne and Trent McEntee. A few of these guys appear to be midfielders.

That something like 10 mids on Port's list (11 if you include Rockliff) vs the 7 on our list if you stretch it to include Perkins (for what he could do in the future) and Clarke (who hasn't played midfield at AFL level since 2019).
Based on your interpretation of a mid Boak, Drew and Wines

This year we were missing Shiel, Caldwell and McGrath for the best part of half a season and he STILL wasnt picked until he came into the side as a half forward.
Stringer plays about 2minutes of midfield a quarter. Barely enough to keep him out.

In fairness, he's been injured all year and only came back into the side the game after Shiel came back. If he was fit all year he may have had that midfield time, but by the time he was ready the only spot was in the half forward rotations. He does seem to be rotating up from half forward when Stringer transitions forward from the clearance as well, so he's playing a midfield role in that sense.

No.
Had no midfield time last year either.
I know I keep saying it but he is not in the coaches midfield plan.

Dylan Clarke isnt playing midfield because he has two obvious and critical flaws to his game.

1. He is still - despite years of intervention - a horrendous kick under pressure. He looks fine at half forward or when he has a mark/free kick, but the game vs Southport showed that when the heat is on his disposal is shot to bits.
2. He is slow. Decent enough tank, but no burst whatsoever.

The reality is there are seldom slow, poor disposal midfielders running around in good teams.
We have had terrible midfeld depth every year since we drafted him until this year and he still hasnt got a regular game outside of being a tagger or half forward.

Look I'm the last to defend Clarke as any world beater. He's not

Just think in regards to midfielders on the list he is one if we were to have enough injuries and he was ready to play.

As you said his last VFL game he played as a midfielder

He didn't play VFL till round 16 of the AFL roster coming off a delayed prep

Shiel returned in round 19 after 2 wins he was never playing midfield this year.

He's plan like H for the mids but he's still an option worse case scenario

Top 4 midfields
Melb: Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes, Jordan, Langdo
Geel: Dangerfield, Guthrie, Duncan, Selwood, Parfitt, Menegola, Higgins
Port: Wines, Boak, Drew, Duursma, Butters, Houston, Amon
WB: Bontempelli, Macrae, Hunter, Liberatore, Dunkley, Treloar, Smith
-‐---------------
Ess: Merrett, Parish, Shiel, Mcgrath, Caldwell, Langford, Stringer (?)

Looking at that, why on earth would we trade Shiel, let alone halfway through a deal, pay some of his salaray and all for the return of likely a teen pick when we are under zero cap pressure

He is one of the few gun clearance mids we have, and we need more, not less to this point.

I dont understand the fascination in trading him. You draft a guy in the hope he is as good as Shiel, so why trade him when we have plenty of cap room to accommodate him and still require his skills.

Sometimes i wonder if our supporters are so starved for success that the idea and value of draft picks and winning trade period has become bigger than it should be
Totally agree with all u said.. who even in there right mind would trade a star like Shiel... yes improve your kicking and settle when u pass the ball of but other than that he’s is an absolute ball Magnet and a great clearance mid

Would it be worthwhile trying to wrangle Johannisen out of the doggies for a half back flanker role? Seems like such a waste in this shitty forward pocket role he's got right now.

Or did him and Packo have some kind of beef back in the day?

They're the main ones who dislike one another. Plus if we're going for a small defender/half back I'd rather an 18/19 year old at the draft.

Yeh he's worth a look. Mentioned him a while ago. Agree he's a back flanker.

Having said that he'd be no guarantee in our back 7 and at the moment he's getting a regular game at the dogs who are close to a flag even with a recent drop off. You'd think over his last 2-3 years he would have the right to think he could get another one at the kennel

Jack Billings a free agent?

Whos the big fish we are chasing this off season?

We have chased biggish targets for the last few years. And this year considering where we are at, you'd assume this would be the most likely off season we'd be targeting someone.

Stats point to the fact we've leaked too many points against this year. So probably a key defender or good defensive half midfielder.
McGrath being our only good one on the list.

I say we wait for King next year.

I say we wait for King next year.
King is a key forward. We already have Wright, Jones, and Stringer. Plus Baldwin if he's as good as they say he will be.
On paper scoring is not our problem. Its scores against is the issue.
I think the guy who's a better Stewart. Or another McGrath type who plays defensive half only and pushes back to help out.

The guy who takes Stewart's place is already on our list (Zach Reid). Just need to wait till he's ready.

Ok great. So we just need another defensive half midfielder. We only have McGrath as the pure def/mid. Heppell and Hind are backs that push up.
Other than those 3 all our mids are natural playing mid/forwards.

I know its not romantic wanting a defender type trade target, but conceding 100 points a game is not going to win us a premiership.

Which 'big fish' is going to be a defensive half forward?

Stringer is not a KPF. That forward line you mentioned also had Hooker in it for most of the year. There's always room for King.

Some noise from gws fans that Tim Tarranto may be the midfielder most likely to leave. What do you guys think about him in our side?

Why would Taranto leave a side that looks like pushing up the ladder again and being part of an a grade on-ball brigade?
It might well be $$$

GWS have Whitfield, Greene, Haynes, Kelly and Coniglio on monster long term contracts.
They also have Hopper (who may well win their BnF), Tom Green, Ash and a bunch of other mids who need to be re signed this year or next.

Cant pay everyone, and he may well be odd man out. An absolute gun though and I can see teams paying through the nose for him.
Ironically Carlton would be a good fit but there is no chance they can afford him and Cerra, who they have already seem to have committed to.
