Here’s a good illustration of what I was talking about.

People will argue at the margins about this bloke and that bloke but the overall trend is clear - we don’t have a single player considered in the top 40 players under 22yo in the game

Us and Richmond are the only ones. That is where our list is at.

This list is peaking now. This is as good as it gets.

Our last 4-5 years of top end drafting has been horrific and it will come home to roost. People don’t seem to have their heads around the fact that Cox, Perkins, Reid, Hobbs, Tsatas are not coming through. We might get lucky with one or maybe even of them… but largely they are busts (in relation to their draft position) who will not be the elite players we need to push us forward.

It can turn quickly but we need to be decisive. We need high picks now and we need to trade for them. Caddy looks the goods and we need to add to him.

It’s hard but the likes of Stringer, Redman, perhaps Ridley need to be on the table now to get us the returns we need.

This is one of those ones that people are really only going to get or understand once it's happened.

This list isn't talented enough to seriously challenge.

We both know we aren't going to do what needs to be done, it just won't happen, we keep handing out the contracts we have proves that.

Just have to sit and wait for the penny to drop.

Brilliant idea. Let's blow the list up for draft picks so we can draft more duds. Sure, by your logic we've messed up every pick except for Caddy. But hey, give us a few more darts and we'll surely nail them this time.

Yes, “blow the list up” by trading a couple of players. Right.

Obviously we’re not trading the core of Merrett, McGrath, Langford, Durham, Martin, Caldwell, McKay and Jones.

But we have a huge hole in our list now after a few years of shocking drafting. We need to try to fix it or we’ll be in a heap of pain.

Can’t believe people can’t see it. You can’t go 3-4 years of shit picks at the top end. It ruins you.

People overate talent on their team.

Throw in, how much football do people actually watch? Do they see the type of talent that some teams wheel out? The pressure, the running power?
I think that plays a role.

Eh, this is more doomposting rather than cause for serious concern.

Change the 22 to 23 and we'd have Durham and Nic Martin in there, and they'd probably be close to the top of that group. Miles ahead of some.

No doubt Caddy would be in there (in due time) given more exposure to AFL level. I'd argue the same for Hobbs too. We do need to be better at playing young talent though, no question.

Jack lukosius is apparently gettable. Athletic flanker with very nice skills. Exactly what we need. Wonder what it would cost or whether he would come to vic being originally from sa. Apparently also wants to play forward, he would suit us much better in defence or through the wings.

you know what's a worry?

The Isaac Cumming & Harry Perryman suggestions. Would presume if we are to gain both, would likely be a draft pick (first) or an insurmountable amount of salary cap. They are not list changers but more role players.

Ive seen this story before and apparently its a different author now

ive seen this story before albeit different author. Paying overs for guys who are (a) not list changers and (b) not worth the contracts they are written on.

Jack Lukosius for our first round pick. Get it done.

Could be a huge piece of our puzzle moving forward.
How do we get it done?
Parish and a pick for Jack?

Only wants to play forward is what I’ve heard alot.

I’d be all over him if he wanted to come to Melbourne

Both UFA so would only cost us salary

the point was how much "topping up" does one need to do before reality hits we're not close.. If we were playing in finals, winning them and needed that punch, sure. We haven't made finals let alone won and we are talking about topping up on topping up what we have topped up with. Doesn't make sense. Salary or not. The guys we have brought in are not game changers. They are not true stars so mere role players

Wants happening with Ward from Hawthorn? Terrific runner, high draft pick. In and out the the side. Haven’t watched him play much but would like another run all day type.

jeepers, I wouldn’t be giving too much up for Lukosius.
You wouldn’t go near him with a first. How much money is he on? GC might be happy to get rid of his contract. We just need to play every game in Darwin and we are getting a star

The thing is depth is what allows you to try and trade for/bring in game changers.

Depth means you can trade that starter for a FRP because you have someone ready to replace what they do

Depth means you can trade multiple firsts for a star and not affect your team balance.

If it goes bad you can always trade the free agent. Then you just turned cap space into a 2nd round pick which is pretty good

Same problem for us with Tsatas and Hobbs. He is a midfielder but has people in front of him so they are playing him on the wing and on the flanks and he struggles to impact.
