Would we offer a 2022 first round pick for josh Dunkley or has that ship sailed?
I still like the idea of another big mid who has a defensive element to his game.
though it would tempting to have a real crack at Ben king next year.

we'd have been all over Taranto last year.
not sure we're suiting up for big moves this year

what we're missing can be found in similar deals like Hind & Wright.
quite bullish a pre-season into Durham is going to add a major cog. his effort and gut running is excellent. get him strong enough to stick the tackles or diisrupt the ball and he's gonna fit in nicely.
I am pumped for Baldwin too.

Keep the expensive powder dry for these Gold Coast guns who are all uncontracted end of 2022

Outside of that some cheaper style guys that fill depth positions or minor roles in the side

Ronke, Schulz, Johannisen, J.Clark, Narkle ect

I think we try and draft the defensive mid this year.
Someone like Dunkley would eat into next years picks, and ruin a chance of getting King.

I Agree with you and would like both (King and defensive mid), but that is the only way I can think to make it happen.

Darcy will probably be bid on at pick 2 by Collingwood lol GWS so like last year no point trading in first rounders for the dogs.

Unless they have live trading during the draft?

I think that ship has sailed, but Dunkley has spent lots more time on the bench than usual recently, so may not be happy. Hopefully Bevo's contemplating giving him ruck time as well.

Surely they are looking to bolster other areas like defence.

Given they also acquired Treloar last year; you'd have to think they're resigned to the fact that they will eventually lose a midfielder, which seems likely to be Dunkley.

I hope it's not to us though. I don't think we need to land a big, expensive fish. They need support for English as well and I think they realise Stef Martin is not a good solution. At a guess, if Dunks is still coming to us, they might ask for one of Draper or Bryan. I'd rather keep both and not pursue Dunkley at all.

Essendon has conceded the MOST points of any of the finals teams. (And a couple outside the 8.)

Let that dictate who we need in the off-season.

Im quite confident we have the key defender stocks. With Hurley and Reid giving us extra depth there.
So where does that leave us short? Another half back or defensive midfielder. Dunkley is a natural Mid/forward type.

Luckily we don't need to spend much on the type of player we need. Because generally they are acquired for less on the open market.

Who is gettable??

Someone like Hopper would work.
Hopper would cost alot. He's GWS best mid

He's also less defensive than Dunkley

But we don't need midfield quality. Depth? Maybe

Yeah it's not as simple as "we concede a lot of points, so we should recruit defenders".

It's all about team-style these days, and at our worst parts of this season, our transition defense and stopping teams moving the ball end-to-end was pretty awful.

Think McGrath's role could be interesting next year - still playing midfield, but more of a defensive mindset in terms of where he structures and positions himself.

Because he signed a massive deal a couple of year back, coming off a norm smith etc. clubs were offering him well over 600 and he was considered 1 of the best half backs in the comp. Minimum he would be on would be 500 but most likely more.

I guess it depends how front/back loaded it was ect

No one really knows what he's getting paid in 2022 except him, his manager and the football club

Tale of two halves of the season. First 12 rounds we conceded over 80 points in 8 games. Second half only 3.

First 12 games we played 4 top 8 teams, the last ten we played 5

You want to see a Hewett in there at the expense of a Parish, Zerrett or Shiel?
No at the expense of a Clarke. Im not talking about a tagger either. A defensive HALF midfielder. Like Adam Simpson was.
They spend some time in the middle ballups, but typically set up at the oppositions half forward and only contest in the back half stoppages.

We have only one on our list. McGrath. And that role doesn't come natural to him imo. We need a better one.
