Wait. Harry?
Oh no Petracca. Harry McKay was floated as an option in the trade with Melbourne but McKay's manager stated he isn't going anywhere.

So both Carlton and Collingwood are probably out of it.

Richmond is massive 🤷‍♂️
They're rebuilding so they won't chase Petracca. He's probably not interested in the wooden spooner either.

Have they not also lost a lot of senior leaders though? I don't reckon Lynch is that guy.

Devils advocate post for making a move for CP.

If we had Petracca on our list this year instead of Parish&2MP would we have finished top 4/6?

The league is as close as it's ever been, does Trac get us an extra 3 wins this season? Do we lose to a fluke Rachele goal or a Mac Andrew goal after the Siren with Trac?

Devil's advocate to the devils advocate would be we win the Adelaide game and the Gold Coast game without Petracca provided we trained late game situations with getting the goalkeeper in the right position and correct positioning of multiple loose defenders.

Petracca is an absolute monster but he's not winning any prizes for defensive running and making the correct decision with when to push up and when to hang back.

I don't think so, no.

Petracca is great, but fixes almost none of our problems. Our midfield is pretty good - sure, adding star talent is always going to help it, but even with Petracca:

  • He'd still be kicking it forward to a forward line that has no consistent key forward target that can take a mark.
  • The ball would then be in our forward line where we have zero creative small forwards who could take advantage of an opportunity.
  • The ball would then transition across the ground with minimal pressure.
  • And the ball would enter our defense, where we can't really defend man-on-man, but even if we do, our awful skills coming out of defense will make sure we give the opposition another easy chance.

Petracca is great. He just doesn't address our needs, which are plentiful.

Both fair and reasonable posts, I'd then argue we need to go the opposite way to bringing in elite senior talent, by trading some of our senior talent this period and bring in more kids?

The question shouldn't be 'would we have made finals with Petracca' it should be 'if we trade him in, can this squad win a GF with him'.

I'm not convinced the answer there is yes given that if you got the best version of Petracca it still doesn't fix our lack of small forwards and front-half pressure, that we still need more good users on the outside for when Merrett is inevitably tagged or we're getting stick coming out of defence, and we still lack contested marking power.

We'd be praying that Petracca is such an upgrade over whatever other midfielder we'd have in there that it covers up a number of cracks, which at his best he might do, but you'd be sacrificing a couple of drafts on the basis of Petracca being that good, that he'll return at that level, and that he'll stay on the park.

It's not a bargain basement buy like Hodge was, or where we threw some salary cap that we have oodles of at McKay.

How deep do we think we'll cut our list?

Imagine at minimum Weideman is gone as well. Goldy might retire? I'd like to see Kelly delisted but doubt it happens. Jayden Davey verdict?

Petracca is the shiny new toy that everyone is seduced by this year. We don't need him. The price will be incredibly steep.

If we trade him in we'll be mortgaging our future and come July all of you will be bitching about the price we paid to get him.
Agree. If it was 2020 Petracca it is a different story but those getting excited are after a sugar hit.
We need players like Trac but we need the under 24 versions.

I’m worried Weid survives unless we replace him with an older key position player.

And he can butcher the footy at times.

Would've kept Baldwin over him 10 times out of 10 and would be a bit disappointed if we kept the most obvious delisting candidate we have... But I too am worried.

The problem we have is he should not survive but the KPD stocks have injury issues and what is out there to replace him as a back up ? I would prefer he did not stay around and we just try Jones back but we may need a spare body and I would rather keep the him for 1 year if there are only ordinary options to replace him.

Baldwin can not get on the park. Better player. Yes. However you can not get a kick sitting in the stands.

It's fair enough and I understand the reasoning behind giving him the flick. I just feel there has to be a better option than Weideman somewhere.

5 out already (assuming Hunter is gone).

If Goldy goes I assume they'll want some kind of 3rd ruckman on the list, clubs often like to carry three.

Baldwin going means our KPD list is; McKay, Laverde, Reid, Hayes with Laverde being undersized and looking very beaten up, Reid made of tissue paper, and Hayes untried at AFL level.

Weideman as a FWD / DEF depth player could get a 1 year deal.

We also have Guelfi, Setterfield, Jayden Davey, Kelly, and Stringer (though sounds like he's got a trigger clause for another year anyway) all OCC currently.

Jones is / was OOC but not sure whether he's got a new contract / hit a trigger clause.

So could easily see 5 - 7 list changes which is quite substantial in one off-season.

If it cost 2 firsts + then yes.

You have to consider Petracca is a top 5 player in the game and a true match winner. Something Shiel was never going to be. Situations are different.
It is short sighted. Different story if we where playing finals and needed a bloke to consolidate top 4 . It is a sugar hit. Great player but he will be 29 in Jan next year and you would want to be in the top 4 window in the next few years if you are going to give up what he will cost.

Maybe there is not that I can think of who it is now. Could be Jones or Cox. He is one player that really does not concern me as far as getting a year as a back up if it comes to that. We can not make all the moves in one off season.

I'd like to see us keep Guelfi/Setterfield, even just for depth more than anything. Stringer has a contract in some form if he wants it I'd imagine. Jones will get a new contract.

The rest I'm indifferent.
