You're forgetting about the Carlton portion of the trade. They've sacrificed two firsts and two seconds for pick 3 and Brisbane's F2.
Oh I definitely think Carlton gave too much for pick 3 as I find it hard to imagine that they're one 18y/o away from a premiership, but I think Port takes the cake simply because they're losing a player like Houston to a contender + giving away F1 when there's a big possibility they fall down the ladder.

If things continue on from the end of last year Wright will be in the VFL with Draper as Ruck/Key forward. Caddy and Langford as no2 and 3 with Jones floating in off the wing and Bryan as main ruck.

Then it’s Goldy, Wright and Viggo as your VFL talls. Could fit a 3rd tall in the VFL. 190cm half forward huge aerobic capacity. That’s likely 1 player Rosa is targeting.

Before he mentioned he planned on taking 4 picks in the draft. My bet Kako + 3 midsize aerobic specialists. 1 HB/3rd tall 1 HF/3rd tall one big bodied mid
I personally don’t see Draper or Jones as genuine key talls. First starters, neither are reliable kicks for goal and neither can take contested marks. Wright had a stinker of a year but he’s still a better forward option than those 2.

He’s a very good athlete but I simply don’t rate Jones as an AFL level footballer.

Maybe the addition of a small vs Stringer helps someone like 2MP

Because he is no good once the ball gets to ground and hes also slow as a wet wag and cant apply pressure

Still think Harrys Jones 4 weeks without 2MP were excellent

I think they all have their flaws for sure. There’s a reason the team missed the 8.

I like Wright and think he’s too good to be in the VFL, but he really is a Ruck/CHF hybrid who excels on a lead which doesn’t pair well with Caddy who’s more a true CHF at this stage of his career.

With Draper I think that while he’s not that good of a mark or set shot he’s pretty good at physically holding space/bringing the ball to ground (something Wright really struggles with) and he’s normally good for 1-2 WTF goals a game when he spends enough time forward. Really helps Caddy/Langford too by taking the tallest opposing defender giving them easier matchups.

As a 4th/5th option after Langford/Caddy/Gresham/Kako getting say 30 goals a year and decent backup ruck work is a pretty good outcome all things considered. If you’re not asking him to be a star he can definitely be productive.

As for Jones gonna agree to disagree. He clearly didn’t know how to play wing last year but showed some real flashes. Think he’s going to be the 21st guy picked for a long time.

I remembered that West Coast did something similar in 2022. They traded pick 2 to North (and Rioli to Port) for pick 8, 12, Port's 2023 2nd and 3rd in that JHF mega deal.

North selected Harry Sheezel with pick 2. West Coast selected Reuben Ginbey, Elijah Hewett, Clay Hall and Harvey Johnstone.

Harry Sheezel looks to be worth more in the long run. He's definitely the better player now, but I guess it hinges on how well Hewett can come back from injury. The other two are speculative at best.

To do it once is ok, but twice in 3 years as a bottom side?

Imagine they had Sheezel, Reid and Lalor?

It's the Essington effect imo. My first memory of him was torching his Hawthorn opponent for speed turning him inside out then spearing a brilliant pass to Caldwell straight in front. That was a lot of talent in one piece of play but we have had this ability to destroy youthful exuberance and flair (or at the very least struggle to cultivate it) when trying to get guys to fit into whatever our system is.
